How I got here . . .

Feb 21, 2009

Although childhood pictures prove otherwise, I was made to feel fat by my mother by age 6 or 7. It didn't help that my younger sister's nickname was PeeWee. I was a size 16 on my wedding day (almost 25 years ago). My maid-of-honor (my sister) wore a size 6. I'm what is called a yo-yo dieter, taking off 75 then putting on 60, taking off 20 then putting on 40. And, apparently I am an emotional eater, which is odd because I can not eat when I am upset or stressed. But once I make it through a crisis I "reward" myself. My husband and I gained weight together over our marriage. He became diabetic about 4 years ago and had a RNY in June 2006 right after our oldest son's high school graduation. He just came home yesterday from having a tummy tuck and hernia repair. His surgeon removed 9# of skin (that is what my first son weighed!)  Now it's MY turn. I've completed my required six months of physician-supervised weight loss management (a totally underwelming success) and had an initial consultation with my bariatric surgeon. Next week is my psych eval. Once that is completed I can call my surgeon for my preoperative nutrition appointment and set the date. I'm hopeful but nervous. After two C-sections and a total hysterectomy 3.5 years ago, I vowed I would never have voluntary surgery. But here I am.
