A lot has gone on in the past ?? months. Lol. I just had my 2 year anniversary on 9/20/2009.
I lost another pound, but, don't know how to put it on my weight tracker! Down to 171, but, still not at goal.
My daughter, Melissa is doing wonderful! She is almost to goal and she looks fabulous!
My oldest brother got the DS and will have his one year anniversary in December this year.
And I had to go to 150 mg Synthroid and I hope it is stable now. We'll see!

Changed my meds. on 7/7/08
Jul 14, 2008
As of 7/7/2008 I started to take my Synthroid Throid .175 med. four hours before I take my other vitamins. I have also stopped my acid controller and done OK. I do have heartburn with food that is too spicy hot but, with more water it eases it within a few minutes. A plus to stopping the acid controller is I have lost 4 # in a week.

How many of you reached your goal and are still there?
For how long have you maintained the weight lost?
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel?
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched?
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day?
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks?
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I have. It took me about 15 months. Yes, being I am almost 19 months postop
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? My weight loss was paced and gradually. I didn't lose weight quickly. I can eat more now and even if I eat a lot of carbs which are mostly complex carbs, I haven't gained any weight back. I do gain a bit during my TOM, but it drops back down when I am over that "phase"
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 125 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 3 oz and it hasn't stretch
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? anywhere from minimum of 50g to 150g. I have to eat more than 50g of carbs a day or else suffer massive headaches which is a signal, I need to eat carbs. If I eat food with no carbs or very little carbs, those headaches will occur for me. Once I have something that has some carbs, it disappears in a few minutes.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Both. I will make an effort to eat some sort of meat daily to gt in some protein that is bulk. There are times, I have issues with having no desire to eat or haven't met or know I won't meet my minimum protein quota for the day, so I take a protein drink to help me out.
E) Ar you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)?
nutrition - No, I do not have trouble with my nutrition. I eat daily and make sure it is food with high protein. I eat a lot of ribeye steak and was the first high protein meat I was able to eat at 4 weeks postop with no trouble. Besides, steak has high level of iron and other vitamins and minerals. I basically eat ground beef, steak, chicken, shrimps, crab, lobster. I usually eat grilled salmon for breakfast. Nothing has been off limits to me with the exception of carbonated drinks. It still hurt my tummy, even if flat.
There are days I do have issues with having no desire to eat at all. When that happens, I make the effort to hit the protein drinks to help me out. I make sure, I am well hydrated by drink a lot of milk, Koolaid with Splenda or Tang. I like to drink water during the days that the weather is warm or hot, not during the winter or when it is cold. I do eat food focusing on protein first.
I am trying to get more fat into my diet, but it is difficult for me. I am able to tolerate it, just not used to eating fat since I lived a life that was basically low fat for many years. I am now enjoying eating more fried food with my mind getting conditioned that it is ok and even having an ice cream that is high fat. I have eaten fried and fatty food and haven't gained any weight. For over 18 months, my fat intake has been less than 50g daily which is very low and actually comes out to about 10g fat daily with malabsorption. I am working to get in more fat. It is just difficult at times to try to adjusting myself that it is ok and I can eat more fatty food. I still can't eat much at the postop phase I am at. I have to share food off my hubby's plate when I go out and at home, I eat about a palm worth size and amount of food for 1 meal.
Vitamins - there are days, I do forget to take all my required Calcium Citrate which is 2100-2400gms daily. I do take all my Centrum Performance without missing it. I change from chewable to pills to liquid every once and awhile, since this is for life. Every single bloodwork until this day that I had done have been within range with no deficiencies.
anemia - I do not have anemia or shown any signs of iron deficiencies through my bloodwork
bathroom issues - I do not have bathroom issues at all. I go almost every single day and it is usually once in the early morning. Very rare if I go twice a day. I have not had any diarrhea since having my surgery, after 2 weeks postop. I did have constipation problem awhile back. But, it sorted out, once I took Miralax. Otherwise, no gas or bowel trouble.
My common channel is 150 and my stomach volume started at 100ml. I have lost all of the weight I needed to lose and right now I am about three pounds below goal. I do not track my carbs. I eat meat and fish and do not do protein shakes. So far no nutrition issues and no bathroom issues.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? Count me in
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I've been maintaining my goal weight pretty effortlessly for almost a year and a half now
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? No clue - never asked I trusted my docs experience on that one.
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? About the size of a banana is what my doc said
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I couldn't begin to tell you. All I ever really counted was protein, and kept my consumption of simple carbs to a minimal-moderate amount
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I haven't had a protein drink since I was 5 mos post-op. I intend to keep it that way.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I've been fighting my vitamin D, and it's coming up -- but when I started, the info about D wasn't buzzing around like it does today. I anticipate newbies to have their D under control out of the gate now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I reached my personal goal of 145 pounds at 8 months post op. I'm actually down to 132 pounds, 13 pounds below goal
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I'm still losing and trying to find a set point, apparently. Hoping to hit the gym when I bounce back from tummy tuck and gain some muscle mass
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 70 cc
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 80-90 cc's/ 3 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I haven't been counting lately, but well over 300 b/c I have added juices and sugar drinks to slow my weight loss
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Mostly real meat, but I like boosting my daily intake with a protein drink
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? No problems with nutrition, vits, or anemia. I probably do go to the bathroom more than some DSers. As a pre-op, I went to the bathroom after every big meal. I do the same as a post op some days...but actually do that less often as a post op then I did as a pre-op. TYPICALLY, I start my day with 2-3 different poos early in the morning, and will sometimes have one late in the evening. However, there are times I can go once at breakfast, once at lunch, and once at dinner. It's just the way that I was born. My Mom's side of the family is all this way, get togethers are funny because 30 minutes after we it, it's time for all of us to go! Lol! I don't think that I go more "often" as a post op than I did as a pre-op, I just think my bathroom business is more productive now because I never battle with constipation like I did as a pre-op.
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I am under goal. 124 lbs. now. I am 20 mo's out. I have maintained this weight for about 9 months now. I fluctuate 4 lbs. give or take.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? ??
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? ??
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? About 20 grams, I stay away from carbs.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? REAL MEAT!
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? Once I stopped taking Flagyl, I am much better...no constipation. SW/ 265...CW/ 124
I am at goal and I am 4 1/2 years out.
My CC is 65 cm, my surgeon used the Hess method
I started out with a 3-4 oz stomach
I use the all-or-nothing maintenance plan
Haven't had a protein shake or a bar since 3 months post-op. I do have eggs for breakfast
practically every single day, though.
Bathroom issues are predictable and controllable. I am having a great deal of difficulty with my Vitamin D level, however. I am now up to 200K of D daily plus what is in my MV and my calcium supplement, plus I am tanning. I have a D level pending now. I've never had any anemia and never took any extra iron.
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I reached goal at around 8 months post-op. I lost 100# in 6 months. Then, 20# more over the next 2.
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I've maintained for almost 3 years. I'm 3 yrs 9 months post-op.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 75
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 2-3 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I try to stay below 100, but sometimes I'll hit 200 if I'm doing sweet stuff--which, BTW, has very little attraction for me now.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I definitely eat real meat, and lots of it. However, I'll also have a protein drink from time to time if I feel like I'm not getting in enough protein that day. Some days, I just can't seem to eat very much in the morning and afternoon, just don't have an appetite, so that's when I'll drink my IDS Belgian Chocolate (mixed w/coffee plus half n half), or Syntrax Roadside Lemonade (mixed w/CrystalLight Lemonade)
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I've had low-normal iron; high-low zinc, and high-low D3. I add extra supplements to cover these.
I've never had any bathroom issues. I'm regular, I go once or twice in the morning and that's usually it. Once in a great while, I'll go again in the afternoon if I really ate a lot the day and night before.
I lost almost all of my weight by 18 months, I am higher than my ridiculous low weight(after 2 major plastic surgeries and no exercise for 6 months) and have put back on muscle weight and even some needed padding fat to smooth out the face, arms and legs. I look good, feel terrific so I am at my goal weight!!!!! 6 1/2 years out and would not change a thing.
A) How long is your common channel? Hess method, percentage of total small intestine length measured by surgeon during open DS
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 3 oz, no idea now have not needed an UGI to check
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? as many as I want and can hold
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? have a protein bar twice a day to supplement the meat I eat first at lunch and dinner
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? have had iron deficiency while still menstruating, after early menopause no iron deficiency, B12 was on the low side so I do shots once a month. I have bathroom issues only if I ingest large amounts of movie popcorn drenched in butter and if I eat any amount of dairy. I am milk protein and lactose intolerant-not a great combo to have, this was present before surgery. It seems to be worse now only because I eat less at anyone time making the percentage of dairy higher as a total now, before the alfredo pasta was part of the meal but I ate the salad or soup, breadsticks the grilled chicken and probably would of had a dessert as well, all with 2 or more 8-10oz of fluid---so my gut got less milk protein per volumne of meal. Now I have the grilled chicken and maybe a 1/2 cup of pasta, sip some water have maybe 1/2 a breadstick and am way to full to eat dessert. highest >350/342 start of wls journey/ 186 @6years
A) How long is your common channel? 75cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? no idea, I don't count them.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I do both. I aim for 100 g of protein a day, using a combo of meat and suppliments.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I have had low protein early out, Low vit D, borderline anemia, all fixed by tweaking suppliments. No ongoing issues. I also had a bout with C. Diff bacteria early out, resolved with flagyl.
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I guess I'm at goal at 95% of my EWL lost, although I'd like to lose 10 more pounds and be at 100% EWL.
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I reached goal (100 lbs. lost) at 14 months postop. I'm 30 months postop now and maintaining pretty effortlessly -- so for 16 months.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 75 cm.
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 100 ml., I think.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? No idea. Prolly 2-3 hundred.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? NEVER, touched a protein drink. Real meat, cheese, eggs, nuts for my protein.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? Nope.
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I guess I'm as close to goal as I'm going to get until my plastic surgery in July where, according to my surgeon, I should have about 10 lbs of skin/fat removed from my tummy taking me to exactly the weight I want to be!!
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I've been at this weight give or take 5 lbs for about 4 months, easily maintaining.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 100cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? Either 4 or 5 oz, can't exactly remember.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I never really count carbs, just protein. I take the bread off my burgers, but I eat tortillas and high fiber bread pretty often, But I love my candy and chocolate! I don't care for cakes, pies and cookies, but I LOVE candy!
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I EAT MEAT!!! and lots of it every day! I love meat and can eat any kind with NO trouble at all. Red meat being my favorite. Recently I started adding in a protein shake a day becasue I'm having some major plastic surgery soon and I want to be ready. But that's new. I never had the shakes. I did take the protein vials for the first month.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I'm normal low on my iron. I'm having my non-hormone IUD removed and replaced next month with one WITH hormones to reduce my periods which are now really heavy and long. I'm sure that will help my slight anemia. I usually poop once or twice in the morning, but a lot! Sometimes also at night if I REALLY eat a lot of salad or super carby food, but that's not usual. I'm very regular. 340/182/175 ~ 5'10" I lost 158 lbs!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll answer your questions because I'll get to goal, I just know it
A) 90 cm
B) 3 oz
C) anywhere from 50-100 most days on the lower end
D) meat, meat, meat
E) nutrition - I eat great
vitamins - nope I get all those in too
anemia - preop my levels were high normal and I eat alot of red meat hoping that will keep me in the black
bathroom issues - none, no stink, no dhr, no gas
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't know if this will be helpful or not. In December, I will be 8 years post-op. This is what happened to me on my journey thus far.
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I lost a total of 170 lbs, never really had a goal weight in mind (my lowest weight was 240). Now I think I would like to get to 190-200. I am currently 291.
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I maintained the 240 for years and went on to have a breast lift and reduction, arm surgery, tummy tuck and hip tuck in two different operations. After the second surgery I became anemic (my labs previous to surgery were good). It took six months to get my iron back on track and during that time I went from working out 5-6 times per week with cardio and weight training to doing nothing but going to work and sleeping. It got so bad that I actually fell asleep at my desk a couple times and that was really unusual for me, I was high energy before. I gained 30 lbs during this six months and also turned to comfort/quick foods while I wasn't feeling well. Once that was over and fixed, I was at 270. I maintained 270 for years and got back into working out 5-6 times per week, but my diet never really improved much. I still maintained until I recently fell down some icy stairs and shattered my right arm from shoulder to elbow. That resulted in my being completely immobile for four months and eating comfort foods, which included tons of carbs and sugar. I am six months out from my injury, still in physical therapy, but limited with exercise and now weigh 291. So, I gained 20 during this episode. Sorry for rambling! My eating is the key, it got bad and stayed bad, but the lack of exercise during these periods didn't help. If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 75 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? No idea, my doctor called it a skinny banana.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? Just started back to 50-70 per day. Prior to that I was probably consuming 100's per day easily! Not to mention tons of sugar!!
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Never did protein drinks, I eat all meats.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I did get a bad cause of anemia, but doctors attributed it to blood loss during plastic surgeries I explained above. My labs prior too were fine. Aside from that, I did have a flair up of IBS at one point, but it was an extremly stressful time in my life and once the external issues resolved themselves, I was fine. As far as bathroom behavior is concerned, I go once or twice in the morning and occasionally in the afternoon as well. Very manageable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I reached goal in 11 monthes but continued to lose weight during my second year. I am currently 129 and should be weighing 145. I eat like a fool to try to keep weight on.
A) How long is your common channel? My CC is 100 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? Was told it is 6-8 oz once it was healed.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I have never counted carbs. I figured that if I wasn't happy with my weightloss I would begin counting. I was never unhappy so I haven't counted them to this day.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I have had 1/2 a protein drink in the 2 years I have been post op. It gave me gas and bloating. I get my protein from meats and cheeses mostly.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I just got over C Diff and I feel that has been a culprit in some of my bowel issues for a while. My normal is maybe 4x a day. 3 in the am and one late afternoon.
I do take some supplements... ADEK 3 per day 2 Potassium per day 3 Calcium Citrate 600mg per day. That's pretty much it. I do take flaxseed oil for dry skin and acidophilus as a probiotic. Those are my choice. If I had to complain about anything it would be the need to eat a lot of food. (is that really a complaint?) I need to conciously make myself eat
fattening food. 13 pounds below goal!!! That puts me in the red at 132 pounds!

How many of you reached your goal and are still there? ME
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? Surgery 11/14/06, reached goal in late july, continued to lose a few pounds until mid-august... have been maintaining +/- 5 lbs ever since.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 125cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? I don't know the exact volume... but it was created with a 38-Fr bougie... which I suspect made me somewhere around 3-5 oz.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? To be honest, I don't "count" carbs... though I try to stay clear or minimize the OBVIOUS carb-monsters... like pasta, I only eat as a small side dish now, not as a main course like I sometimes used to.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? primarily meat, cheese and eggs are my protein sources... though there's one drink I love, I use it more as a "snack" or treat... Bolthouse Farms "Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino"... but I don't NEED it for protein.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? Nothing that's "not resolved"... my D was a little low, but it's starting to come up, and I'll be testing again at my next Dr appt at the beginning of July... I've since started 100k vit D, and expect I'll soon be cutting back to 50k

I'm below my surgeon's goal by about 4 pounds and woking towards my goal and have 1/2 pound to go.

E) no problems

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My surgeon's goal is a "normal BMI". I'm 4 months out from my DS and will reach a normal BMI in 13 more pounds lost. My personal goal is another 33lbs. While I'm not totally confident of my own personal goal, I'm confident that I will reach my surgeon's goal in the next couple of months based on the fact that as a lightweight, I'm supposedly destined to lose slower (but didn't) and my loss has been very steady. While I can't claim "GOAL" yet, I'm confident that I will reach it.
To answer your other questions (if relevant)
a. 100
b. 8oz (this is what he said it would be after I healed...I assume that this means "long term" and not right after surgery)
c. 50-100g
d. I eat meat and suppliment when necessary. I at times get sick of the protein drinks and will push more "food protein" when I don't have a taste for them. But, it's not necessarily meat...sometimes it's dairy.
e. I poop once every 2-3 days. Never had any issues. My 3 month labs were excellent. Yes, I'm early out but I'm committed to regular follow and a strict vitamin regime.
Surgery 10/21/05. At goal of 141-144, for over a year now. Got too skinny (low 120s), but ate my way back up.
150 common channel, 3-4 oz stomach
I ate very low carb the first 6 months. Now I just had pasta for dinner! I poop 2 times per day and have very little gas.
I always have a protein shake in the morning with a banana. It's my protein on the go and I like them. I do eat lots of real meat.
As an experiment, my surgeon had me try the new Optisource vitamins that you take only 2 times per day, and the calcium and iron is taken together. YIKES! I went from perfect labs to having anemia, low D, and low calcium. I'm still playing catch up.
My goal was 150 ... I never officially (on my doc's scale) reached UNDER 158 . On my scale I was as low as 153 for a brief second in time... So close yet so far away!
Now I sit at 155-160lbs which technically (if you use 5'6" as my height - as I am between 5'6" and 5'7") I am overweight on the BMI scale !
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I have been maintaining this weight for a little less than 2 years. ( I am over 3 years out of surgery)
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 100cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? At first? Under 30 grams for 18 months. For the last year? Probably 150-200. Now ? I am trying to stay between 50-75 'cause I want to lose 10lbs and get to my goal !!
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Haven't routinely used protein drinks since about 10 months out... I eat meat... chicken, steak, bacon, pork chops, fish, cheese, beans, etc and lots of it!
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? No issues... I have tweaked my vits on occasion. I was low on zinc and copper but it was caught pretty fast.... My B vitamins are off the chart high..... My poop issues early after surgery all centered around eating carbs... if I'd eat some donuts I'd poop... loose stools within an hour or two after eating the carbs. Now I can eat 3 donuts and barely suffer a little gas.... it takes donuts, chips, pizza, bread, fried foods all in a few hours time (and boy can I pack in the food!) to give me diahrea...and even then it's very controlled.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight: I surpassed any goal I set for myself and just can't believe it. I am overjoyed!
A) How long is your common channel? 75cm. Talked with Dr about this one. I decided.
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? My stomach was 4 ounces after surgery.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? as many as I want. I don't watch them anymore.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I am the weird one...I like protein drinks but I use them when I want to be a sugar slut. I like starting most mornings with a shake. One a day....then everything else from meat, nuts, beans.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I am low in B vitamins but am taking more. It is time for bloodwork when I get back in town
I'll answer, but your questions are problematic for me simply because I never set a goal - I had been overweight/obese for so long, that I really didn't know what a good weight for me would be. I'm at 152 and a size 4 now, so for the purposes of your question, I'll declare that goal. Lord knows, I don't want to be any smaller! I've been around here for about 6 months - fluctuating within 5 pounds.
A) How long is your common channel? 100 cm.
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I don't really know, because I don't count grams. I try to avoid eating a lot of the obvious ones like bread, pasta, sweets, etc... but I haven't completely eliminated them, either.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Since about 2 weeks post-op, I've gotten all my protein from real food - meat, cheese, eggs, fish, soy, dairy... I hate protein drinks.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I'm low on potassium, but am taking a supplement to rectify that. I'm also a little low on D, but not deficient, so I'm taking extra. Nothing big or major.
Reached goal before 1 year out. Goal was a normal bmi. I have lost 17 pounds in addition to that and am still losing. I decided I'll just go ahead and lose a total of 200 pounds (14 more pounds).
No problem with any weight gain.
cc is 85
ate real meat
no trouble w/ nutrition or bathroom issues
Height: 5'10 and a 1/2 - -
107% loss.
How many of you reached your goal and are still there?
I reached a normal BMI at eight months out, my goal at 10 months, and am now ten-twelve pounds below goal
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? Since one year out (ten months now)
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 100 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? I think roughly four ounces
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I dunno....I really don't count anymore.....kept it to under 30, under 50, under 100 for the first four months, six months, one year
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? meat, cheese, eggs, nuts
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? My vitamin D is low, but treatable - I am currently taking about 75,000 IU a day. I recently had to have an iron infusion - but to me, it's worth it. No bathroom issues unless I really go overboard on simple sugars. I go about four times a day. Gas is better now, but was bad earlier. Probiotics help a lot!
I never really had a goal, just wanted to be healthy and happy with the way I looked. 6 is my lucky number so decided to get to 66.6kg, I maintained that for about 6 months, but I wasn't happy with the lines on my face and sunken cheeks, a face lift was out of the question. I gained 5 kgs and am happy with my face and have to put up with the extra on my bum. I still wear the same size clothes now as I did at 66.6kg, I refuse to go up a clothes size. It keeps me in check without being a slave to the scales. If my jeans get tight, I cut down on simple carbs for a few days until they fit again.
A) How long is your common channel? No idea
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? No idea
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? Don't count carbs, I eat a balanced diet
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Rarely have protein drink except roadside lemonade in summer blended with lots of ice so it's like a slushi
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I wouldn't class it as trouble my iron and d were borderline low, when last tested so I have started extra supplementation.
I am at Goal.
A) How long is your common channel? 65
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? At maintenance usually over 200. I don't really count. In fact I never cut or watched the carbs, I was lucky that way. However I weigh everyday and if I ever see an upward trend I will cut carbs. YMMV
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I NEVER used the shakes, when I vacation I used a vial of protein or 2, but was able to eat all of my protein very early out. I usually eat every couple of hours.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)?
My only issues have been low D, which is in the low normal range now and anemia, but I was anemic before surgery, that is now in normal range too. I have not had bathroom issues as I have been very proactive in regards of preventing. I was taking a maintenance dose of flagyl, but ran out and started taking probotics from Trader Joes and noticed that they did the work, while I was waiting on my shipment, so I have the flayl if I need it, but right now I am just taking the probotics.
I did not reach the surgeon's goal weight (118lbs), however, the last time I checked, I was at a 15% body fat (normal is 24% to 32%), so I'll answer.
I lost 101lbs in the first year, and I have maintained every bit of THAT loss. I then lost another 18 lbs in the 2nd year, and I have regained most of that. However, my body composition has changed. I have more muscle now than I did at 1 year out. I am doing things like rock climbing, working out, stair climbing etc, so a good deal of that regain is muscle.
My common channel is 65cm, alimentary limb is 185 cm and my biliopancreatic limb is 550cm. This means that my total intestinal length is about 800cm or 26 feet long. Average is 500cm or 15 feet long.
My original stomach size was 4 ounces.
I average about 150g of carbs per day
I eat both food &protein drinks. I have one protein drink a day which is 30g of protein, and the rest is from food. I tend to eat a lot of chicken, fish &seafood (shrimp, crab, etc). I also get a lot of protein from cheese, bacon, and chili. I would eat shrimp almost every day if I could, but I tend to go in phases - I'll get stuck on pork ribs and eat them every chance I get. Then suddenly it's peel &eat shrimp that I can't get enough of.
I have never had perfect labs - but each set of labs indicates that I'm fixing the things I'm aware of, and working on. When I discovered I was low in D, I added D3. Now, my D is in the normal range, but my iron is low. I'm adding iron, and will test again to see what to do next.
As for bathroom issues, what happens in there is nothing like what happened pre-op, but it doesn't bother me. They are softer, a different color, more voluminous, but it's never out of control. I keep Febreeze handy, and my bathroom always smells lovely.
The only issue I am having (and I have to wait four months for an appt to start fixing) is that I started having issues with hypoglycemia in January. I had my insulin response tested by my PCP who suggested I see an endocrinologist. By the time I verified who was in my area &whether they were in my insurance plan, the next available appointments are in July in Bellevue &September in Kirkland. I took both in case I want a second opinion. I'll know more towards the end of the summer. In the meantime, I keep OJ in my trunk and candy handy.
Two years postop. All co-morbidities are resolved. Lost 101lbs in 1 year. High wt: 277 Surgery wt: 260.7 Currently: 153 lbs - BMI 29.9 w/body fat of 14.9%
For how long have you maintained the weight lost?
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel?
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched?
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day?
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks?
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I have. It took me about 15 months. Yes, being I am almost 19 months postop
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? My weight loss was paced and gradually. I didn't lose weight quickly. I can eat more now and even if I eat a lot of carbs which are mostly complex carbs, I haven't gained any weight back. I do gain a bit during my TOM, but it drops back down when I am over that "phase"
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 125 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 3 oz and it hasn't stretch
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? anywhere from minimum of 50g to 150g. I have to eat more than 50g of carbs a day or else suffer massive headaches which is a signal, I need to eat carbs. If I eat food with no carbs or very little carbs, those headaches will occur for me. Once I have something that has some carbs, it disappears in a few minutes.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Both. I will make an effort to eat some sort of meat daily to gt in some protein that is bulk. There are times, I have issues with having no desire to eat or haven't met or know I won't meet my minimum protein quota for the day, so I take a protein drink to help me out.
E) Ar you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)?
nutrition - No, I do not have trouble with my nutrition. I eat daily and make sure it is food with high protein. I eat a lot of ribeye steak and was the first high protein meat I was able to eat at 4 weeks postop with no trouble. Besides, steak has high level of iron and other vitamins and minerals. I basically eat ground beef, steak, chicken, shrimps, crab, lobster. I usually eat grilled salmon for breakfast. Nothing has been off limits to me with the exception of carbonated drinks. It still hurt my tummy, even if flat.
There are days I do have issues with having no desire to eat at all. When that happens, I make the effort to hit the protein drinks to help me out. I make sure, I am well hydrated by drink a lot of milk, Koolaid with Splenda or Tang. I like to drink water during the days that the weather is warm or hot, not during the winter or when it is cold. I do eat food focusing on protein first.
I am trying to get more fat into my diet, but it is difficult for me. I am able to tolerate it, just not used to eating fat since I lived a life that was basically low fat for many years. I am now enjoying eating more fried food with my mind getting conditioned that it is ok and even having an ice cream that is high fat. I have eaten fried and fatty food and haven't gained any weight. For over 18 months, my fat intake has been less than 50g daily which is very low and actually comes out to about 10g fat daily with malabsorption. I am working to get in more fat. It is just difficult at times to try to adjusting myself that it is ok and I can eat more fatty food. I still can't eat much at the postop phase I am at. I have to share food off my hubby's plate when I go out and at home, I eat about a palm worth size and amount of food for 1 meal.
Vitamins - there are days, I do forget to take all my required Calcium Citrate which is 2100-2400gms daily. I do take all my Centrum Performance without missing it. I change from chewable to pills to liquid every once and awhile, since this is for life. Every single bloodwork until this day that I had done have been within range with no deficiencies.
anemia - I do not have anemia or shown any signs of iron deficiencies through my bloodwork
bathroom issues - I do not have bathroom issues at all. I go almost every single day and it is usually once in the early morning. Very rare if I go twice a day. I have not had any diarrhea since having my surgery, after 2 weeks postop. I did have constipation problem awhile back. But, it sorted out, once I took Miralax. Otherwise, no gas or bowel trouble.

My common channel is 150 and my stomach volume started at 100ml. I have lost all of the weight I needed to lose and right now I am about three pounds below goal. I do not track my carbs. I eat meat and fish and do not do protein shakes. So far no nutrition issues and no bathroom issues.

How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I reached my personal goal of 145 pounds at 8 months post op. I'm actually down to 132 pounds, 13 pounds below goal

If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 70 cc
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 80-90 cc's/ 3 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I haven't been counting lately, but well over 300 b/c I have added juices and sugar drinks to slow my weight loss
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Mostly real meat, but I like boosting my daily intake with a protein drink
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? No problems with nutrition, vits, or anemia. I probably do go to the bathroom more than some DSers. As a pre-op, I went to the bathroom after every big meal. I do the same as a post op some days...but actually do that less often as a post op then I did as a pre-op. TYPICALLY, I start my day with 2-3 different poos early in the morning, and will sometimes have one late in the evening. However, there are times I can go once at breakfast, once at lunch, and once at dinner. It's just the way that I was born. My Mom's side of the family is all this way, get togethers are funny because 30 minutes after we it, it's time for all of us to go! Lol! I don't think that I go more "often" as a post op than I did as a pre-op, I just think my bathroom business is more productive now because I never battle with constipation like I did as a pre-op.

I am at goal and I am 4 1/2 years out.
My CC is 65 cm, my surgeon used the Hess method
I started out with a 3-4 oz stomach
I use the all-or-nothing maintenance plan
Haven't had a protein shake or a bar since 3 months post-op. I do have eggs for breakfast
practically every single day, though.
Bathroom issues are predictable and controllable. I am having a great deal of difficulty with my Vitamin D level, however. I am now up to 200K of D daily plus what is in my MV and my calcium supplement, plus I am tanning. I have a D level pending now. I've never had any anemia and never took any extra iron.

How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I reached goal at around 8 months post-op. I lost 100# in 6 months. Then, 20# more over the next 2.
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I've maintained for almost 3 years. I'm 3 yrs 9 months post-op.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 75
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 2-3 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I try to stay below 100, but sometimes I'll hit 200 if I'm doing sweet stuff--which, BTW, has very little attraction for me now.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I definitely eat real meat, and lots of it. However, I'll also have a protein drink from time to time if I feel like I'm not getting in enough protein that day. Some days, I just can't seem to eat very much in the morning and afternoon, just don't have an appetite, so that's when I'll drink my IDS Belgian Chocolate (mixed w/coffee plus half n half), or Syntrax Roadside Lemonade (mixed w/CrystalLight Lemonade)
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I've had low-normal iron; high-low zinc, and high-low D3. I add extra supplements to cover these.
I've never had any bathroom issues. I'm regular, I go once or twice in the morning and that's usually it. Once in a great while, I'll go again in the afternoon if I really ate a lot the day and night before.

I lost almost all of my weight by 18 months, I am higher than my ridiculous low weight(after 2 major plastic surgeries and no exercise for 6 months) and have put back on muscle weight and even some needed padding fat to smooth out the face, arms and legs. I look good, feel terrific so I am at my goal weight!!!!! 6 1/2 years out and would not change a thing.
A) How long is your common channel? Hess method, percentage of total small intestine length measured by surgeon during open DS
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 3 oz, no idea now have not needed an UGI to check
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? as many as I want and can hold
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? have a protein bar twice a day to supplement the meat I eat first at lunch and dinner
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? have had iron deficiency while still menstruating, after early menopause no iron deficiency, B12 was on the low side so I do shots once a month. I have bathroom issues only if I ingest large amounts of movie popcorn drenched in butter and if I eat any amount of dairy. I am milk protein and lactose intolerant-not a great combo to have, this was present before surgery. It seems to be worse now only because I eat less at anyone time making the percentage of dairy higher as a total now, before the alfredo pasta was part of the meal but I ate the salad or soup, breadsticks the grilled chicken and probably would of had a dessert as well, all with 2 or more 8-10oz of fluid---so my gut got less milk protein per volumne of meal. Now I have the grilled chicken and maybe a 1/2 cup of pasta, sip some water have maybe 1/2 a breadstick and am way to full to eat dessert. highest >350/342 start of wls journey/ 186 @6years

C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I never really count carbs, just protein. I take the bread off my burgers, but I eat tortillas and high fiber bread pretty often, But I love my candy and chocolate! I don't care for cakes, pies and cookies, but I LOVE candy!
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I EAT MEAT!!! and lots of it every day! I love meat and can eat any kind with NO trouble at all. Red meat being my favorite. Recently I started adding in a protein shake a day becasue I'm having some major plastic surgery soon and I want to be ready. But that's new. I never had the shakes. I did take the protein vials for the first month.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I'm normal low on my iron. I'm having my non-hormone IUD removed and replaced next month with one WITH hormones to reduce my periods which are now really heavy and long. I'm sure that will help my slight anemia. I usually poop once or twice in the morning, but a lot! Sometimes also at night if I REALLY eat a lot of salad or super carby food, but that's not usual. I'm very regular. 340/182/175 ~ 5'10" I lost 158 lbs!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll answer your questions because I'll get to goal, I just know it
A) 90 cm
B) 3 oz
C) anywhere from 50-100 most days on the lower end
D) meat, meat, meat
E) nutrition - I eat great
vitamins - nope I get all those in too
anemia - preop my levels were high normal and I eat alot of red meat hoping that will keep me in the black
bathroom issues - none, no stink, no dhr, no gas
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't know if this will be helpful or not. In December, I will be 8 years post-op. This is what happened to me on my journey thus far.
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? I lost a total of 170 lbs, never really had a goal weight in mind (my lowest weight was 240). Now I think I would like to get to 190-200. I am currently 291.
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I maintained the 240 for years and went on to have a breast lift and reduction, arm surgery, tummy tuck and hip tuck in two different operations. After the second surgery I became anemic (my labs previous to surgery were good). It took six months to get my iron back on track and during that time I went from working out 5-6 times per week with cardio and weight training to doing nothing but going to work and sleeping. It got so bad that I actually fell asleep at my desk a couple times and that was really unusual for me, I was high energy before. I gained 30 lbs during this six months and also turned to comfort/quick foods while I wasn't feeling well. Once that was over and fixed, I was at 270. I maintained 270 for years and got back into working out 5-6 times per week, but my diet never really improved much. I still maintained until I recently fell down some icy stairs and shattered my right arm from shoulder to elbow. That resulted in my being completely immobile for four months and eating comfort foods, which included tons of carbs and sugar. I am six months out from my injury, still in physical therapy, but limited with exercise and now weigh 291. So, I gained 20 during this episode. Sorry for rambling! My eating is the key, it got bad and stayed bad, but the lack of exercise during these periods didn't help. If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 75 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? No idea, my doctor called it a skinny banana.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? Just started back to 50-70 per day. Prior to that I was probably consuming 100's per day easily! Not to mention tons of sugar!!
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Never did protein drinks, I eat all meats.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I did get a bad cause of anemia, but doctors attributed it to blood loss during plastic surgeries I explained above. My labs prior too were fine. Aside from that, I did have a flair up of IBS at one point, but it was an extremly stressful time in my life and once the external issues resolved themselves, I was fine. As far as bathroom behavior is concerned, I go once or twice in the morning and occasionally in the afternoon as well. Very manageable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I reached goal in 11 monthes but continued to lose weight during my second year. I am currently 129 and should be weighing 145. I eat like a fool to try to keep weight on.
A) How long is your common channel? My CC is 100 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? Was told it is 6-8 oz once it was healed.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I have never counted carbs. I figured that if I wasn't happy with my weightloss I would begin counting. I was never unhappy so I haven't counted them to this day.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I have had 1/2 a protein drink in the 2 years I have been post op. It gave me gas and bloating. I get my protein from meats and cheeses mostly.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I just got over C Diff and I feel that has been a culprit in some of my bowel issues for a while. My normal is maybe 4x a day. 3 in the am and one late afternoon.
I do take some supplements... ADEK 3 per day 2 Potassium per day 3 Calcium Citrate 600mg per day. That's pretty much it. I do take flaxseed oil for dry skin and acidophilus as a probiotic. Those are my choice. If I had to complain about anything it would be the need to eat a lot of food. (is that really a complaint?) I need to conciously make myself eat
fattening food. 13 pounds below goal!!! That puts me in the red at 132 pounds!
How many of you reached your goal and are still there? ME
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? Surgery 11/14/06, reached goal in late july, continued to lose a few pounds until mid-august... have been maintaining +/- 5 lbs ever since.
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 125cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? I don't know the exact volume... but it was created with a 38-Fr bougie... which I suspect made me somewhere around 3-5 oz.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? To be honest, I don't "count" carbs... though I try to stay clear or minimize the OBVIOUS carb-monsters... like pasta, I only eat as a small side dish now, not as a main course like I sometimes used to.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? primarily meat, cheese and eggs are my protein sources... though there's one drink I love, I use it more as a "snack" or treat... Bolthouse Farms "Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino"... but I don't NEED it for protein.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? Nothing that's "not resolved"... my D was a little low, but it's starting to come up, and I'll be testing again at my next Dr appt at the beginning of July... I've since started 100k vit D, and expect I'll soon be cutting back to 50k
I am below goal. grazing often. CC: 100 stomach size: 1 1/2 oz. Never could handle protein drinks. I'm a carnivore. Limited carbs till goal weight. Never counted I really like sugar now. No problems w/ malnutrition, bowels &gas I can't handle. Down 165 lbs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My surgeon's goal is a "normal BMI". I'm 4 months out from my DS and will reach a normal BMI in 13 more pounds lost. My personal goal is another 33lbs. While I'm not totally confident of my own personal goal, I'm confident that I will reach my surgeon's goal in the next couple of months based on the fact that as a lightweight, I'm supposedly destined to lose slower (but didn't) and my loss has been very steady. While I can't claim "GOAL" yet, I'm confident that I will reach it.
To answer your other questions (if relevant)
a. 100
b. 8oz (this is what he said it would be after I healed...I assume that this means "long term" and not right after surgery)
c. 50-100g
d. I eat meat and suppliment when necessary. I at times get sick of the protein drinks and will push more "food protein" when I don't have a taste for them. But, it's not necessarily meat...sometimes it's dairy.
e. I poop once every 2-3 days. Never had any issues. My 3 month labs were excellent. Yes, I'm early out but I'm committed to regular follow and a strict vitamin regime.

Surgery 10/21/05. At goal of 141-144, for over a year now. Got too skinny (low 120s), but ate my way back up.
150 common channel, 3-4 oz stomach
I ate very low carb the first 6 months. Now I just had pasta for dinner! I poop 2 times per day and have very little gas.
I always have a protein shake in the morning with a banana. It's my protein on the go and I like them. I do eat lots of real meat.
As an experiment, my surgeon had me try the new Optisource vitamins that you take only 2 times per day, and the calcium and iron is taken together. YIKES! I went from perfect labs to having anemia, low D, and low calcium. I'm still playing catch up.

My goal was 150 ... I never officially (on my doc's scale) reached UNDER 158 . On my scale I was as low as 153 for a brief second in time... So close yet so far away!
Now I sit at 155-160lbs which technically (if you use 5'6" as my height - as I am between 5'6" and 5'7") I am overweight on the BMI scale !
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? I have been maintaining this weight for a little less than 2 years. ( I am over 3 years out of surgery)
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 100cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? At first? Under 30 grams for 18 months. For the last year? Probably 150-200. Now ? I am trying to stay between 50-75 'cause I want to lose 10lbs and get to my goal !!
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Haven't routinely used protein drinks since about 10 months out... I eat meat... chicken, steak, bacon, pork chops, fish, cheese, beans, etc and lots of it!
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? No issues... I have tweaked my vits on occasion. I was low on zinc and copper but it was caught pretty fast.... My B vitamins are off the chart high..... My poop issues early after surgery all centered around eating carbs... if I'd eat some donuts I'd poop... loose stools within an hour or two after eating the carbs. Now I can eat 3 donuts and barely suffer a little gas.... it takes donuts, chips, pizza, bread, fried foods all in a few hours time (and boy can I pack in the food!) to give me diahrea...and even then it's very controlled.

If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight: I surpassed any goal I set for myself and just can't believe it. I am overjoyed!
A) How long is your common channel? 75cm. Talked with Dr about this one. I decided.
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? My stomach was 4 ounces after surgery.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? as many as I want. I don't watch them anymore.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I am the weird one...I like protein drinks but I use them when I want to be a sugar slut. I like starting most mornings with a shake. One a day....then everything else from meat, nuts, beans.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I am low in B vitamins but am taking more. It is time for bloodwork when I get back in town

I'll answer, but your questions are problematic for me simply because I never set a goal - I had been overweight/obese for so long, that I really didn't know what a good weight for me would be. I'm at 152 and a size 4 now, so for the purposes of your question, I'll declare that goal. Lord knows, I don't want to be any smaller! I've been around here for about 6 months - fluctuating within 5 pounds.
A) How long is your common channel? 100 cm.
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I don't really know, because I don't count grams. I try to avoid eating a lot of the obvious ones like bread, pasta, sweets, etc... but I haven't completely eliminated them, either.
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Since about 2 weeks post-op, I've gotten all my protein from real food - meat, cheese, eggs, fish, soy, dairy... I hate protein drinks.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I'm low on potassium, but am taking a supplement to rectify that. I'm also a little low on D, but not deficient, so I'm taking extra. Nothing big or major.

Reached goal before 1 year out. Goal was a normal bmi. I have lost 17 pounds in addition to that and am still losing. I decided I'll just go ahead and lose a total of 200 pounds (14 more pounds).

How many of you reached your goal and are still there?
I reached a normal BMI at eight months out, my goal at 10 months, and am now ten-twelve pounds below goal
For how long have you maintained the weight lost? Since one year out (ten months now)
If you reached your goal and are still at your goal weight:
A) How long is your common channel? 100 cm
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? I think roughly four ounces
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? I dunno....I really don't count anymore.....kept it to under 30, under 50, under 100 for the first four months, six months, one year
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? meat, cheese, eggs, nuts
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? My vitamin D is low, but treatable - I am currently taking about 75,000 IU a day. I recently had to have an iron infusion - but to me, it's worth it. No bathroom issues unless I really go overboard on simple sugars. I go about four times a day. Gas is better now, but was bad earlier. Probiotics help a lot!

I never really had a goal, just wanted to be healthy and happy with the way I looked. 6 is my lucky number so decided to get to 66.6kg, I maintained that for about 6 months, but I wasn't happy with the lines on my face and sunken cheeks, a face lift was out of the question. I gained 5 kgs and am happy with my face and have to put up with the extra on my bum. I still wear the same size clothes now as I did at 66.6kg, I refuse to go up a clothes size. It keeps me in check without being a slave to the scales. If my jeans get tight, I cut down on simple carbs for a few days until they fit again.
A) How long is your common channel? No idea
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? No idea
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? Don't count carbs, I eat a balanced diet
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? Rarely have protein drink except roadside lemonade in summer blended with lots of ice so it's like a slushi
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)? I wouldn't class it as trouble my iron and d were borderline low, when last tested so I have started extra supplementation.

I am at Goal.
A) How long is your common channel? 65
B) What size was your stomach at time of surgery, before it stretched? 4 oz.
C) How many carbohydrates do you eat in a day? At maintenance usually over 200. I don't really count. In fact I never cut or watched the carbs, I was lucky that way. However I weigh everyday and if I ever see an upward trend I will cut carbs. YMMV
D) Do you eat real meat only or mostly protein drinks? I NEVER used the shakes, when I vacation I used a vial of protein or 2, but was able to eat all of my protein very early out. I usually eat every couple of hours.
E) Are you having trouble with nutrition, vitamins, anemia, or bathroom issues on a regular bases, (not resolved)?
My only issues have been low D, which is in the low normal range now and anemia, but I was anemic before surgery, that is now in normal range too. I have not had bathroom issues as I have been very proactive in regards of preventing. I was taking a maintenance dose of flagyl, but ran out and started taking probotics from Trader Joes and noticed that they did the work, while I was waiting on my shipment, so I have the flayl if I need it, but right now I am just taking the probotics.

I hate protein drinks, never could drink them. I get my protein from food.
No problems other than my D was on the low side.

I got to goal and actually had to go on enzymes for 6 months to keep weight on. I have an extra 5 pounds that I want to lose now but I really love food so I don't always take it as seriously as I should.

I did not reach the surgeon's goal weight (118lbs), however, the last time I checked, I was at a 15% body fat (normal is 24% to 32%), so I'll answer.
I lost 101lbs in the first year, and I have maintained every bit of THAT loss. I then lost another 18 lbs in the 2nd year, and I have regained most of that. However, my body composition has changed. I have more muscle now than I did at 1 year out. I am doing things like rock climbing, working out, stair climbing etc, so a good deal of that regain is muscle.
My common channel is 65cm, alimentary limb is 185 cm and my biliopancreatic limb is 550cm. This means that my total intestinal length is about 800cm or 26 feet long. Average is 500cm or 15 feet long.
My original stomach size was 4 ounces.
I average about 150g of carbs per day
I eat both food &protein drinks. I have one protein drink a day which is 30g of protein, and the rest is from food. I tend to eat a lot of chicken, fish &seafood (shrimp, crab, etc). I also get a lot of protein from cheese, bacon, and chili. I would eat shrimp almost every day if I could, but I tend to go in phases - I'll get stuck on pork ribs and eat them every chance I get. Then suddenly it's peel &eat shrimp that I can't get enough of.
I have never had perfect labs - but each set of labs indicates that I'm fixing the things I'm aware of, and working on. When I discovered I was low in D, I added D3. Now, my D is in the normal range, but my iron is low. I'm adding iron, and will test again to see what to do next.
As for bathroom issues, what happens in there is nothing like what happened pre-op, but it doesn't bother me. They are softer, a different color, more voluminous, but it's never out of control. I keep Febreeze handy, and my bathroom always smells lovely.
The only issue I am having (and I have to wait four months for an appt to start fixing) is that I started having issues with hypoglycemia in January. I had my insulin response tested by my PCP who suggested I see an endocrinologist. By the time I verified who was in my area &whether they were in my insurance plan, the next available appointments are in July in Bellevue &September in Kirkland. I took both in case I want a second opinion. I'll know more towards the end of the summer. In the meantime, I keep OJ in my trunk and candy handy.
Two years postop. All co-morbidities are resolved. Lost 101lbs in 1 year. High wt: 277 Surgery wt: 260.7 Currently: 153 lbs - BMI 29.9 w/body fat of 14.9%

I wanted to share with you guys some THING that just happened to me. I get on my Gazelle every morning (it's a glider like cross country skiing) and go 1 & 1/2 miles and I try to go a mile every evening.
Well, this morning I was determined to see that little 2 mile mark come up! I huffed and I puffed and the closer I got to the 2 mile mark and the harder I breathed I noticed this strange thing happening. This STUFF started popping out all over my face and then my arms!!!
It was sweat!!! I have not had this happen since my surgery!! I was excited to see my metabolism get this kick!! It has been so long in coming. Just had to share with you guys. Hope you all have a GOOD day. I'm off to the shower!

This is a WOW!!!
Mar 29, 2008
This is a WOW!!! I have been swimming in my clothes lately and my hubby finally said to go buy some clothes or do something! Lol. I still have 50 pounds to lose so, I really want to wait a little longer to buy things. I sew most of my blouses and dresses so, I thought I would just take up what I could and deal with what I have.
I put on a pair of pants and just measured how much to take them up by pulling them from the side and using my fingers as a guide. I sewed them and turned them right side out and held them up to take a look at my handiwork and just froze! I could not believe I had measured and just sewn these pants all wrong! I took off 9 inches of material and no way were these little pants going to fit my big fanny!!! I was so upset, I threw them is a pile in the corner to give away to someone. Then I picked up another pair of pants to fix and thought I better see how much the first pair was off, so I wouldn't mess up the others. I tried on the first pair thinking I would never get them over my big tush, but, I could guess how much to not take in on the others.
Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather when the pants just slipped right on!!! I could have even taken them in a little more! My eyes just don't understand what is going on. Lol. They think I am still the size I have been for years and they don't get the new size I am now. What a shock ... but, a good one! *Lol*

Streaking through the house
Mar 28, 2008
Streaking through the house, my dogs running after me barking, my wrinkles and extra skin FLAPPING in the breeze and me yelling, "I WEIGH 201 POUNDS AND MY HAIR HAS STOPPED FALLING OUT, YIPPEE!" LOL!!! A frightening sight to behold, I know, but, it just felt GOOD to be alive!!! My hubby thought I had lost my mind! LOL!

Well, I went in for my 6 month blood work today. Two nurses tried to get all the blood they needed for all the tests and had to stick me 5 times! I had a really good vein on my left arm that everyone got blood from with no problem. No more! I guess at some point with the surgery and the pre surgery tests, the vein got so much scarring that now it is useless. And my other ones are so small they can only take a little blood, then it collapses.
And on top of all the poking, I am in northeastern Oregon now, not CA, were my Kaiser insurance is, so, I had to pay for the blood work my self. As I was walking out I thought I would find out what the bill would be when they get the testing done, so I asked ... I thought she was kidding me!!! I went into shock at 5 hundred and ??.?? I think she said $534.75, but, I don't know for sure. I don't remember going to my car. I called my hubby on my cell phone and just exploded into tears. We are on a small fixed income and this is not something I had planned for. The first blood test at 3 months cost me $125.00. And that was cheeper for me than going to CA to have it done at Kaiser for free.
He is the sweetest man in the world. He calmly talked to me and told me not to worry because the Lord already took care of it. ( the governments stimulus payment we are getting is going to be $600.00 I think.)
It just bothers me to be the one that has to have the money for something that seams so useless! I know I need to do the tests to make sure all is right. But, I would just like to have my head above the water line for a little while before I have to start kicking my feet to get a breath!!! Know what I mean? Lol. Oh well, I don't really need clothes that fit! Lol. I think maybe I can take up my underwear again. *Lol.*
I got the bill and it was $750.00!!! They let me make payments!
