Day 4 on clear and stomach growling?

Hi folks, I was sleeved 7/27 (revision from band). I'm on day 4 of clear liquids and everything has been fine up until last night when I felt my stomach having those stomach pain feelings. I'm drinking but have not felt the full sensation at all. Of course, I'm like WTF... Please explain? Is this common? Thanks

Hey my3angels3173

Welcome to the losers bench

You wont feel full as your nerves in your stomach have been cut. This is why when you start eating mushy then solid foods they ask you to measure carefully as your body cant tell you well when your stomach is overful. How much fluid are you getting in over the course of a day? When you say pain - is it pressure at the top of your stomach or pain? My stomach gurgles lots when Im drinking fluid - mostly a hot cup of tea or coffee or sometimes when I eat.

If its pain, I would certainly be contacting your surgeon and seeking advice.

It took me days of continual sipping to get my fluids in and build up to what my surgeons requirement is. Im 5 weeks out and I still dont make it some days.

Take care

Shirley

Hi Shirley.

It's not real "pain".. no just hunger pang. That feeling you get when your stomach is empty!! I've been sipping protein juice all day, but no****er. The not feeling full is temporary, correct?

Congrats on your revision!

At this point, hunger/pain feelings are most often from acid or dehydration. Are you taking a PPI such as Prilosec or Nexium? If not, do that. Or request a stronger one from your surgeon. How much liquid are you getting in each day? Aim for a minimum of 64 ounces. If you're already getting in 64 ounces, work toward 96.

It is totally normal to not feel any restriction while on liquids. (It's also normal to feel restriction with liquids, there's a wide range for normal here.) Chances are, restriction will kick in once you've a) healed and b) started on solid food. I've also gathered, from many posts on OH over the years, that the sense of restriction with VSG, once it does kick in, is different from the restriction feeling you might be used to from the lap band. So be prepared for that.

Thanks Gwen. I am on a PPI. I'm not getting in 64 oz closer to 50. Working on that. Will I eventually have the "full" signal?

I'm 3+ years post-op and I rarely get a full feeling. I measure everything I eat and don't try to ever eat until full.

What if you don't measure? Let's say at a party.. do you get full? Do you get the signal to stop? I need restriction! Getting nervous

Full = overate. It's not something I aim for. If I'm in a situation where I can't measure, I've gotten decent enough at eyeballing what an appropriate portion is.

I felt my restriction once I was on mushy food. I measured everything, but at first, you really don't know exactly how much you can eat. I ate really, really slow and stopped the moment I felt anything at all (which was generally less than my measured portion). "Full" will no longer be what you imagine it to be. I haven't felt that over stuffed turkey feeling at all since surgery.

"Full" ultimately is not what it used to be for me. As Gwen says if you are really "full" you probably overrate. I also measure and now know when I am approaching full and stop. Hard to explain, but you'll experience it within a few months. At somewhere around 2-3 months I had 2 times when I had a bite past the "I am approaching full" feeling and tipped over the edge. I felt absolutely awful and thought I was going to vomit. I didn't, but it took 20-30 minutes of hanging around in the bathroom to be sure. I learned quickly to avoid that!
