New Protein Powder ...and man was I SICK!!!!

Looking for some feedback.  My darling hubby bought me some new protein powder called "muscle milk".  It has 30g in one scoop and only 8 carbs...so I thought what the heck, I will try it.  I mixed 8 oz whole milk with one scoop.  About 15 minutes after I finished I was writhing in pain.  My stomach from the very top to the very bottom and both sides, were in horrible pain. I have previously used HMR Protein that is only about 15g protein.  So, what in the world made me so sick?  Is anyone familiar with something like this, or even this product?  I want to know what to look for in future mixes!

I thought muscle milk was pretty heavy with sugar and we had to have muscle milk light?? but I don't have the stats in front of me.  I tried some of the light ready to drink once and didn't like it but it didn't make me sick.  Milk has some carbs so maybe the 2 were more than you could do at this point.

edit:  I looked up whole milk and muscle milk.  What I found only had 16g of protein for 1 scoop, 2g sugar which isn't bad.  It may have been the total carbs which would have been around 20 with the milk or you may have had a reaction to one of the ingred. that you haven't had before.  At any rate, you may want to wait a while before trying it again, then mix it with water instead of milk and see if that makes a difference.  Have you been mixing with milk?  could you have developed a lactose intolerance?  It's pretty common after WLS.

how many of the carbs are sugar/ and then mixed with whole milk that has a lot of sugar in it too. Look on the ingredient list and see if there is sugar and how far down the ingredient list it is. Could have been too much sugar at once. Even though VSG'ers don't technically "dump' too much sugar going into our system at once can make us sick.

Are you lactose intolerant?  I know that sometimes I can drink a protein drink and I'm fine and others times they will bloat me up, same protein powder and everything.  I haven't figured that one out yet.

I think it's because you mixed it with milk. And whole milk at that.

Early out a lot of people get sick if they mix their shakes with milk. Muscle milk is made from a combination of milk proteins and most of them contain lactose already. So between that and the lactose in milk, it's too much for our healing tummies.

I just had a Muscle Milk Lite RTD about 20 min before logging on here. It only had 20 g of protein (but 0 g of sugar) so I am also questioning those stats. Maybe your isn't the Muscle Milk (tm) that is made by CytoSports but some knock off?

Possibly the lactose in the milk and the protein might not be whey protein isolate first. If I get too much lactose, it's not good either. Plus, what kind of sweetener are they using in that stuff?

I think at least part of the problem is the whole milk. I would stay away from that indefinitely. Use water then 1% and 2%. It may be lactose intolerance but it could also be the higher fat content from the whole milk. Your body may not be ready for that.

Sorry didn't realize you had the DS so now I realize the additional fat should not have been a problem. It's not unusual though for lactose intolerance to develop 12 months post op.

I'm thinking lactose intolerance as well...the absolute worse gas/bloat I had post op was due to a protein shake made with whole milk (which I had ALWAYS used pre-op).

So I mix mine with water.

Also while he tried to be helpful...Muscle Milk has a BLEND as it's first ingredient not Isolate. Always make sure your protein has Isolate listed first.

Stick with one you already know...or maybe try an egg or soy based protein instead of whey based.

Sorry you experienced this.   This is all a learning experience and what works for someone else might not work for you.

I mix all of my Protein with water.  Milk is extra calories and extra carbs that make me gassy and make my scales move up.
