I Don't Mean To Get Off On A Rant Here...

Sometimes I wonder what freaking planet I'm on.

It isn't my genes.  I didn't have an unhappy childhood and even if I had, what's the statute of limitations on that? Can I blame my taxes on that too or something? The next miracle pill isn't going to make me lose the weight.  I'm not going to spend more time fighting insurance companies or flying to Mexico to get WLS when I can better spend the time losing weight.
I'm not gonna reward myself for doing something I should be doing anyway.

I went to a local weight loss center meeting a couple weeks ago and someone actually said the doctors had told patients not to lose too much weight prior to surgery.

Off Track and Back

Aug 01, 2007

If you take a look at the weight log I am maintaining below, I stopped exercising and staying on my food plan for almost two months.  At the end of July I recognized I was going down the same old path and wrenched myself back on track.  On July 25th, I went ahead and got on the scales to see the damage and was disappointed to see I was up 28 pounds from my previous weigh in.  Thats a lot of weight to gain in 2 months.  Nevertheless I tried not to get discouraged.  Last week was a very good week food and exercise wise and I was looking forward to my weigh in this morning, expecting a number around 7 pounds down.  Instead, the scale read 419, for a 33 pound loss in one week.  I generally trust the scale, I weigh on a scale at a local weight loss center that I know is calibrated regularly.  The only explanation I'm left with is for some reason I was retaining a lot of fluid.  I know, for example, that my legs swell quite a bit when I am off plan.

I'm positive the loss is mostly water and the number is pleasing despite the questions it raises.  I'm not as far off track as I thought I was and now I appear to be headed in the right direction.

What I Do

May 16, 2007

A couple of people have asked what I'm doing to lose weight so here is a breakdown.

Each day I ride my recumbent cycle for an hour, 30 minutes before and after work.  It wasn't always 30 minutes, I definitely had to build up.  I started out riding two ten minute sessions at the lowest level of resistance, now its 30 minutes at the highest resistance and I am considering increasing the time.  I walk every day and recently made it 1.2 miles without resting.  It takes me about 30 minutes to walk that 1.2 miles.  On alternate days, I'll walk about 20 minutes instead.  I do my cycling and walking every day and I do not like missing a day because missing any of those sessions tends to knock me off track; I use it as an excuse to skip another and another, etc.

I eat three times a day and periodically eat a snack in the afternoon or late evening.  I try not to eat my dinner later than 7pm.  I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.  I drink water and tea almost exclusively, but I buy and drink one two liter of diet ginger ale each week.  I drink about 96 oz of water during the day on weekdays.  I try not to exceed 1500 calories a day and I typically do not exceed 1400.  My calories for the last week, for example, were 1233, 1373, 1143, 1423, 1150, 1220, and 1343.  Surprisingly I do not get very hungry.  An example of what I eat on a daily basis: for breakfast, two poached eggs, an English muffin, and either a package of instant grits or 1/4 of a cantaloupe.  For lunch I almost always eat a sandwich with wheat bread, a slice of turkey, a slice of cheese, lettuce and mustard.  I always eat a fruit for lunch, usually an orange or a plum, and sometimes I add some cucumber salad that's really good and only about 85 calories.  The centerpiece of my dinners is a really big salad with iceberg and romaine lettuce, a tomato, a carrot, and 1/3 of a cucumber.  I also throw on a number of other toppings, varying from night to night, including avocado, feta cheese, raisins, walnuts, etc.  I usually use italian dressing and the total calories for my salads usually runs about 300-330 calories.  Lately I've also been having a can of Progresso soup for dinner, I really like their Lentil and Chicken Noodle.  At other times for dinner I'll have a couple red potatoes, or some steamed broccoli, and rarely I'll have a half a breast of oven baked chicken from a recipe my family has been eating for years.  Somewhat unintentionally I've nearly removed meat from my diet eating only that slice of turkey on my sandwiches each day.  That's not because I don't like meat, I just find I don't crave it much anymore.

I log my exercise and what I eat every day.

I'm not doing anything really special as you can see.  I think the success I'm having recently is due mainly to the large amount of weight I have to lose and the fact that my BMR is working in my favor right now.
