April 15, 2007 - Lessons Learned

Apr 15, 2007

I had not been losing weight so I went in for a fill. During the day I had great restriction and physically could not overeat, or it would come back up! I stayed full for hours and I really felt I was back on track........until night time. I had horrible reflux, with acid and food coming back up into my lungs while I was asleep and then coughing for hours. I went several days without sleeping all night. I could not eat at least four hours before bed, I could not even drink fluids or I was up all night with the acid/vomit/coughing nightmare. I finally saw my surgeon and got a slight unfill and all of the night time issues went away the very first night. The bad news is, I have reached a point with my LapBand journey where the rest is up to me. I cannot adjust my band to be any tighter because of the reflux so the fill is not as tight as I need it to be to have perfect restriction. The bottom line, the rest of the weight loss and the rest of my life is dependent on me being strong enough to not overeat and to choose the right foods and deal with less than ideal restriction. I never though I would reach a point where I would have to go back to relying more on willpower and less on the LapBand, but here I am 17 months later living this reality. I wouldn't have thought this would happen so late in the game, but it did. The night acid is horrible and I am so glad it was resolved with an unfill but the trade off is working extra hard to continue to fight my eating battle.

March 11-2007 - Lost 65 pounds so far

Mar 11, 2007

I started this journey about 100 pounds over "ideal weight" and I am down 65 pounds. The LapBand literature says that most people will lose 65% of their excess weight so technically I am at goal. I love my new body, wear size 10 and 12's and wouldn't be upset at all if I weren't able to lose any more weight. My shoe size went from a 10 to 8.5 which is what I wore in high school. I never thought I would lose shoe sizes. I look at myself in recent pictures and it is so weird. I have knees, and a neck. Yesterday I bought a pair of shoes in size 8.5 and size Medium belts! It is so surreal. I keep reaching for the XLs and gravitating towards everything black like in the old days. I bought a fitted white shirt! I have normal blood pressue, no skipped heartbeats, normal cholesterol. I don't wake up from snoring anymore. I don't grunt when I get in and out of a car. I don't sweat and get short of breath vacuuming. It's a new life and it's a great one.
