Hi all..after 2 unsuccessful bands, I had the sleeve surgery on 3/31. I feel really good and even though because of major scar tissue, my 4 hour surgery was a success. I feel really good and almost 1 week into my clear liquid only diet. I have 1 more week to go. Is it normal doing 2 weeks of clear liquids to feel so hungry? I thought I would not feel this way..The constant hunger is making this phase difficult. Thank you for any advice.

Head hunger can really mess with people as can acid.

Are you taking a PPI for the acid?

I know you say you are on clear liquids, but are you drinking enough?

It does get better just hang in there and follow your doctor's plan. You can do this.

With so many nerves cut, you aren't feeling actual hunger. If it's not just head hunger, and you actually "feel" something in your stomach, it's definitely acid. It will gurgle and make you think it's your stomach growling from hunger, but that's not it. As Ladygodiva said, if you're not taking a PPI for acid, you need one.

My plan has me on Prilosec OTC every day for the first 6 months to keep acid at bay. I also found that whey protein drinks caused me lots of gas and stomach gurgling, making me think hunger.

I did 3 weeks total of clear liquids and protein shakes, I feel your pain. Hang in there, it's mind over matter the first few weeks!

I had a difficult time with liquid stage too. I hated the broth. Talked to my nutritionist and she told me to purchase my favorite soup, which is Progresso Chicken noodle. I just strained everything out and drank the broth and it was wonderful and tasty! I lived on sugar free popsicles, apple juice diluted 50/50 with water and sugar free jello. Hang-in-there. This is the hardest part, but you'll be eating food before you know it. You need to allow your new stomach to heal first.

Most often hunger at this point is due to acid or hydration. Are you taking a PPI such as Prilosec or Nexium? If you're not, talk to your surgeon. How much liquid are you getting in every day?

Most people don't feel restriction post-op until they start solid foods. Right now your nerves in your stomach have been severed and, until your stomach heals, it's a lying liar that lies. Do NOT trust anything it's telling you. Stick to your diet, measure portions once you're finished with the liquid diets, and don't ever eat until you feel full.
