Hi everyone!!! I'm back. What they say is true...the first week is the hardest part. I had my surgery Thursday 5/16/02 at 7am. I was in the hospital until Sunday 5/19/02, and have been home recovering this week. The hospital stay had wasn't too bad. The problems I dealt with were headaches, which we figured out were from the morphene...and they would give me a different pain killer and muscle relaxer which helped with the headaches. Please take note of other folks comments...at the hospital you will need to rely on yourself, the nurses do not help you a whole lot. They don't make you walk, which you need to. You will need a support person there some of the time to help you and make you do things to keep you from getting pnemonia. They'll got through that in the pre-op class you go to. The more I walked the easier it was the next time. I sat up in the chair the first night, because they told me it would make it easier when they take you to radiology the next morning to check for leaks. Even though it hurts, it will make it easier if you make yourself do it. By the way, my xray in radiology showed that I had no leaks...which meant they would take out the tube in my nose down to my stomach. And I could start eating ice chips!!!! I'm telling you, once this tube comes out and you can eat ice chips, life is wonderful! It was hard to go all of Thursday without any drink, any ice, especially with the tube down my throat. It hurt especially that night. When I got up to walk the next day Friday, I kept having a sharp charlie-horse type pain in my left side and I couldn't understand why. On Saturday, they took out these two drains on that side and as soon as they did, I felt like a new person. It was the drain that was hurting me. I got to take a shower, and it was soooo nice. They said I was up quicker than most, but I've been determined. I want to thanks the three post-op support group members that came and visited me in the hospital...that was a blessing. If they ask if you want them to visit, LET THEM!!! They were so helpful and inspiring at a time when you need it most! Thanks to Dana Day, Lori Mathis, and I'm sorry but I can't remember the other girl's name...I was too groggy...but I still appreciated her coming. She didn't leave her name and stuff, so I didn't get to keep it. The others did though. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! After coming home I've had a few ups and downs. All I can say is you have to give it time, to work everything out in your system...everything has to learn to work together again. They gave me percacet to take home. And I took 2 every four hours on sunday and monday and it pretty much knocked me out. On Tuesday, I tried to cut it to one every four hours, and when I did, I had the most hellatious nightmares...and would wake up almost in tears, shaking, etc. My back had also started hurting. I called one of the post-op girls (DANA DAY) that had visited me in the hospital, and she said hers hurt too...and to call the Dr. and get muscle relaxers. I called Dr. Bosquez's office and Michelle said she also had nightmares and sleep walking with the percacet. She called me in a different non-hallucagenic pain medicine (not everyone reacts to the peracet the way we did). She also called in a muscle relaxer to help my back. She said to use a heating pad on the place when I took the mucsle relaxer...and I'm telling you I've been a different person ever since then. Now things are better every day. It took my bowels a while to get back to working right....and you have a lot of gas, from the air that gets in your stomach during the surgery...so once that all takes care of itself, your stomach starts feeling halfway normal again. I actually went to work after five today and worked for 2 hours. Earlier in the day, I ran a few errands and came home and rested for about an hour before going to work. I can tell work will be hard. After two hours, I was exhausted. I just sat at the desk, which wasn't bad, but once I got up walking I was ready to fall down. It made my back hurt. Just a little at a time is how it is going to go. But I can tell now that it will get better every day. I weighed yesterday...six days after surgery, and I had lost 5 lbs!!! FIVE POUNDS GONE FOREVER...I'll NEVER SEE THAT NUMBER ON MY SCALE AGAIN!! What a feeling! Well that's the scoop. I've made it over the mountain. I'll keep updating as I go. Thanks to everyone who sent me their well wishes. It really is encouraging to hear right before the surgery. Talk to you again soon! --Holly M.
