When I look at myself now it's hard to believe I was a 6'1" 135 lbs in my late teen years, of course, at that I still thought I was big, and controlled my weight by not eating.  I then married a man whose family has always had issues with food, and over time the weight just added on, by the time I was 30 after quitting smoking I'd somehow ballooned to 230 lbs, then over the next ten year it just kept creeping up till I topped out around 285 at 40.

I then found myself inexpicably losing about 20-25 pounds without any effort on my part, with a strong family history of diabetes, I had it checked out and yep I had full blown diabetes, back in those days there was very little talk about pre-diabetes and trying to treat, but I don't know if I would have been able to make significant changes to make enough of a difference.

I then made some significant effort and managed to get my weight down to around 235 but it made no difference to my diabetes, I was now taking 2 medications for this and my blood sugar was well controlled.

But then the pounds crept back, I starting having heart problems which made exercise difficult, but still managed to get out walking every day, but as I've gotten older I keep adding new health issues, Ashthma, Arthritis, High Blood Pressure, Sleep Apnea, and finally after being able to keep my diabetes well controlled for 15 years I could no longer do it and started on Insulin, initially tried Vicotza and Basal insulin but a year and a half ago I started with mealtime insulin too, I finally decided it was time.

I haven't been able to lose weight and keep it off on my own, and although I barely meet the guidelines for weight, I've got every other health indication so am going the surgery route.

I think the one advantage of it taking so long to get final approval and surgery is you've had lots of time to back out and second guess your decision, but I'm just hoping to get healthier, and losing weight would be nice too.
