Six Months...

Jun 08, 2004

I spoke to Mary at St. V's yesterday... I bugged her for about 15 minutes. I still can't get that 3-month thing out of my head. She said that Dr. Cacucci's office has a program like that with an Endocrinologist (sp) but it still sounds dicey and as much as I don't want to wait 6 months, I don't want to burn 3 months doing the wrong thing. So, I guess I'll stick with the 6 months... Sigh.
Mary also told me not to sit around waiting to send everything in. She said I should send it all in, what I have, and maybe I'll get lucky. If not, I can appeal when the 6 months is up. That makes me a little nervous, but I imagine she knows better than I do. So, I'm going to wait until my Sleep Apnea test on the 20th-21st, get my results, get my file and letter from my PCP and send it all in. I'm 90% I have sleep apnea. They classified me as Highly Probable. So, if I have that report, and everything else, and by then I'll be half-way into the 6 months, who knows, maybe I WILL get lucky.

Also, I found out about the support groups here in town and I'm going to start going. I already found a couple of women on the IN boards who go, so it won't be so bad... I just hate walking into places like that, not knowing anyone. It makes me so self-conscious. It doesn't help that thing I'm so self-conscious about is the thing we all have in common, which makes no sense, but hey, I know I'm a head-case. lol

Pyschosis

Jun 06, 2004

Apparently, I have a major psychosis thing going on today. I seem to be addicted the the Message Board and all I'm doing is ranting and raving. 6 months is going to take a lifetime!!!

Give me insurance or give me death!

Jun 03, 2004

Insurance companies drive me NUTS!!!!! I can't ever get a straight answer out of them and then when I even remotely challenge their answers, they get all huffy! I was trying to understand how I could comply with the 3-Month Pre-Surgical Preparatory Regimen listed in the policy letter. Depending who I talked to, it A) Didn't Exist B) Wasn't for me C) Was for 6 months not 3 months or D) Didn't exist!!! When I asked for clarification (this is all in email so I could keep track of their responses, I was told to "Send in what I had" and they'd "Get back with me." Yeah, I'm not sending anything until I'm relatively sure I have ALL my bases covered. I don't want stuff getting lost while I try to get the other stuff they're asking for! So, for now, I'm working on completing the 6-month physician supervised diet and exercise program and my target date for WLS in next Nov-Dec.

The Consult

Apr 27, 2004

I had my consult with Dr. Cacucci at St. Vincent's on the 26th and it went well. The entire staff at St. V's was awesome. They were extremely nice and helpful. There wasn't much of a delay in starting the consult/class and I thought Dr. Cacucci was very impressive. While I didn't really learn anything I hadn't already found out on my own, she was very informative as she went through the procedure, the diet (there's a separate class you have to take), her requirements, etc. I met with her briefly afterward and she said she thought I was a great candidate. So now, I'm waiting on the packet to come from her surgical group so I can send it to Aetna.

In the meantime, I've been calling Aetna, St. Vs and the surgical group insurance coordinator trying to nail down everything I need for my insurance company. I'm SO SCARED I'm not going to meet requirements. There's one piece that's a little evasive and I'm hearing so many different answers. I'm waiting for a call back from the Aetna pro at the surgical group to see if she can reassure me... It's amazing to me that I'm actually in this process... Almost unreal...

On your mark... get set...

After 10 days of wrangling, I FINALLY got my referral in for my initial consult. I had to beg my doctor for the referral, and then after 10 agonizing days of calling the Doc's office and St.Vs office everyday, they FINALLY put my referral in. My doctor isn't thrilled about this and was being, I think, a little passive aggressive by delaying the referral. But, it's there, and I'm in. I have my group consult and first appt with Dr. Cacucci this Monday! Woo-hoo!

This is me at about 277 - a year before surgery. At the time of surgery, I gained another 10 pounds for a total of 287 the day of surgery.
