Anyone with chronic pain..

I have a ton of health problems which makes me not feel like getting out of bed most days. I'm 34, but I've had these problems most of my life. I won't go into detail, but I was in a bad car wreck at the age of 16 and I keep a stiff neck and horrible migraine almost 24/7. I take muscle relaxers when I absolutely can't stand it and they cut the pain to about 50 percent of the norm, but that's all I ever take.

Anyway, for some strange reason a few days ago, I didn't have a headache or stiff neck for basically one day in the past 18 years. It was like a miracle and I felt like doing things. I cleaned house, worked extra and walked 3 miles. I got to thinking maybe that's how normal 34 year olds feel and it got me really depressed and jealous.

So my question is..I'm going to finally do what I've always dreaded and go ask my doctor for some kind of pain relief whether it be daily pills or shots or whatever she is willing to give. I just wondered if someone can give me some insight into what I might be looking for. I definitely need something that won't make me sleepy or gain weight..and I don't want to be addicted to anything either. Any ideas?

I am sorry you have been suffering like for so many years. Glad your experience being pain free for that one day is leading you to seek out pain relief.

There are so many pain relief options out there these days that I wouldn't consider making a suggestion not knowing the actual cause of your pain. Perhaps your PCP would consider sending you to a pain management specialist. There are many options beyond  pills, nerve blocks, ablations and even the use of botox which has helped a friend of mine with her relentless migraines. It depends greatly on the cause of the pain (nerve, muscle etc) what might work for you.

Good luck in seeking and finding help for your pain. Do update us.

I second the pain management specialist. They have more options for treating your pain than your PCP does. Good luck!

Have you had any recent MRIs? The cause of the pain will dictate what options are available. I live with chronic low back pain even after 2 surgeries, a mini fusion and tons of pain meds. I've had epidurals and steroid injections, oral steroids, physical therapy, nerve/muscle stimulators, pills and more pills, and surgery. I get occasional epidurals and steroid injections. If they are an option, I think they are worth a try. I always need multiple reps to get get any success but it's such an individual thing.

I've done a lot of therapy on living with chronic pain. It messed me up so bad mentally that I was in and out of mental hospitals as I was extremely suicidal. I don't know what changed or when exactly, but I woke up one day extremely grateful to be alive, have whatever experiences I've had and just grateful to not have something worse to deal with. It's since changed my life, my outlook on life, and I've gotten more joy. If you ever want to chat, feel free to send me a PM.

I third, fourth and fifth the Pain Management Specialist!!!! You do need current MRI/CT Scans and/or lab tests. If it's been a long time since you had any scans or tests then you really need to see what is going on in there! You might also need a Neurologist now too.

Also have you tried any Physical Therapy lately? I assume you tried Chiropractor care already? Done any therapies for it in the last few years???

Many of us are on pain management here.  {{{{{hugs and good luck}}}}}
