I did it

Apr 01, 2008

On March 31st I joined the local fitness center!!!  I feel really good about my decision too.  I went today and did a water aerobics class and I loved it.  It felt wonderful to be in the water and moving around without any pain!!!  I am going to go at least three times a week...maybe more if I can swing it.  I want to do step aerobics, pilates, yoga, and eventually circuit training.  I am still going to be walking daily as well because that gets me outside in the fresh air and also gets my dog some exercise too.  Well, not much else is happening to be honest.  Food is good, exercise is good, protein is good, vitamins are good...water is so/so...but getting better.  Life is WONDERFUL

Time Flies

Mar 27, 2008

Hello.  WOW it has been a while since I updated!!! Sorry about that.  Things were not so good for about a month.  I had the flu and was given antibiotics which caused the bad bacteria in my intestines to go crazy and I ended up with C-diff...let me tell you it is not fun.  The medicine you have to take is very hard on the system...but works.  I am feeling normal again and have started back on the weight loss journey with more energy.  I went to a local gym today to see how much membership will be and I will most likely be joining soon...need to discuss it with my better half first:)  I have been walking and using weights some and will start doing a regular routine of crunches, squats, leg lifts, etc.  starting on Monday.  I really wanted to start some time ago but with being so sick I couldn't even go out for walks and even if I could I didn't feel like it.  Well, take care of you!!!  God Bless

Random Update

Mar 02, 2008

Well, I have been sick for the past week and a half.  Finally went into the doctors on Wednesday of last week and got a shot in the butt, and some medicine.  I am feeling a little better but extremely tired.  I haven't had any desire to eat or drink and could not tolerate the protein at all for at least a week.  Today is the first day I am feeling better...but it is early.  I spent literally all day in bed yesterday and still managed to sleep all night too.  This virus is nasty to say the least.  I am hoping that today I will be able to get my liquids and protein in if nothing else.  My weight loss has been at a standstill since I became sick...no food in...no weight loss!!!  I haven't even had the energy to walk.  I tried a couple of times but didn't make it very far before feeling like I would pass out.  Figured the best thing I could do for myself is rest.  I hope this is the end of it so that I can get on with my life:)  Aside from that things are wonderful!!!

one month post op

Feb 15, 2008

Well yesterday was valentines day...and it was one month since my surgery too:)  It has been an amazing month.  I am not having any problems and I am still following all doctors orders to a T.  The only issue I have had is sometimes I eat too fast and this causes some discomfort...but it passes quickly and I stop eating when it happens.  I see Dr, Barker on the 22nd for my appointment.  According to my scale I am currently at 264 down 37 pounds since January 1!!!  Yeah me:)
Today is my 16th wedding anniversary!  I have been so blessed in my life.  I couldn't ask for more.

Two weeks post op

Jan 30, 2008

Hi!  Well it has been just over two weeks since I had my surgery.  Life is good!  I no longer have pain or discomfort for the most part.  Sometimes my left side where my tummy is hurts after eating but it's not too bad.  I am not sure if I posted this or not but at my one week check-up they told me I could start eating soft foods...not pureed or liquid...I tried and some things are okay and other things tend to make me feel kinds icky so I choose to stick with mostly liquids still.  I can eat mashed potatoes and mac and cheese without issue so if I feel the need to "eat" something that is what I will try.  I am still tired sometimes but not overly.  I am getting all my protein, my water and my vitamins in each day.  I am using things like V8 Fusion to get my veggies and fruits in each day.  I am not meeting to requirement daily but at least I am getting some in.  My incisions are healing and looking better each day.  I am applying lotion to help clear up the dry skin around them where the staples were.  Just wanted to post a little update for those that might be interested.  Oh...weight loss this week was 4 pounds...so I am done 28 pounds total since liquid diet phase!!!  It's awesome...with that I not longer have any edema in my hands or my legs, my knee doesn't hurt when I go up and down stairs, I can stand and do my dishes without getting a bad backache and having to constantly take breaks.  I have not taken my blood pressure meds or  the lasix since surgery and my blood pressure has been perfect...it amazes me because I was about 90 pounds lighter when they put me on those meds...I figured it would be a few months before I would be able to stop taking them and have normal blood pressure again.  Definitly a wonderful benefit of surgery!!!  God Bless

one week post op

Jan 22, 2008

Today I had my one week post op visit.  I met with Dr. Thompson and he removed my staples...painless...thank goodness:)  After that we sat and chatted a bit about my eating/drinking/reflux/medications...etc.  He took my blood pressure and was very pleased with it...I have not taken my blood pressure meds or the lasix since surgery!!!  He also had me stop taking the high cholesterol meds.  I still have to monitor my blood pressure and be aware of how I am feeling relating to blood pressure.

Then came the scale...according to their records...which I weighed back in November was 297 and todays weight was 282 so that is 15 pounds by their scale.  Well Christmas and New Years did come after that...along with my Birthday so lets just say the scale had gone up some since that visit.  By my scale (which did weigh me the same as theirs in November) starting on 7 January 2008 I weighed 301 and now weigh 277...so according to my scale I have lost 24 pounds, 12 of which came off from the liquid diet pre-surgery.

So each time I post a weight like this I will continue to include both.  I am excited either way.  I am on the LOSERS BENCH!!!

5 days out

Jan 19, 2008

Hi...well it has been five days since my surgery. I have been feeling pretty
well overall.  I am getting in all my protein, some water, and my vitamins each day.  I also manage to eat a little soup for lunch each day.  I have not used any pain medicine for several days now.  I get out and walk each day and have started taking care of some household chores once again.  Today was the first day that it didn't really hurt to get up out of bed which is a pleasant change.  I have not had any vomiting but sometimes I have some pressure.  I was surprised to realize I get gas from propel...I cannot stand plain water so I do crystal light and propel...but I think I might have to stop the propel due to the gas pressure.
I will write again after my one week check-up...take care and God Bless

Post Op Update

Jan 16, 2008

Hello.  Well I had my surgery on Monday as planned.  I arrived at the hospital at 7:00am and was promptly admitted and taken to my room.  The room I had was very nice compared to the room I had just a few months ago at the same hospital.  The first day my nurses were Pat and Steve and they were both wonderful.  They took my vitals and hooked me up to the IV and everything else I needed before Surgery.  At about 10:15 they took me from my room down to the waiting area for surgery.  I was given a couple of nice warm blankets which were very much appreciated.  After about 10 or 15 minutes I was taken into the OR and had to get on the table there.  I remember being sort of strapped down and then it's a blank until I was in my room.  My husband was there waiting for me and a little while later my Angel P.A. came up.  I was really sort of out of it while they were there.  I was feeling EXTREMELY sick to my stomach and nearly vomited...but didn't.  Things started to subside after I started walking the halls.  Let me tell you...I WALKED those hallways a LOT...I didn't sleep much at the hospital so if I was awake I would make the rounds of the three hallways twice each hour or half hour.  It helped with the pain and the pressure from the gas.  I didn't actaully pass any gas until I came home...which is nice because I would have been embarrassed there:)  I truly believe that the walking is what helps the most I improved my recovery after my hysterectomy that way and after this surgery too.  My night nurse was Millie and she was also very helpful and friendly.  I only pushed the demerol button a grand total of 5 times before it was disconnected and have taken only three doses of Loratab...two at the hospital and one at home.  I didn't feel I needed anything stronger then liquid tylenol so I stopped the Loratab and things have been fine.  I had some cream of celery soup twice today and the rest has been water and propel.  Even doing sips all the time I see how people have difficulty getting in the 64oz of water a day.  Hopefully over the next few days I will get better with that.  I am going to try a protein shake this evening...get started back on those again.  I have started taking my vitamins and supplements so all is good.  My journey has officially begun and it is WONDERFUL to finally be on the LOSERS BENCH!!!
Blessings

Pre-Op

Jan 11, 2008

Today I went to the hospital for my pre-op appointment.  It consisted of paperwork, bloodwork, and chest x-rays.  I am supposed to arrive at the hospital at 7:00am on 1/14/08 and my surgery is scheduled for 10:30.  Just a couple days left to go!!!

pre-op diet

Jan 09, 2008

Today makes 5 days on the clear liquid pre-op diet.  This is a VERY difficult diet to follow for more than a couple of days.  I have been having a cup of tea in the morning with 1/2 cup ofsf jello for breakfast, and a cup of tea, cup of sf jello and cup of broth for lunch and dinner, and sf popsicles as snacks.  I am also drinking plenty of water, propel, crystal light during the day.  One thing no one warned me about is about day three you end up with diahrea and a VERY noisy stomach.  Guess your intestines get cleaned out from all the liquids.  Would have been nice to know in advance:) This is working to help me lose some weight prior to surgery...I have lost 12 pounds since starting on it.  I am beginning to feel rather weak and after talking to several other people that have had the same doctor and same surgery I learned they were allowed to have ANYTHING as long as it was liquid...sooo I have decided to at least allow myself two protein drinks because I think my calorie intake is too low doing clear liquids and sugar free only.  I don't want to become too weak.  All in all I am doing well.  I am looking forward to Monday with every ounce of my being...which is a lot...lol!  My husband and family continue to be very supportive and I am so greatful for their love and support.  I know this is hard for them...but when its all over and the weight comes off and the health problems go away they will see it was well worth it.  I go tomorrow for my pre-op...last step before surgery...
