Two Months Out!

May 08, 2008

Okay, so yesterday was 2 months out.  What a significant improvement I've seen in myself over the last two weeks as it relates to being able to eat, controlling nausea and just generally feeling better!

I've become much more compliant with my vitamins now that I can take two swallows of water at a time (never figured that that small feat would feel like such an accomplishment!)

I'm down 57 lbs, 2 pants sizes, 3 blazer sizes and a shoe size.

Eating is getting easier although I do still have some episodes now and then where I don't take as much time to eat as I should and I suffer for it.  I just get tired of eating cold food!

All in all, I feel like I've turned the corner and things are definitely getting better!

Finally have some time to add another update  :)

Well, I don't really like thinking much about the first 3 weeks post surgery because those were some DARK DARK days for me.  I was truly wondering what the hell I had done!

Surgery went without complications and my time in the hospital was okay (don't really care for hospitals).  Was experiencing quite a bit of nausea but was getting some sort of quick acting anti-nausea medication through one of my "ports"  hahaha

While in the hospital I also started developing an acute sensitivity to scents.  I had to actually have all of the beautiful flowers that people had sent me re-distributed to other patients or given to the staff because I could not stand the scent.  It seemed like I could smell everything!!  The soap people washed with, what people had eaten for lunch etc.  BLECH!!

Once released from the hospital, I had to keep my eyes closed the entire way home in the car because just the motion of things whizzing by the car was making me nauseous.

First three weeks were VERY tough with liquids and foods.  Had very bad nausea was experiencing these weird "air back ups" every time I would try to drink liquid.  Eating was unpleasant and so was drinking.

I was scheduled to return to work at about the 4 week mark and during week 3, I just knew that there was NO WAY.  So I added another week to my time off.  Somewhere about week 3.5, drinking got easier and eating got a bit easier as well.  It seemed like it happened almost overnight.

When I met with the my Dr. during my 4 week check-up, I explained that I'd like a STRONGER anti-nausea medicine because I was still experiencing such bad nausea.  Well, apparently the stuff I had was VERY strong and what was happenening is that my "hunger" signal was coming into my body as a "nausea" signal.  So when I was feeling nauseous (and not interested in eating) is when I needed to eat most.  Weird!

If I ignore my "nausea" feeling, I start getting the dry heaves... which are not pretty  :)

So, I've come a long long way in the last 5 weeks....  still not enjoying food all that much and certainly am experiencing frustration with how OFTEN I have to eat (it's kind of a pain in the ass!) but all in all... I'm glad to be where I am now rather than 2 short weeks ago!

Still need to really increase the fluids and I know I am deficient in protein because I just cannot do the protein bullets or shakes.  So when I eat, I make sure that what I am eating is protein.  Very limited carbs and no sugar being added to my diet right now.

So that's where I am today!

Hi there!

Okay, so it's obvious that I haven't been the best at documenting my weight loss journey!

Part of the reason is because process has happened SO FAST!!  My papers were submitted to OHIP mid January, I received a request for more info about a week later.  I was approved on February 6th and met with Dr. L for a consultation on February 8th and had surgery scheduled for March 12!  It's been a whirlwind, I'm tellin' ya!

So, here it is 6 days from surgery!

I'm swamped at work trying to cover all of my bases during my absence and actually that may be helping keep my stress level down about the surgery itself.  A person has only SO MANY stress molecules and mine are currently being consumed by work!    But maybe that's not a bad thing.

I have my pre-op meeting with Dr. L tomorrow.  I think I'll have a much better idea of what to expect then.
