Good News/Bad News: NSV + Nausea

Okay, the good news first...I am 2-1/2 months out of surgery, and St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Shop is getting a closet full of summer clothes! It's starting to hit the 80's here in Northern Arizona, so I went through my closet and was delighted to find that I couldn't wear most of my clothes from last summer. Good news is that I had saved enough clothing from thinner days to get through a few months without having to buy anything new. NSV!

BTW, DH has also lost about 15 lbs. in supporting me and eating smarter.

Now the not so great. Food just doesn't taste good. It seems like every time I eat something (and I'm very protein focused), within a minute or two I feel nauseous. Not sick to my stomach level, but just ugggh. Has anyone experienced that? I'm beginning to dread the idea of eating!

Would also appreciate tips for getting more water. I forget to drink, and even when I set a phone alarm, I get used to it and let it go by (I am ADHD, so focus is not one of my better gifts!) Used to be that I could gulp lots of water...not anymore.

Just keeping on....

Pat

Nausea and dehydration are often linked. Nausea and acid are also often linked. Are you taking a PPI still, like Nexium or Prilosec?

My advice for drinking would be an alarm so.. hm. I wonder if there's an app specifically for people who adjust to alarms? Like.. if there's an app that random picks a different sound each time?

Maybe, instead of a phone alarm, use an actual timer and put it far enough away from you that you have to get up to turn it off? And put your bottle near the timer? That might work for you?

Great ideas. Didn't realize there might be a connection between dehydration and nausea. Thanks!

Find something you enjoy drinking and then just keep a container of it with you - whether it be tea, crystal lite or jus****er and sip - I find if it's by my side, i drink

Congrats on the NSVNausea can also be caused by eating too large bites of food, or eating too quickly.

First Congratulations.

Yes food can absolutely not taste good. Your tastebuds get very finicky. Still to this day I never know if my tastebuds will get excited over food until I start eating it, then it's like a surprise.

Good to know. On St. Patrick's Day I made DH corned beef and cabbage with boiled potatoes and carrots. I could barely get through a small slice of lean corned beef. However, I took a small bit of potato and it was delicious. (I knew better than to start filling up on them though!) So I understand what you mean about surprises.

One of my pre-surgery enjoyments/hobbies was cooking and canning for others, and I've been good at it. I thought that not being able to eat what I cook would be difficult or tempting, but I find...surprisingly...that it's not. I still enjoy cooking even when it's something I can't eat. Thank God for that...

Oh I hear this! If I eat too quickly, and I do if I am not "mindful", I get horribly nauseous, and sometimes throw up or have "toad froth". I'm not wonderful about slowing down, but am learning.

Regarding liquids; I have found I like lime water, or cucumber water, from the refrigerator. It's easy to keep made up, and it goes down more easily than plain water. I also found Crystal lite (or the generic) helps, or a cup of decaf constant comment tea. Or decaf coffee. Then I add Premier Protein shake in vanilla, so I get liquids and protein, and it tastes a bit like a latte.

I do love cooking still, and on a few things I have to "taste" as I go, but am making better notes on my recipes so I won't have to continue doing that.

Hope you are feeling better! And congratulations on your DH doing well by changing his diet.
