Blood thinners

Hi all! Just got done with my pre-op appointment! Starting two week liquid diet tomorrow, surgery on the 2nd! I was sorta shocked to hear I would not go home after surgery with any blood thinning medication. I keep hearing people having to even give themselves shots for two weeks after. One of my main worries was and is blood clots. I did share my concern, she just said I'd get some in the hospital but not after. Anyone else not have anything for home?

No blood thinners, just told to walk at least every hour to prevent clots.

Usually with the sleeve you are up and walking the same day of surgery so you really don't need them. They use the inflating boots to make sure your blood stays moving during the surgery. As long as you are up and walking there is no need for blood thinners. Many people are on them for medical reasons and they have to do shots before and after while changing from a long term oral medication to a short acting shot.

I was sent home with the shots 2x a day for a week.  It seems to be protocol for my program.

Thanks for the replies. Just been a worry of mine. I will just get my butt up and moving as much as possible.

I was given a number of heparin shots (maybe 4 or 5?) while in the hospital for 3 days. Dr said if I was traveling for a while or if there was an issue with being able to get up and walk around he would prescribe more but I was fine

I was in the hospital 2 night and had heparin daily while there. Did not have to do shots at home BUT was instructed to walk for 5-10 mins every 1-2 hours for the first couple of weeks to prevent clots. Plus, do the pressing down/easing up gas pedal motion with my feet while in bed to keep blood flowing. It worked well for me.  Take care.

Thanks for the reply! I forgot about the gas pedal motions. I will make sure and do those!

Thanks for posting Gwen, I had read that you had gotten one in your lung. I'm so glad you are better now. I know I would feel a ton better if they sent me home with something. Hope that the rest of your journey is a great one!
