Just so I remember...

Jul 11, 2010

OK, so last night was my sister's birthday celebration and so eight of us went to Craft, Tom Colicchio's restaurant in Century City. My sister is a huge Top Chef fan and adores Tom, so we decided it was a good place for her. It's an amazing restaurant; the decor is fabulous and the food? Well, here I go... (STOP READING NOW IF YOU'RE STILL ON LIQUIDS AND DYING TO EAT!)

I will say I only ordered the spinach and bacon salad, but I did partake in bites of everyone's meals (they all know about my band, so they were happy to oblige)... Skirt Steak, short ribs, halibut with chorizo, sirloin, gnocci, asparagus, sweet corn, an amuse bouche of whipped halibut and potato. It was unreal. I have been SUCH a good girl with my band and counting everything I put in my mouth, so I indulged. I was full, but not sickening so. Then we got a tour of the kitchen. See, my sister had linked Tom's Facebook page to hers so somehow they knew we were coming. We met the executive chef (Tony Zappola), and all the sous chefs and it was a real treat to see a professional kitchen. SO clean and pretty and smiling, happy workers.

When we got back to the table, we were ready to end the night but the restaurant staff had different plans. Dessert, compliments of Tom Colicchio. We got samples of every dessert on the menu. Corn fritters with blackberries and corn ice cream, sorbets and ice creams in every flavor (my favorite was the plum and zinfandel sorbet. OMG!), peanut butter rolls, fresh chocolate chip cookies, AMAZING. I had a bite of everything, which did push me over the edge. It was the first time since I got my band I felt uncomfortably full. I didn't get sick and it definitely took a while to digest, but looking back it was SO worth it. Of course now I need to exercise a whole lot more this week, but...

I guess my point is that even with the band we CAN indulge from time to time. I may have gone over the top a bit, but it's not something I do (or even can afford) every day. In the past I could have eaten about five times what my band allowed, but last night a bite of everything was sufficient and I actually felt like I could enjoy and be a part of a nice evening. Eating out before had become so picky and for this one night I didn't worry about it. And today I got right back in the saddle, counting my foods and protein. A year ago when I was still in the approval stage I thought my life of enjoying food was over and I'm sure a lot of you are in that boat now. But last night I learned it's possible to be "normal" with the band.

Oh and sitting right behind us was Warren Beatty. He's still so very handsome, so that was kinda cool...
