I was born hungry according to my baby book. As a small child until about 7 I burned it off, but with a large appetite and parents divorce and other life issues I began eating to soothe myself. This became a family topic by the time I was 8 and I was at my first weight watchers meeting at 11. Looking back I realize that at 11 I really wasn't obese but chunky and had "baby fat". But the die was cast and my lifelong journey began.
I will add details of my story later.
A few months ago I began my persuit of wls with a lapband in mind due to fewer complications. I have reflux and barretts esophagus. I also have sleep apnea and ms. My gastroenterologist referred me to the Yale Bariatric program and Dr.Bell. I recieved a packet in the mail and at first the steps seemed daunting but I told myself took just start 1 thing at a time. I told my hubby that i was exploring the option and he thought it was extreme and why don't I just try again. I said ok but I was going to research the lapband.
I did the psych eval, the nutrition eval, the pcp's letter, records of my sleep studies, etc. Then a got a call from surgeons office saying that because of reflux and barretts I am a much better candidate for rny.
Whoa....now I had to wrap my head around this. The next Tuesday(4-14-09 I was sitting in an information session with 8 other patients, caregivers and nurse, admin, and the surgeon. Due to my esophagus an d oh yes a small hiatal hernia my new Dr was to be Dr. Duffy. He was great, understanding, funny and frank. I also had a physical with pcp and faxed those records(labs and an echocardiogram due to mitralvalve prolapse) to yale. I was told I will here this week(4-20-09) about a surgery date and then they go to insurance for approval. They said if we were at the info session they were fairly certain we'd be approved.
Now I am waiting to hear and researching rny. I have been reading this site since 4-14 and it is great.
