Wow Debbie.....17 units of blood pre-pop? I'm curious as to why so much blood. The reason I'm curious is because when I first was being tested for the WLS, my blood was so low that the Dr put me on prescription iron pills that would absorb better. I believe my problem for anemia is because I have extremely heavy periods. Years ago my GYN put me on birth control and it helped tremendously, but after getting so heavy and having too many side effects of obesity, I was told to stop taking them. I hope since I have been taking them since June, that I wont have problems with them giving me the surgery. I would like to hear about what you went through. Congratulations on your surgery.....God Bless, Marilynn

Hi Debbie :) Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time getting your iron in! I get all my vitamins through Bariatric Advantage (.com). Every one of their vitamins is chelated (making it more digestible and better absorbed for us post-ops), are easy to get and keep down and taste awesome (although they taste better sucked on than chewed). Their chewable iron can be either chewed, sucked, or swallowed (and are easy to swallow as they are tiny). Their chewable iron also has Vit C which helps with absorption.

You will want to ask your surgeon how much iron you need with the BA iron as thiers is more "potent" as it is iron citrate and not the standard iron found in most pills/caplets. To give you an example, early out my surgeon prescribed Trinsicon (which along with B12 and intrinsic factor had 415 mg of iron in it), and since now recommending the Bariatric Advantage vitamins, he only recommends 18 mg of the BA iron. When I asked why the huge difference, he said it was because the BA iron is MUCH more readily absorbed.

Hope this helps!!!

Best wishes to you for an uneventful surgery and a recovery thats as quick and painfree as possible. This quote is from a book my grandmother gave me before she passed away. It was one of her favorites.(Kahlil Gibran) "But if in your thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons, and let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing"
