What do you eat when you're on the run?

Say I go golfing or am on the motorcycle all day or traveling and in air ports etc all day...what's your go to meal? Is there a protein bar that is the equivalent of a HPMR Shake? I'm currently almost 4 months post surgery and my meals are approximately 3oz. I'm looking for something I can conveniently stash in my desk drawer or glove box. I really enjoy those 2oz Protein Packs made by Oscar Meyer but they need to be refrigerated.

Quest bars are the best of the bunch when it comes to protein bars, they've got a great protein to calorie ratio and there are a lot of flavors. Protein bars tend to be nothing more than glorified candy bars, but Quest bars are okay. They might make you crave sweet stuff, though, so they can be a slippery slope for some people.

Other ideas are tuna pouches - those don't need refrigeration and they're easy to eat with a fork straight from the pouch. Various jerky types can also work well, but you need to read the nutrition information and ingredients.

Gwen,

You're almost 5 years post surgery. I did eat a lot of those tuna packages while on the 2oz portion of my post surgery diet. You are back up to 8oz or more portions now is my understanding. Do you still eat 2oz portions or were you providing advice for my situation? Both are appreciated.

Any specific jerkeys you recommend or things to look for in jerky? In the time since you replied to my post, I've tried a Quest bar. They're not bad. I will only resort to them in a pinch. They are sweet considering they only have 2 grams of sugar. Thanks for the info.

I eat 3-5 ounces, 3 meals a day. No reason for me to eat more than that. I still find a tuna pouch to be satisfactory.

I look for foods that have no more than 10 calories per gram of protein. I make my own jerky, but lots of people like Jack Links.

I agree with Gwen, Quest bars are my go to on the run meal. I also keep packets of Jason's almond and peanut butters and a snack bag of roasted pumpkin seeds.

Can a lunch box fit in a side bag on the motorcycle? Just enough to put a shake and a few protein snacks and an ice pack? Otherwise, I did a lot of Kays Naturals- they have protein type bagged snacks that the ratios were not too terrible on. Wrapped string cheese can handle not being refrigerated for several hours. Beef or some other type of jerky. I buy the Pure Protein protein bars from Costco, cheaper than Quest but not as good. Check some of the snacks, Costco has some type of bean snack that I think is called Badda Badda Bean or something goofy like that- decent amount of protein and ratios are not too bad, not to mention tasty.Lack of refrigeration is tough, normally I at least can do a lunchbox thing. Good luck!

No room for a lunch box. String cheese is a great idea. I had been advised to stay away from all processed cheeses. Easier said than done.

The bean snack from Costco...do you just eat it straight or do you dip carrots or something in to it?

Thanks for the input.

Can you eat nuts yet? They are a good quick snack. You might want to hit the store just looking for different things. I actually love the Pure Protein bars from Costco also Premier Protein shake don't need to be refrigerated, I will mix them with coffee (both iced and hot) or add just ice when I want them to get them cold.

I found that I love Chomps jerky sticks. You can buy them online or sometimes Trader Joe's has them in stock. They travel great!
