Anybody else have this?

So I have never in my life been lactose intolerant.  I wasn't pre-op, and I wasn't post-op.

About 2 months ago, I started having room clearing gas.  Nothing killed it, until in desperation I started taking lactaid tablets with my shakes.

No more problem.

Either it's a weird coincidence, or I developed lactose intolerance over 2 year out from surgery.  I'm not willing to give up on the shakes I've figured out I like, so I guess I'll just be popping lactaids twice a day.  Yogurt doesn't bother me for some reason, nor does cheese, just the shakes.

Weird.

I agree that you don't want to give up protein shakes.  It is weird that you developed lactose intolerance so far out.

There are some good shakes that are also lactose-free.  All the Unjury and Isopure ones are, and I haven't had any problems with Syntrax either.  I mix the chocolate or vanilla ones with lactose-free skim milk, and enjoy them that way. If you like cheese, most cheddar cheese is lactose free or very low lactose.  All of the Cabot cheeses are lactose free, so I eat them alot.

God luck

Thanks, Eliza.  I tried Unjury early out... pouch detested it (and yes, this was after it settled down but still relatively early).

Cheese isn't an issue for me for whateve reason.

I think I'll just keep popping lactaid pills.  Unless I want to clear the room, that is. LOL!

Did you switch brands of protein lately????? I had the gassy ass when I switched -- it (the jug) now sits on the floor of my pantry!!!

Nope, been on the same two brands for the past year and a half, and the same tubs since before this started, so it's a change in me, not in the protein.

Same brand of milk as well.

Interesting..

I haven't been drinking my protein shakes regularly because I too get real gassy and constipated when I do...  I haven't changed my protein either.

I don't have problems with cheese - milk, etc either.  But protein - watch out!!

Something to think about

Hmmm... genetic twins, maybe?

I guess we'll experiment on ourselves and see what works!

Can't help you there but maybe I should try lactaid.  I go through stages where I think the entire house must reek because of my gas!  And I'm not sure it's just paranoia!  LOL

It's true that people get more lactose intolerant over time...

The lactose in milk is turned into something else during the cheese and yogurt making process so there is a lot less of it than in milk. With protein shakes, the amount can vary wildly. Whey protein isolate has had all the lactose removed but whey protein concentrate still has some and some other milk proteins are full of lactose.

Thanks for the info.  I do use isolate for my shakes, so it's not the protein itself, it's got to be the milk.  I use concentrate to goose the protein content in my yogurt, but that hasn't been the problem.  So again, we're at the lactose in the skim milk.

When DD was a toddler, she was lactose intolerant, and we kept lactaid drops in the diaper bag in case we couldn't get lactaid milk out and about.  It left a small curdle where the drop hit, so even though I haven't seen those this time out, I think I'll stick with a couple of tablets I can pop.

Yup, lactaid tabs for now!
