What was your immediate recovery like?

I noticed if I have overeaten and recline or lay down - which you think would make you feel better, i vomit. Not forced, I just get nauseated and up comes the food - which results in me feeling immediately better. Of course, I try not to eat to that point, but occasionally it happens.

Gwen, so glad to see this topic on here.

I don't vomit; I have "toad froth" which to me is worse -- it is bubbly slimy okra-like junk that comes bubbling up if 1) I eat too fast or 2) I eat too much or 3) I venture into something that has more oil/fat than I'm used to. I'm at a year, and still have to be careful.

That said, my digestion system has always been where I carry my stress; I've had colon cancer and have celiac disease, so my stomach and remaining colon may be a tad bit more sensitive.

On the basis of damage to teeth, electrolyte imbalance (including potassium) that can happen, I think it should be brought to a doctor's attention. You can have some serious side effects.

Gwen- My wife has had a gastric band for 10 years. She still gets nauseous frequently, even though her band is completely emptied of fluids. Her GP thinks it may be mental at this point.

She wants the band removed but is terrified she will gain all her lost weight back (over 150 lbs). She has considered a revision to VSG but our surgeons don't recommend revision and insurance will not cover it because of her low BMI.

On a side note... despite her issues with her gastric band, she is 100% completely supportive of me having a VSG. She wishes she would have chosen VSG when she started her journey.

Is she seeing a therapist to address her fear?

I threw up today after eating something I shouldn't (berry pie), and in the first week after surgery I had water come back up when I drank too quickly instead of tiny sips. I don't think it had made it to my stomach though, just my esophagus. For the first week after surgery actually I felt like anything I put in my mouth (all fluids) would sit at the bottom of my esophagus and slowly drain down into my stomach, like a clogged bathtub drain.

I'm 18 months post-op (RNY, but still thought I'd share) and still have to be very careful or I end up vomiting. Eating too fast is usually the culprit, but sometimes eating too much can also cause it. Sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason.

I believe it's due to a very narrow stoma. I do not want it stretched as I like the restriction and don't want to the food to go down easier/faster. I have no issue at all with fluids, ever, so it's not endangering me.

It happens a lot when I travel as well - I think I may get some swelling when I fly or something and have to be careful for a day or two after.

It's a very different experience from pre-op vomiting. Maybe TMI, but I get a pain in my stomach, and while I will not start spontaneously vomiting, if I just bend at the waist, I will vomit. And it is as close to exactly what I just swallowed as can be.

Sorry for the detail, just trying to give some insight into someone who has issues with vomiting post-op.

The longer I'm post-op, the better I get at avoiding this situation. It doesn't happen very frequently any more, but does still happen time to time.
