I'm 3 1/2 weeks out and started having burning in my chest last night and it has gotten worse today. Im on a PPI for acid reflux. I'm still on the full liquid phase of the post op diet. I was told by surgeon just to take Tums or Maalox. My question is will this get better in time or is this  the start of a nightmare?

it may or may not get better. Reflux can be a side effect of the sleeve.

If it persists, call your Dr's office for a different prescription. I went through two before I found the one that works for me. I think it's called pantoprazole. Also try more water if you can and eating/drinking very slowly. Best of luck

Hey there

Sorry to hear your reflux is so bad. I can totally relate and it got to the point where I would cry terrified that I had opted into a life of feeling so bad. I'm 2 months out (today hurrah) and for me it seems to finally be coming right thru the use of a PPI, regular probiotics and home made kefir water. I can't say 100% that yours will too but there is hope!

Someone posted an interesting set of questions a while back including the first around heartburn/gerd. I posted the link below as there were some good responses and I'm hoping these might help you too.

Good luck and hang in there, once you move to solids I think it will get easier.

How are you doing now? I am almost 5 weeks post op and some days the acid creates a dry cough. I am literally freaking out that it will progressively get worse.

Hi, sorry to here you are having problems too. My Doctor put me on Carafate, it seems to be helping. It coats the lining of your esophagus and stomach and helps protect it from the erosion caused from acid and will also protect against ulcers. I'm also taking Omeprozole 40mg once daily. If your not taking a PPI for acid reflux you need to have your Doctor start you on one also. I was told that all newbies are on acid reducers for a few months to start and then they wean you off. My stomach still hurts most days after each meal. I had an UGI done and it was normal. I'm hoping with time it will get better. Hope you get to feeling better soon! Tums might help some they did me.

Some of us needed to try different PPIs until we found one that worked. Drinking kombucha really helps me as well. If you are not a kombucha drinker, start with only a few ounces a day until you adjust. Maybe 4 or so, slowly.
