Hi Before my gastric sleeve I would binge drink - but could go weeks or months without drinking- I never regarded it as a problem I am 12 years post sleeve - got to my goal weight a year after surgery and suddenly felt “ pretty” or attractive for the first time in my life I then wanted to go out all the time and would drink It’s shocking how quickly I became alcoholic- the biggest shock of my life that I never ever expected Definitely malnutrition was a factor but I did not realise that at the time I just could not stop drinking-=day and night for 4 years - constant It was a lonely scary sad existence I went to rehab and now at AA daily for the past 18 months - but I urge anyone out there to be aware of this very real outcome after surgery ( I remember reading one post about a woman who became alcoholic after surgery but I instantly thought at the time of reading it “ ah well I can take a drink or leave it - which was always the case for me prior to my surgery ) As strange as this may sound - I don’t regret my surgery even though I do believe it contributed ( or I allowed it ) to me becoming addicted to alcohol ( maybe I might have been in control of alcohol at the very early stages but didn’t recognise the dangers or signs of addiction Thankfully and unbelievably my kidney and liver function is fine but I definitely recommend thiamin and take my vitamins b and d daily Please everyone out there be aware of alcohol post op - our bodies simply can’t absorb what it could when our bodies were heavier ( I lost 50 pounds - got very thin and alcoholic) All good now thanks to AA and working the AA program but I wouldn’t like anyone to go through the living hell of alcoholism
