I'm to the point where I new glasses, but have my surgery next Friday.  Has anyone experienced a permanent change in vision after VGS?

My eyesight didn't change, and I haven't heard of anyone else who has commented on this.  I don't think the surgery will affect this.

Best of luck with your surgery.

I told my eye doctor I was having surgery. He told me my sight might change. Something to do with the vegus nerve, if I remember correctly  (but don't quote me on that). :)

I don't think this exactly applies - but I know eyesight can be affected during pregnancy due partly to changes in fluid retention and metabolism.  Apparently it affects the thickness and curvature of the cornea. Maybe the reverse happens in some cases when you lose weight, stop retaining water and experience changes in your metabolism.  I guess it depends on what is causing your vision issues to start with.  Good luck with your surgery!

I found that I needed new glasses at about 6 months post-op, I'd changed by about 0.5. Granted, my eyes get worse by 0.25 - 0.5 every year, so it could just be my eyes' usual crappiness!

The only research I've found on the subject suggests a connection between massive weight loss and vitamin A deficiency having an impact on vision. I've also read that excess weight can put extra pressure on the blood vessels in your eyes, which can cause vision trouble, but no studies to back it up.

If you're worried about needing new glasses, what about getting some cheap ones now? I order all of mine from Zenni.com, and I usually pay about $20 per pair. (That's why I have half a dozen different frames!) That way if your vision changes post-op, you'll just need to pay for a new eye exam and some cheap glasses, rather than dropping $200+ at the optometrist!

When I get those $400.00 glasses at Lenscrafters, they adjust the frame.  When you order from Zenni, how does that work out?  Do you get your lenses from the eye doctor and put them in frames yourself?

You input your prescription on the website and send you a complete pair of glasses. Sometimes I need the ear pieces adjusted, and they do it at the optometrist's office for free if I ask nicely, even though I didn't buy them there.

Thanks for the information. I think I'll give the website a try for six months.

I recommend you go on Zenni and pretend to order a pair of glasses prior to your optometrist appointment--there are some funky measurements Zenni asks for that you may need to have your eye doctor write down for you. My optometrist included them on my prescription and I ordered two pairs of complete glasses (lenses and frames) for $50. They took about three weeks to get here, since t hey come from China, but they fit fantastically and work just as well as something I could get here in the states. Three years later and I'm on pair 2--the first pair lasted 2 years or so, but the frames were plastic so I really can't complain.
