Full liquids

I've been trying to get a protein shake down for over 2 hours. My gut is just churning and making the most gawdawful noises. I haven't puked (yet).

Is this normal? And does this count towards my fluids? I make it with almond milk and ice. This is Day 4 post op.

Thanks

Sometimes...ok most often my tummy still sounds like a war is being raged. I'm almost three months out.

i counted my protein shakes towards my fluid intake!

If you're blending it with ice, you should stop doing that. Mix it with the minimum quantity of liquids (normally 8oz). You are adding bulk with ice and that makes it more filling.

You can count it towards your liquids for the day as well.

Edited to add: My stomach is still very loud during digestion or if I drink on a really empty stomach. It's disruptive in meetings still! I'm almost 17 months out.

The temperature might be an issue. Sometimes people have better luck with room temperature, warm, luke warm, etc. Experiment.

Liquids are liquids - they all count to your fluid intake.

That's ok. It's a time investment, but keep trying to drink it however you can. Hydration is more important than protein at this early stage so if you have to drink bone broth or almond milk or tea instead of protein shake then do that to stay hydrated. This part goes by fast!

My stomach made the weirdest noises right after surgery. It was growl all the time despite not being overly hungry. Protein shakes definitely count towards fluids. I also had a hard time getting it down in under two hours, my doctor said that was normal. I also found out that I can no longer tolerate ice cold drinks. I'm 10 weeks out and my stomach rarely growls and I'm starting to drin**** cold drinks again, but slowly.

Congrats on your surgery! You're going to kill it. :)

Tessie, that sounds terrible. Please call your doctor if you even start to puke or think your are going to start. Puking might tear open a staple in your sleeve. Maybe try laying on your left side when you are trying to drink. That might help get fluids down for now. Do not take in any air when you swallow.

Thank you crqving!

I didn't throw up, haven't even felt like it yet, but those gurgles! And this morning was the only time I've felt them. I'm also wearing an anti-nausea patch behind my ear, and have another one to put on Wednesday. So hopefully I won't puke at all. I need to slow down. That's what I'm working on now!

I also made some watered down cream of broccoli soup. 5 servings, each cup is 4 oz. I'll have one of those later, but for dinner I'm having Pho broth.

Protein shakes took me a long time to drink early out too (I also had the churning gut). BTW, some churning and noise can be normal after VSG. I still have that pretty frequently, though I don't feel sick at all.

I also had problems with the shakes - many of us do. I wish there was a standard answer.

What worked for me was mixing the shake using only enough fluid to get it to a liquid state. Literally just a couple ounces. No ice. I then slammed those nasty things like alcohol shots. It was horrible but I got them down.

I did that for two years until a newbie gave me some suggestions that helped me exponentially. If I do a shake now (which is rare) it's almost pleasant. There are lots of docs that don't have their patients drink protein shakes at all or at least not after healing. For me they are necessary still at times and I always wish I'd kept track of the OH member who took the time to give me some ideas so I could thank her.

Hang in. It gets better.
