Hello, I am new to this site. I am 2 weeks away from having VSG (11/27/18) and I am so excited for this journey. I have looked through many of your posts and it has been so encouraging to see all of your successes. I have been overweight and obese all of my life. I grew up being told not to waste food and having to sit at the table until every bit of my food was gone. Which led to larger portion sizes and I never made healthier food choices. I lost weight in college with medicine but that came back over a few years. I've tried many diets and exercise regimens and have not been successful. I took about a year and a half to consider and research surgery and decided this was the route for me.

In preparing for surgery, I've added more weight and resistance training to my workout regimen to build muscle and I've gone from 275 to 266 since the beginning of October. I've begun to make healthier choices and eat meals on a small salad plate. My long term goal is to be 165-170 lbs. The smallest number I ever remember seeing on a scale is 184 so just being under that is great.

I am 27 and have a small child and I want to stay active and healthy for as long as I can. Seeing your successes has helped motivate me and given me reassurance. Thank each and every one of you and keep up the great work.

Welcome! I'm pretty new here too, but wow is this forum amazingly packed with super supportive people! I am 3 weeks post-op with VSG, and I'm happy to be here experiencing such a supportive group!

Best of luck in on your journey!

Welcome and congrats on your upcoming surgery! In addition to your exercising, I hope you've added, or are considering adding, therapy to your new lifestyle. For me, changing that brain stuff has been the number one factor in success. Surgery is awesome, exercise is awesome, but it's my brain that made me obese, not my stomach, and surgery only changed my stomach.

If you're about to start a pre-op liquid diet, I recommend trying to keep yourself as busy as possible to survive that :) I read through all of the old VSG posts I could during my pre-op and felt really prepared.

Thank you for the advice! I had been told about a local bariatric surgery support group but not about a therapist and I think that would definitely help me. And congratulations on all your success!

Support groups can be very variable in their usefulness. I tried out one that was "community" organized early on in my WLS process and it was fairly horrible. Now I go to one that's organized by a local bariatric surgery group and it's better, but I still have to control my eyes so they don't roll and I cringe that they do VSG for everyone regardless of GERD and diabetes history.

Finding a therapist you click with can take some trial and error, but, imo, it's totally worth it.

I am also scheduled to have VSG surgery on 11.27. I'm day two of the liquid diet and I must say I've had a constant headache. I am also a nervous wreck I have never had surgery and my surgery is two hours away from home. I wish you the best of luck!
