Good morning and Happy Sunday! I've been MIA for awhile woth lots of big life changes. My wife and I both accepted positions teaching in Memphis (We were just over the border in Mississippi.) So, the last week has been a haze of cleaning classrooms and packing up supplies, saying tearful goodbyes to colleagues, etc.

I'm excited for this Summer! I'm hoping to have a lot more time to exercise during June or July. I've started really looking forward to my morning walk.

Qotd: I set phone reminders for everything. I also print out a blank calendar to jot down appointments and such for each month because I like to look at a handwritten one.

B: half an English muffin, sausage patty, cheese

L: premier protein chocolate

D: No idea, we will be at a dinner party

Good morning! This is the last Monday that we have SCHOOL, so that's nice! Woo-hoo! This summer, I'll be working at Circle K and tutoring to make a little extra money to hopefully put on my credit card bills. My wife accepted a much better paying job in Tennessee, so that's nice. I'm hoping it makes next year easier on us.

I got a new tutoring student for the summer, and she seems like a GREAT kid! She's in foster care and missed a couple years of school, so we will have a busy summer. I really love tutoring because I get to work with kids one-on-one.

QOTD: Well, we stay VERY busy, so we don't get any "down" time usually. We both have multiple jobs, so a vacation is usually a three or four-day affair with work the next day after returning. Sometimes it will take us a week to unpack and catch up on stuff afterwards.

B: a handful of almonds

L: Tuna lunch kit (230 cal...NOT the one with the cookie, lol!)

D: Unsure...turkey tenderloin or turkey sausage and eggs

Snacks: Almonds, maybe half a protein shake, hopefully some yogurt when I get home

I've had GERD for a few years; it runs in the family (and yes, I am the only obese one.)

I took a one a day pantoprazole before surgery and I still take it now. It works fine.

My doctor and surgeon agreed to try to take me off of it in December because some studies have shown long-term effects of PPI's that are less than exciting. If it doesn't work, then I'll keep taking it.

Topic: RE: Surgery Date: Wednesday, May 23rd

I had the same issues; in the end, however, I knew that I would die if I didn't have the surgery. Don't get me wrong; I was 378 at my consult and generally in good health besides the obesity...but I know it wouldn't have lasted long. I was headed for a wheelchair within the next decade and it made the decision easy.

I have social anxiety and general anxiety, and it gets bad. My meds help. I thought for sure I was going to have deep vein thrombosis or an embolism or something CRAZY. But it was fine. It was a quick, laparoscopic surgery. I woke up in pain but they quickly took care of that. The gas pains were horrible, but walking fixed it. I stayed one night and slept in the recliner a few nights. It was okay. Honestly, my wisdom teeth and tonsils were both MUCH WORSE.

Now, here I am...6 months later and 100 pounds lighter. It's worth it. Focus on the positive. Distract yourself. CONGRATULATIONS! You GOT THIS!

Topic: RE: General Question ...Sort of

I'm sorry that you have had this experience. It sounds truly awful.

Point 1-Not losing weight-Are you sticking to the basics? Any surgery can be "eaten around" once fully healed. Get plenty of water (I shoot for 80 oz but alway**** 64), get your protein in, and stay away from chips, crackers, bread, pasta, rice, fried food, etc. Don't drink any calories. I've been bad a few times, so I am well aware how easy it is to eat ice cream or mashed potatoes. Just don't do it during loss phase.

Point 2-Your doctor sounds like a complete jerk. My surgeon has been nothing but kind and encouraging for every post-op visit. My practice requires 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, and 1-year appointments because my surgeon is very thorough.I've heard that this is atypical; there may not be a reason that you have to keep seeing him. Meeting with the dietician and support group is optional. I still have my labs drawn by my PCP, though.

Many people never see their surgeon again after surgery. This is not my experience, but every practice is different. A PCP that's knowledgeable about WLS can help you, I'm sure. Call your insurance, see who you can see. Then, call around and see who has seen previous WLS patients.

Good luck!!!! Don't feel defeated! Keep moving forward, researching, and advocating for yourself. :-)

Good morning!

I feel like I have been so BUSY every day. It's nice to read a bit about others' day-to-day lives on here every now and again. :-) I've been struggling, to be honest. Please send some vibes my way.

QOTD: In 2008 at this time, I was one week away from my high school graduation. I cannot believe it's been just about 10 years since the night that I graduated high school. It feels like a lifetime and yesterday somehow at the same time. I started going to a local community college and working full time. My father had just died a couple years before, and I was still recovering from it, to be honest. So, in 10 years, I've earned two degrees, worked three jobs, gotten married, and I've changed a lot. I'm not financially stable nor do I have children (both things I wanted by now) but sometimes life has other ideas. I'll get there. We'll get there. Honestly, I feel so much more energy and drive now that I can move properly again. The difference between 390 and 290 was HUGE, so I cannot imagine what I'll feel like when I get down below 250. I cannot wait! My 6 month surgiversary is in a couple weeks, and I am just so happy that I did it.

Good afternoon! Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week and it was a true struggle. There were doughnuts and goodies EVERY DAY. I abstained got the most part, but I did give in and nibble at a fruity pebbles treat one of my kids made for me one day. One day, one of the booster clubs made turkey meatballs with sides, so that was a good one :-)

HOWEVER! My sweet Book Club kiddos surprised me with an edible arrangement and a big bag of letters, cards, and healthy snacks. They filled it with the stuff they see me eating now (peanut butter, apples, beef jerky, tuna, etc.) I bawled like a baby. Keep in mind, 80% of our kids receive free lunch and we are in the middle of nowhere, MS. The closest edible arrangement place is an hour away, so their thoughtfulness and love really touched me. I've loopedd up with the same kids for the past three years (8th, 9th, 10th), so they saw me at 400 lb and they see me now. When they tell me how well I'm doing, for some reason it means so much more.

I'm looking forward to a Todrick Hall concert with friends tomorrow night. I am also excited about taking a personal day for Tuesday. I need the sleep the next morning and my kids need the brain break before their state test anyway. I'm hoping to get the exercise bike my brother is giving me moved to our house somehow AND I want to find some type of regular summer fitness activity. I take walks on my own, and I do some toning videos. I think a group activity would be fun though, and I'm supposed to be working on being more social in real life.

QOTD: My favorite vacation ever would have to be my honeymoon. My wife and I took a few weeks off and traveled through Virginia and Tennessee. Then, we stayed in NYC for a week and DC for a few days. My dream vacation is a three-week multi-city extravaganza that I've planned multiple times on a variety of sites. It includes Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Amsterdam. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to take this until we are a little bit older. Right now, all the money we can save is going towards the down payment and our future baby. Sperm is quite expensive when you have to purchase it from a bank! Haha!

Wow. I see that I've prattled on a little too much! Sorry!

1: string cheese

2. Chicken, squash, pesto

3. Skinnypop popcorn and half a protein shake (30 minutes apart)

4. Turkey loin or similar with salad

I'm on my 4th bottle of water and I've taken my vitamins!

Topic: RE: CAFFEINE!!

Most surgeons have a specific timeframe, at least in my experience. My plan allowed caffeine after 8 weeks. I only had it in coffee, obviously. I'm almost 5 months out, and I still drink only water (sometimes with crystal light) and coffee.

I try not to have coffee everyday so I don't get so addicted to caffeine again. Some of the best energy I had was right after surgery when my body was caffeine free.

Good morning!

It's Thursday....I'm looking forward to Friday. We are going to a little get-together tomorrow night for dinner and games! I haven't been out in awhile, so I'm looking forward to it.

QOTD: What is your favorite thing to do on a rainy day (when not working)?

I literally work almost all of the time. I'm off from both jobs on Saturday, but it's generally kitchen and bathroom cleaning in the morning and laundry in the afternoon. If I have nothing to do, I like to catch up on a show like Fear the Walking Dead or Grey's Anatomy or read a good book.

Right now, I'm reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, and I am REALLY enjoying it! I joined the book of the month club online, and I get to pick a new book every month from a list of five. I really like it. If anyone is interested, send me a message. I have a link for a free extra book for your first month.

B: Sugar free, Nonfat Latte

L: Unsure. I have some tuna and crackers but I may be school lunch if it's not awful. I kind of want something warm. It's a cold, rainy day here right now.

Good morning and happy Wednesday! Yesterday was a frantic day for me. Right after lunch, one of my kiddos passed out and had a 15 minute seizure. We are very rural, so it took the ambulance almost 25 minutes to get here. I've had this boy since 8th grade, so I know his mother and he has NOT been diagnosed with a disorder. Found out last night that he's going to be okay and back at school tomorrow. I was TERRIFIED! I have after school tutoring today (which I am NOT thrilled about, but it's only 45 minutes) and then I get to take my nephew to the park again. We went yesterday (it was 68 degrees and beautiful!) and I was able to do some walking while watching him play. I have a feeling that I'll be getting MUCH more exercise over the summer now.

QOTD: I guess the most interesting place I've ever been would have to be a toss-up between San Diego and New York City. Honestly, I really enjoyed Little Rock too, but it's just nowhere near the same level of awesome. We spent half of our honeymoon in New York (I saved for a year) in a townhouse on Staten Island. It was so nice, being able to get up, walk to the ferry, ride over to Manhattan for free, and explore. We actually really liked the flavor of Staten Island. We spent some time walking the area and just being there. We went to Greenwich Village and enjoyed Judd Apatow and some other big name comedians at The Comedy Cellar. We went to Stonewall, saw the new memorial park, saw the statue of liberty, Rockefeller Center, had a dragnificient brunch at LIPS, went to the Staten Island Pride Parade, etc. The adult stores in NYC are also on point compared to the ones in Mississippi. We saw Chicago on Broadway, and it was pretty great. Sidenote, I was SO large at the time (at my heaviest) that I couldn't fit in the seats. We ended up getting our own private show box with drinks. That was cool. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that I NEVER have to worry about a seat now. I'm sitting at 282 as of this morning, and I haven't had a problem since I've been under 300. It's really refreshing and encouraging!

M1: Nonfat, Sugar-free latte

M2: Oikos Triple Zero Peach Yogurt

Good morning! I'm feeling pretty perky today...might have something to do with the latte that I had!

QOTD: Well, this is slightly embarrassing, but I really don't have anything. My grandparents were all gone by the time I was old enough to care and my father was pretty destitute when he passed. My sister got his 300 ring (he was a bowler) but I'm more about the memories. If we are just talking objects, I guess I would have to say my car (went a year without one, expensive year), my Kindle e-reader, and my recliner. It really hurt to lay down after my surgery for some reason, so my wife found a wonderfully COMFY used recliner for me to sleep in. I love it! It's puffy and it's really my favorite chair. I have wished, in the past, that I had an old piece of jewelry, a heirloom china set, or an old quilt...something that MEANS something. I should try to acquire some objects so that I have something to pass down to my kids.

M1: Nonfat, sugar free latte

M2: half a premier chocolate shake left over from yesterday

M3: salami, mozzarella, a few melba toast

M4: I'm hoping for salads with goat cheese and chicken again...I may make some pork chops, if not.

I eat about 1200 a day (per my team) and I am still consistently losing. However, I was QUITE large when I started (378), so I am at 284 right now. I've almost lost 100 pounds. If I stop losing weight consistently or have too much of a stall, then I will adjust.

And don't get me wrong; some days I have between 700-900. It just depends on the day.

Pay attention to your body and be methodical. Graph the trend of your weight loss. Be mindful of what's going. Many people can successfully lose weight at 1400 calories, but it will be slower. Others may need to be much lower. It really depends on your body's metabolic rate. My nutritionist said that two people can eat the exact same plan/items and have different results.

Topic: RE: Whatcha Eating Today VSGers? Monday, April 16, 2018

Good morning! Another crazy Monday....had a parent call up here today because I canceled tutoring for a doctor's appointment. It kind of ruffled my feathers. Tutoring is an extra responsibility that we are not required to do. As such, I cancel it when I have other matters that I need to attend to (keep in mind, I live 40 minutes away) The child has been pestering me because she hasn't passed her state assessment to graduate, but she's done NONE of the work that I have assigned online or sent home. GRAWR. I've canceled four times all year, which I think is pretty great considering I offer it (ON MY OWN) every Monday and some Wednesdays. I feel unappreciated and a bit whiny today. Sorry!

QOTD: Well, I have some control issues initiated by some life problems. My father passed when I was 15, and my mother is a raging alcoholic. So, I took over and made sure the mortgage, lights, water, and phones got paid immediately when my father's benefit money came in each month. Then, my mom would typically blow the rest on drugs and alcohol. I got a job in high school to ensure we had money for others things we needed. My mom developed encephalopathy from her excessive drinking when I was 20, and now she has short-term memory loss and dementia. I ensure that her mortgage, lights, water, and phone bill are paid each month. Then, I pay our rent, lights, water, car notes, car insurances, phone bills, etc. Then I check all of our bank accounts (I'm on my mother's and brother's because he was 14 when he started working and he needed an adult on his and my mother is not legally capable of handling her own finances anymore) and ensure that none are overdrawn. I do all the grocery shopping for my house and my brother and sister usually try to stock my mother up. I fill her medicine box every Sunday. I take her to all of her doctor appointments; I also schedule my appointments and my nephew's checkups. It's tiring. Sometimes, I just want to lay down and not move for a few hours so that I can mentally process it all (haha!) The last few days of the month are rough with getting everything done. I've tried to delegate, but then things get behind or messed up. Now, I get so anxious when I let others do things that I can barely handle it.

M1: salsa chicken and a few baked tortilla chips

M2: 1.5 string cheese sticks

M3: premier protein shake (drink it on the way home, probably)

M4: I'm hoping for more salsa chicken. If it's gone, I'll probably make a salad with some leftover buffalo chicken lunchmeat and some goat cheese.

Has anyone else discovered the Skinny Girl dressings? They are so cheap, lowfat, no sugar...winner!

If you are a fan of fudgesicles, Kroger makes their own brand that are low fat/ no sugar added. They are delicious, 60 calories, and they really do the trick when I want a sweet.

Good morning! I'm glad you're back, Gwen.

I'm at the second job again today. I'm feeling a little disappointed. I met with an advisor about getting my doctorate, and while my qualifications and scores are sufficient, I simply cannot justify the expense. Even with partial tuition deductions for being a PS teacher, the degree would cost me roughly $35,000 over 3 years.

This wouldn't be so bad if I pursued a Principal position immediately, but I want to stay in the trenches for several more years and then move into Curriculum and Instruction development and leadership... neither of which rivals a principal salary. I'm going to put this idea on the back burner for about 8 years and then revisit it.

Qotd: Well, June is kind of hard for me. June 27th is my dad's birthday, and he died when I was 15. Father's Day is also that month... If he had not died so traumatically, maybe I would be able to deal with it better. He also died three days before Christmas, so the holidays have never been the same. DW is in her thirties and has literally all of her grandparents, her parents, and all her aunts and uncles... so it's kind of hard for her to understand. However, she lost her stepfather last year right after Thanksgiving, so honestly just the whole holiday season... has some bad memories

M1: hillshire salami small plate-- I don't regularly eat food for breakfast, but I I did my aerobics video as soon as I got to work and was ravenous afterwards.

M2- premier chocolate shake

M3- deli buffalo chicken and cheddar cheese

M4- turkey loin and side salad with goat cheese

Good morning! I'm hoping for a productive weekend, as well. DW and I need to go and get a new shirt or two for work and we have a seminar to attend in Jackson tomorrow. I'm working my 2nd job on Sunday, but I'm hoping that I can get the house halfway decent that day to start next week off right!

I've decided I'm taking a personal day next week to have a ME day. I don't do that often, but I checked and I have 5 personal days. I may as well take one!

QOTD: I have ridden second on a motorcycle a few times, but I have no desire to own one or ride one regularly. It's nice and it's fun, but it's more dangerous and I am just not about that life. Also, I'd hate for my younger nephews/future children to want one. It would give me some serious anxiety.

M1: latte

M2: sausage patty

M3: TBD

M4: Crockpot chicken soup with a few saltines

Snacks: Peanut Butter/half a banana

I like to volunteer locally, but I rarely have time between work. There are too many organizations that make money off of their volunteers. I like to see results in my community.

I like to help Friends for Life, which is one of the biggest (as far as impact and clients) organizations in the Mid-South that assists individuals that are HIV positive. I'm actually a food ambassador for their Dining Out fundraiser at the end of this month. If you are near the Mid-South area, come check it out!

I also like to volunteer with the MGLCC-Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center. This organization sponsors youth groups, pride parades, and several other organizations and programs around the city.

Good morning and HAPPY Thursday! I've never posted this before, but I see that we are missing one for this morning! I hope this is okay. I'm looking forward to the weekend, even with the allergy attack that I'm currently experiencing. It may also be a small cold....every morning has been in the upper thirties/lower forties, but each afternoon is in the mid 60s-70s. It's wreaking some havoc. I'm hoping to take my nephew to the park today and have time to get a manicure. We shall see! I am NOT tutoring today, so I get to run out the door at 3:30.

QOTD: Do you volunteer? Where? If not, what causes and charities are you passionate about?

I'll answer below.

B: Latte

L: Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad with saltines

D: Probably crockpot chicken soup

Snacks: possibly some beef jerky, peanut butter, maybe half a banana if I am able to take my walk today

Well, it's not really "cheaper" anywhere in the US, that I have discovered.

I got this from the internet (quick search, not fleshed out)

The average cost of gastric bypass surgery is $23,000, the average cost of lap band is $14,500, and the average cost of sleeve gastrectomy surgery is $14,900.

This seems about right. My insurance covered the surgery, and my 20% cost was $1,989.00

My friends that have had it done in Mexico have paid between $3-5,000 dollars (including airfare.)
