_________________________________________________ Debbie, I think the reason most surgeons want you to quit smoking prior to surgery is because they want your lungs to be as healthy as possible before surgery. They want to be precautious to make sure you don't get pneumonia or unpleasant affects after surgery, as well as if you have been smoking for a while you want to get that flem out of your throat. Also, smokers heal slower, get more ulcers, and have more ‘PAIN’, from coughing. You are more likely to get pouch leaks and the nicotine keeps the body from receiving enough oxygen to heal properly. You have to remember that smoking makes your lungs much more vulnerable to something like depress your respiratory system with the anesthesia and sometimes even the medications that they will be giving you. My suggestion to you is to stop smoking right now!! As you have read you will be doing yourself a big favor. I have not gone through my surgery but I’m making sure to get informed from this site and by asking my doctor, my surgery is scheduled for 10/21/03. Remember if you quit smoking now it will be easier post-op. My husband did have his surgery and he was given a Spiro meter, a little plastic machine that you breathe into and make the little ball raise. I would suggest you use this faithfully and give it 100%. It helps your lungs inflate and move oxygen since they don't get exercised as much while you are lying in bed. (This will also help to fight against pneumonia.) This is what I have learned form reading in this site and asking my surgeon questions. I would definitely ask my surgeon these questions because all doctors are different. Don’t take my comments verbatim as I’m no expert AT ALL. As for when to resume sexual intercourse after post-op, well it really varies depending on what kind of surgery you will be having, I know that it really depends on how you feel and when you feel you are ready. I have read some people get intimate the day they leave the hospital and for others 2 weeks after and as long as 2-4 months after. I would ask my doctor this question. I know it is difficult and sometimes when you get to your appointments our brains turn into mush!!! LOL! My suggestion would be is before your next appointment either write or type all the questions that you may have and make sure to leave space between questions. When you see your doctor tell him ‘these are some of the questions I have’ and hand him the paper. This is what I did and it was easier than having to ask them. Also, Debbie again I have not had my surgery but my husband has. He was strictly on liquids and drinking things like sugar free cranberry juice, sugar free Carnation instant breakfast, Jell-O, lots and lots of water, chicken broth, beef broth, cream of chicken (watered down), and crystal light. Now all doctors are different so I would again ask him this question, a lot of Bariatric clinics will give you a list of what you should be taking after you go home for the fist few weeks and so on. I would ask if they have a list for you so you can prepare for when you get home, this way you get all your shopping done before you go into surgery. It is very important that you trust asking these questions to your doctor. Remember you are putting your life on this doctors hands, you should feel more confident in asking these questions or do the writing down questions like I did, it really helps. Thank you for your prayers I will definitely keep you in mine. I tried e-mailing you but it was returned as failed to be send so I will post this on your web site. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow. I hope this helped and God bless you. **** _________________________________________________
