Well, I've jumped through all the hoops. Apparently I'm SANE. PCP thinks its a good idea since I'm relatively healthy other than the weight. Sleep doc thinks it will be a good thing and should help the apnea.
Because of some gastrointestinal symtoms and just so he'd know what to expect going into surgery my surgeon did a colonoscopy and an endoscopy of the upper GI tract...found a small stomach ulcer and very minor hiatal hernia. Neither should pose a problem for surgery. Put me on Prevacid for the ulcer and is going to rescope on 1/11 to see if it's healing. He said if the hernia is an issue it can be fixed at the time of band placement.
Colonoscopy prep is definitely everything anyone has ever described and MORE! I can definitely say I'll never EVER go to one of those trendy whacks who promote colon "cleansing"! Anyway, doctor removed one benign polyp and everything else seems to be healthy.
I have an appointment next Tuesday to go to a "class" on the proper diet to prep (shrink) my liver before surgery. I was told to expect to be there for about an hour and a half...apparently my ability to read is suspect and I need a professional to explain it all. Of course, since I could obviously have read other material on healthy eating habits and weight loss and I have still not managed to keep the weight off, it may be valid for them to suspect that I don't know how to read, right? I've also read some VERY strange versions of a liver shrinking diet (all the skim milk you can guzzle several times a day?!...really, I saw that on a message board!)
Anyway, we don't forsee any problems from my insurance company on approval...they have a very good reputation around here for covering this. So I am looking at approximately late February...surgeon wants 30 days on the liver shrinkage diet before surgery. That will make a nice birthday present for me...no cake this year!
