what to expect???
Hi everyone. I have decided to have the RNY and have finished everything my insurance required, now I'm just waiting for insurance approval. My question has to do with expected weight loss. Since I am a light weight Ionly have about 100 lbs to lose. If I stick to my surgeons plan(and i plan to) how much can I expect to lose in the first year? My surgeon says 60-80 percent. I would like to hear how most of you have done being a light weight.
I am at 5 months in a few days. I seem to be losing faster than what your surgeon expects, so that makes me happy! Here are my actual losses, but remember everyone is different and don't use this as an expectation. I am thinking about lowering my goal to 145, I'll see when I get closer. 145 would put my BMI at normal. I am at 171 today. So including pre op 2 wk diet I am down 79 lbs. So at 5 months post op I am already at 80% lost! As you can see it is a little slower loss each month. More detailed breakdown is on my profile.

I think a greater % of lightweights reach normal BMI than our heavier friends. Most of us get there in a year. I lost 110 in a year. Some get to goal earlier. The thing to remember is everyone is different and everyone loses at their own rate.
Hope to see more of you. this is a great board.

Here's my first year in eating, exercising and losing:
Calories, Protein & Carbs, Exercise & Weight Loss ...
So normal BMI at 6.5 months, lowest weight (BMI 22) at 10.5 months.
Your surgeon is quoting averages across his entire practice. Lightweights are statistically more likely to get to goal and lose 100% of their excess weight.

It took me about nine months to get to my goal of a 94 lb weight loss. I was down an additional 20 or so lbs by month 13. I stay between 12 and 126 now. My lowest weight was 117.5, at about 18 months post op. i thought it was great at the time but soon realized I looked like death. (This also came on the heals if a diagnosis of and surgery for breast cancer, so I know my friends thought I was dying. I am sure some who were not aware of the WLS thought the end was near fir me. The truth is that the loss had nothing to do with cancer and everything to do with WLS. I must admit that the general anesthesia probably played big part in the loss of the additional pounds. My gallbladder also went during that time and had to be removed).
At 122 I have lost 110% of my excess weight. Not bad for someone who had not weighed 120 anything since the 2nd grade during the 1958-1959 school year!
My PCP said that he would not be unhappy if I ultimately wound up between 130 and 140.
Welcome to the LW board...
And yeah, what THEY said!
