2 yr Follow Up Appt and Tummy Tuck Consult!

Jun 10, 2011

The doc had nothing but good things to say (well at least that's all I clinged to).  LOL.
Starting weight 328
Lowest weight   165
Goal weight      160
Current weight  171

Doctor says I’m doing well and maintaing well.  Says he couldn't ask for more.  Then he says...."oh, your Iron is at a 5 when it should be about 10".  "Take 2 doses a day instead of the 1 dose you have been taking".  Then this is where I failed to speak up.  I didn't mention to him that I haven't been taking my Iron like he told me to a couple months ago.  Because I was told not to take iron with my calcium supplement, I tend to forget to take the iron.  "It's real important you get your iron back up unless you want a blood transfusion.  Besides, I can't perform a tummy tuck on you unless you get those iron levels under control."  Now after hearing that from the doc, I was like I have to do this right.  Tummy tuck or not, I should have never ignored my iron level being low a couple months ago and made it a priority this entire time.  So this was the breakdown of the cost for the tummy tuck:

Hospital  $1500

Anesthesia $500
Surgeon  $5000
"Let me palpate your abdomen.  Yup, you have a small hernia near your belly button.  That means your insurance will cover the hospital and Anesthesia fees.  That leaves you with a balance of $5000.  Depending on your insurance they might cover an additional on the $5000 leaving you with possibly $3500-$3800 fee instead."  My jaw dropped.  I was expecting to have to pay a lot more.  This sounds reasonable and I think I can save this much by the end of the year.  I'm going to try really hard to save as much as I can.  This made my day, my weekend, my month.  Haven't talked to the hubby about it yet.  Hope to get the support I wish for.  I can't expect him to be excited though since he goes through a lot when I’m sick in the hospital, recovering from previous surgeries, hernias, you name it, he's had to deal with it all.
Wish me luck!

2 year follow up appt coming soon. AWWW!

May 26, 2011

2 year follow up appointment is just around the corner.  I can't believe it has been this long already.  I feel like it was just a couple of months ago.  It's crazy how time flys by when you're healthier and keeping active.  I'm always working, taking care of my parents (due to disabilities), attending to the husband and kids, helping my brother out on the weekends selling electronics and gaming stuff at the flea markets and delivering water-slide rentals on the weekends. I still find time to go dancing at least once a week with my husband too.  There is no way I would have been able to keep that busy when I weighed 328 lbs.  I feel burnt out at times like I'm doing too much, but it's all worth it.  Up until this afternoon I was feeling like a failure for allowing myself to gain 13 lbs in the past couple months.  My lowest weight was 165 and I now weigh 178.  My doc wants me to weigh 160.  My goal is 165.  I wrote a post yesterday about how I felt like a failure for gaining weight.  Coming back onto OH has made me realize that I have lost a lot of weight and that I'm practically 1/2 the size I use to be so I have accomplished a lot and should be extremely proud of myself.  It's good that I caught the weight gain now and not later down the road.  It's good that I have acknowledged that I have to do something to get back on track.  I know that I have to stop drinking my 3-4 Coronas every weekend, stop eating candy, reduce my bread intake and go back to drinking/eating my protein first.  Protein daily requirement has always been hard for me to reach but I need to remind myself that going back to weighing 328 lbs will even be harder and even devastating.  I hadn't blogged on OH for a while and now I realize what I was missing.  OH gives me support, confidence, motivation and above all some "act-right".  LOL  Thanks for reading and i hope to stay connected.  Love you All!

3rd Hernia Surgery was a Success

Sep 17, 2010

Subject: RE: Hello!
Sorry I blogged sooner.  I was in San Francisco at the Hospital with my father.  He had to have cerebral artery bypass surgery.  He had 100%, 95% and 60% plaque blockage in 3 different cerebral arteries.  One of the best Neuro surgeon's in the country is in SF UCSF hospital so that's why we were over there.  He is doing very well and should be discharged this Saturday.

Thanks for your support.

I had the hernia surgery 9/8/10.  Per Dr. Felix, he stated that I had lost a lot more weight since last hernia surgery and that caused the old stitched lining to pull apart and created another opening (that's how I understood it).  States I have no fat in my stomach anymore .  States this time he took a lot more tissue to suture the opening more securely (?).  I have a follow up appt in 1 week and I'm gonna ask for images and a better explanation.  He said the Hernia was very large and was surprised I wasn't in a lot more pain and I was able to wait 5 days for surgery.  The hernia wasn't painful for me as long as I didn't eat or drink but the pain after surgery was worst than the WLS it self and previous hernias.  I actually used up most of my Vicodin.  I still have my gallbladder, doc stated it showed normal so no point in removing it.  I'm just glad that I'm feeling great now and hopefully no more hernias will pop up.

1 yr 2 months Post Op- 3rd Hernia already!

Sep 03, 2010

This is getting redundent.  I just finished paying off my last(March 2010) Hernia surgery medical bill Wednesday and here I am diagnosed with another hernia.  What luck.  Let me explain to you how my week started and so far has ended:
* Sunday night I had a very light Margarita (1oz Jose Cuervo and 12 oz of Margarita mix).
* Monday I wake up with a mean azz temporal headache, dry mouth, body aches, runny nose and sore throat.
* Tuesday i'm feeling a bit worse with the cold symptoms so I schedule an appt with my primary MD for Wednesday morning.
* Wednesday morning i'm feeling great so i cancel my MD appt.  I had 1/2 slice of thin crust pizza for lunch which I washed down with water 10 min after eating.  I immediately began to have sharp abdominal pain.  I thought for sure it was because i mixed the food and liquids too soon (didn't wait 20-30 min) Pain lasted for about 2 hours and then I felt fine.
* Thursday I woke up feeling fine.  I ate 6 oz of shrimp for lunch and had 1 bite of my sons cheeseburger.  I started to have severe abdominal pain again.  It felt like the food was stuck in my stomach so I took a shot of Milk of Magnesium in hopes it would resolve.  From 12pm-5pm I was on my hands and knees with on/off excrutiating pain.  I had called my WLSurgeon at 2pm and he said he was in surgery all day and would not be able to see me until 9am Friday morning.  At 5pm I took some Vicodin for the pain.  The water I drank to take the pill caused me pain.  @ 2am, 4am, 6am I threw up so much liquids it was coming out my mouth, nose and even from my eyes!  After all the barfing I felt so much better and no longer had the sharp abdominal pain.
* Friday morning i'm not having any abdominal pain but I still go to my WLSurgeon appt.  By the time i'm at the appt I noticed my abdomen looked distended (I looked 3 months pregnant).  He palpated my abdomen and sure enough, he says it's most likely another hernia.  He says, "since your not having pain right now we can wait and see how you do over the holiday weekend and I will schedule to follow up with you Tuesday to setup surgery for Wednesday morning first thing.  If you have severe pain from here til Tuesday, don't hesitate to call me and we will perform emergency surgery.  Also, we might as well remove your gallbladder since it could be a culprit in the future and we might as well get that out of the way to avoid another future surgery".  Apprarently I was reading that gallstones are very common after WLS so I guess it wouldn't hurt to get that removed.

This news is just so upseting because I do have co-pays and 20% out of pocket expenses I will have to pay that my insurance doesn't cover.  The last hernia surgery i had my surgeon said he was positive and almost guarenteed I shouldn't have another hernia after the way he had repaired it.

For now all I can do is sip, sip, sip water and hopefully avoid getting dehydrated and make it thorugh until Wednesday.

1 year Surgiversary and feeling great!

Jun 14, 2010

1 year surgiversary and feeling great!  Can't believe it has been 1 year already.  The first 6 months seemed to go by real slow and from there after things just sped up quickly.  All in all it's been a great journey.  I can't complain about the obstacles in my journey when I compare them to the good things that have occurred since WLS.  I've had 2 hernias, 1 in November 2009 and 1 in March 2010.  I've lost 145 lbs!  I'll take 2 hernias any day for 145 lbs lost.  I now have outrageous energy that I could have only dreamed of before WLS.  I go to nursing school in the morning from 6:45am-2:30pm and work from 3:00pm-11:30pm M-F.  I also have a Water slide rental business and chores that keep me busy on the weekends.  Not to mention I also have to make sure my kids and hubby are taken care of 24/7.  There is no way I would have been able to manage all of these things weighing 330 lbs 1 yr ago.  Not only do I have the energy to get all of these things done, I do them with a smile on my face and my head held up high.  I remember telling my kids and hubby "could you please get me a drink out the fridge", "could you get me the remote control", "Go get the newspaper for me", "Can you pick that up for me" etc... I never wanted to get my fat azz up off the couch or bed.  Now I'm a busy bee and no one can hold me back.  Before WLS I would get so tired and grouchy.  I guess because I was so unhappy with myself I became a grouch with my family and friends.  My self-esteem is sky high.  My relationship with my husband is amazing!  My husband has never had an issue with me being overweight but I use to argue a lot with him for the smallest things because I was miserable and I guess unconsciously I wanted him to be miserable with me.  Weired... I know.  I just hope that this tool will continue to work for me.  I need to continue utilizing it the right way.  Ultimately it is up to me to keep the weight off which will be the hard part.  But being this light taste soo good, it taste better than my large combo pizza I use to eat by myself.  The transition of leaving the large unhealthy food portions behind was a little hard but well worth it.  All I can continue to say is that WLS was one of my best decisions in life and I wish I would have done it sooner.

9 Months post surgery and feelin OK

Mar 21, 2010

9 months post surgery and feeling OK.  I currently weigh 195,which is down 5 lbs from being stuck at 200lbs forever.  I'm down 5 lbs probably only because I got sick last Sunday.  I was in Oakland last Sunday getting ready to come back home to Fresno (3 hr drive) when I got this sharp excruciating pain in my upper abdomen.  Did I say EXCRUCIATING!!!!!  I thought I was gonna give birth to a monster or something because it felt like it was coming through my stomach (not pregnant). . I was down on the ground on all fours trying to get comfortable enough to withstand the pain.  My cousin had to rush me to the nearest ER.  I walked in and luckily there weren't that many people.  I was gonna sit down and wait to be called on but the pain was so intense all I could do was get on the ground again on all fours and beg for help .  Literally begging for help .  The triage nurse saw the pain I was in and rushed me into a back room where they gave me Dilauded (i think that's how you spell it) which is stronger than Morphine.  Took the edge off the pain but I could still feel pressure.  I guess my body was soo exhausted I fell asleep for couple hours.  Nurses kept bugging me to wake up and breath because my pulse was 45 and my oxygen level was 76%.  They thought that maybe my body must have relaxed a bit too much with the narcotic they gave me.  1/2 hr later they gave me a 2nd dose of the narcotic because the pain was coming back.  They performed x-rays and nothing.  They did a CT scan, which I had to drink a contrast for , and the nurse tells me "the person to read the CT scan results has gone home for the night (it's 11pm in the ER mind you) and they won't be able to read the result till the morning."  WHAT? "We will have to admit you over night to keep an eye on you until then."  At this point with the 2nd dose of narcotics I'm feeling pretty darn good so I'm a stubborn little BI$CH and tell the nurse that I do not want be be admitted and that I'm driving back home.  I sign the papers and leave against their medical advice.  My husband and kids were with me and thank god my husband wasn't sleepy.  My hubby drove all the way back home.  I called my surgeon here in Fresno at Midnight and he told me not to worry and to make it home safe and see him in the morning first thing.  He also said that if the excruciating pain returned to go to the ER and he would meet me there.  I LOVE MY DOC!  So luckily we made it home safe and sound and I was able to get a few hours of rest.  I saw my doc and he said it was most likely a Hernia.  He said if my pain level was low he would perform Laproscopic Diagnostic surgery on Thursday (3/18/10) but if the pain intensified before than I should give him a call.  I had surgery this past Thursday and yup, it was a Hernia.  According to the Doc, it was a fairly LARGE hernia.  He reinforced my abdominal muscle with mesh, I think, to prevent this from happening again.  It's been 4 days since surgery and I'm feeling good.  Returning to work tonight at 10pm is a bummer but I'm out of sick pay and can't afford more time off.  Oh, and if your wondering what caused my Hernia, who knows.  I had started Bally's cardio kickboxing and resistance and toning workout last week 3 times a week, could that have cause it?  Maybe.  I know I didn't lift anything that was heavy.  If it was the cardio kickboxing, I just wonder why my Hernia didn't hurt last week when I working out.  Why did it hurt 3-4 days after working out?  I don't know but whatever the cause I'm just glad it's over with.

As for everything else, I feel great!  I can't believe I'm 135 lbs down.  I'm 15 lbs away from goal.  I hope I can get 15lbs down within the next 3 months.  These obstacles in the road are little compared to the rewards of living a healthier and lighter life style.  I wouldn't change my WLS for anything in the world.  I still think this is one of the best decisions I've made in my life!

5 months Post-op, 95 lbs Gone Forever!

Nov 11, 2009

I'm 5 months post op today and I couldn't feel any better, well maybe if I was on target with my protein intake.  HeHeHe.  But even with the lack of Protein I've been feeling great.  I can't believe it has been 95 lbs lost in 5 months!  Isn't that the craziest thing?  I still can't grasp the reality of it.  I sure did have a few WOW moments this past weekend when I went shopping for some jeans.  I was a size 26-28 before RNY surgery and before this past weekend I was squeezing into size 18.  I went to Target first to shop their clearance rack because their prices are great.  I grabbed a pair of jeans in size 18 and they were loose.  ???  I couldn't believe it!  I was looking good in a size 16, 16?  WTF?  I hadn't seen size 16 since I was a freshman in High School!  Size 16 stretch boot cut no gap waist jeans from Target are the best!  Then I went to Torrid because I had a $10 coupon I wanted to use and tried on a size 16 denim skirt.  WTF?  Size 16 at Torrid fit me a little loose.  I fit into a size 14 black stretch denim skirt!  Size 14?  I hadn't wore that size since middle school!  I got so excited I tried on a top too.  I figured a size 1 (14-16) would fit.  Nope, that was a bit loose.  A size 0?  I couldn't believe I was wearing a size 0 (10-12).  Pretty soon I'll be too small for Torrid.  When I went to the cash register at Torrid to pay for my top and skirt I was crying and laughing all at the same time, i was an emotional mess.  The cashier didn't know what to do or say,she was like "are you OK?"  I explained to her why I was so happy and she just laughed and almost cried with me.  I felt like such a fool when I got home but I couldn't control my emotions.  LOL!

12 Weeks Post, 68 Pounds Lost!

Sep 03, 2009

I'm 12 weeks post, 68 lbs lost and feeling GREAT!  I wore a dress this past Saturday at my company dinner and couldn't remember the last time I wore one and felt sooo damn sexy!  It was amazing to hear all the compliments I received from fellow co-workers.  I wish I had taken more photos!  (I'll post a few tonight)  Oh! and to top it off, we had Jay Leno as a guest at the dinner!  He gave us a 1 hour comedy show!  It was great.  I had a blast!

On another note, I've been feeling exhausted lately.  I've been working 6 days a week 12 hours a day for the past 6 weeks!  They say this weekend is the last 6th day for a long time.  I hope it's true.  As for the 12 hrs, it's been a must for about 2 months already until we find someone to cover the night shift.  My boss says she is going to offer the position to a promising candidate next week.  I sure do hope so, I requested 2 vacation days on 9/28-9/29 to celebrate my sons 5th bday and it's not going to get approved if they don't hire someone soon.

My hubby eats "junk" from time to time and I don't blame him.  After all he's not overweight and he didn't have surgery, but I just wish he didn't eat any "junk" anyways since it's not good for his health regardless how much he weighs.  Or if he wants the "junk" so bad, eat it when i'm not around.  Other than his eating habits, he's really good about pestering me about my protein and vitamins lately.  He's always checking my pill container to make sure i've taken them.  He's gotten upset with me sometimes because I miss 1-2 days.  I know it's not right, but sometimes it gets a little frustrating to get all my pills and protein in.  A lot of people think WLS is easy and they ask me why I took the easy way out.  Easy way out!!!??? NOT TRUE.  It takes time and dedication to follow the rules and make sure you don't mess up and take your daily requirements in.  I've never been a pill taker, not even Midol, Tylenol or Advil.  So it has been a struggle for me but well worth it.  This last week I've been very diligent and didn't miss a day of protein or pills so I guess that's why I lost 6 lbs in one week!  Now how's that for motivation?  It makes me not want to miss my protein or vitamins ever again!

As for exercising, I'm barely recovering from my embarrassing bicycle accident 3 1/2 weeks ago.  My (R) ankle and (R) knee are still a bit swollen.  It turned out that I had fractured my little toe and possibly torn my (R) meniscus.  I do take 2- 1 mile walks daily here at work on my lunches, other than that i'm sleeping.  I work 12 hr days so it doesn't leave much time for extra activities.

RNY surgery is still one of my best decisions i've ever made!

Today i'm 2 months post RNY!!!

Aug 10, 2009

Today i'm 2 months post RNY and I couldn't be happier with my weight loss.  I have dropped 60 POUNDS!!!!!  This is so amazing!  I can't believe I have been able to drop this much weight in such a short period of time.  That's practically 1 pound a day since surgery.  I definately see it in my clothes and in my new pictures.  My husband says he definately notices a difference in my mood swings and my self-esteem.  I've already had to buy a few underwear since my old ones are starting to fall off.  Before I knew it my old ones were sagging down to my thighs. LOL.  I use to buy size 24/26 panties at Lane Bryant, now i'm buying size 18/20.  I also purcahsed a few sports bras since they are cheaper then buying new fitting bras.  I still have quite a bit to lose so I don't want to buy too much right now.  Thank god I saved most of my smaller clothes from when I dated my hubby because I'm putting them to use now.  I fit into my old pants size 20 and some 22's.  I get soooo estatic when I try on some of my old clothes.  The best compliment i've had so far is that I look soo much younger.  That i've knocked years off of me.  I always struggled with looking so much older then what I really was all throughout my teenage years.  Not that it was always a negative because I got to use that to my advantage at times.    My sister is 9 yrs older than me and people would always ask who was the oldest.  It was so depressing.  How could a 34 yr old mother of 6 children look so much younger than a 25 yr old mother of 2 children?  Well that's not the case anymore and it feels GREAT!

Well along with the good news I also have bad news.  I went bike riding the other day and flew off my bicycle!  Landed on my knees and sprained the heck out of my right ankle.  Both of my knees are a bloody mess and my footand ankle are so damn swollen you can't even tell were my ankle bone is at.  Oh, and my bicycle is totaled.  It was a gift 1 yr ago from my husband when I tried to ride my bike to work but it was too painful.  I only used my bike a handful of times since surgery and now it's totaled along with my body.  I've been off work for 2 days now and I have 1 more day before I go back to work.  I hope my ankle doesn't hurt as much by then.  Then I was stuck with "what the hell am I gonna take for pain?"  I tried Tylenol and it just didn't help like I though it would.  I stil had some Lortab so I took some of that but now i'm extremely constipated.  Well I guess i'm gonna have to go get some flax seed oil or magnesium citrate.  Well worth a good nights sleep though.  I will be taking my 2 month post RNY photos later today and post them.  THANK GOODNESS FOR MY RNY SURGERY!!!

8 weeks and feeling weak.....

Aug 05, 2009

8 weeks post and I'm feeling weaker than ever.  I haven't been taking my protein.  I need the protein but I get nauseous just thinking about it.  I'm working 5-6 days a week and 12 hrs a day.  I'm taking my vitamins but I just can't seem to take my protein.  I'm going to GNC today and try some of the protein bars and see if that works.  I'm also going to go buy some Biotin because my hair is already starting to fall out.  That's why I went and got this drastic short-short haircut that I don't even like.  I'd been use to having the same hair style for the past 7-8 yrs and thought since my body  was changing it was also time for a hair change.  Well I was WAY WAY WRONG.  I just hope that it grows sooner than expected.  I was feeling OK up until I got this haircut.  I think I got a little depressed after the haircut.  Especially since my hubby did not like it at all.  He's never seen me with short hair nor do I think he ever wanted to.  My smart azz answer to him that day was, "Well it's a good thing I went in for the haircut for me and not for you so who cares if you don't like it because I do."  He knows that was a lie because he could see it all in my face when I was trying to style it before leaving for work.  It's crazy how your self-image can get you so down.  Also my new relationship with food is starting to get depressing.  Don't get me wrong, I would never regret exchanging my bad eating habits for a healthier life but I sure do miss eating certain foods, like bread, meat, and sticky rice.  RNY is still the best choice I've ever made and I strongly feel that way, but I guess I thought it was going to be a lot easier than it has been.  Well enough of the sad drama, on a lighter note, I went out dancing for the first time since surgery on 8/1/09 and I had a blast.  I couldn't believe how much energy I had and to top it off, I danced and danced and my ankles or back didn't even hurt.  AMAZING.  I felt so young again.  I am only 25 yrs old but with all the excess weight I felt like I was 35.  I really did.  But not anymore and as long as I live, not ever!  Can't wait to go out again soon.  Dancing is what makes me the happiest.  To be able to enjoy it again without pain is well worth having WLS for.  Maybe if I'm feeling a bit depressed this weekend I'll go out and dance to pick my spirits back up again.  :)  Goal for the day:  PROTEIN, PROTEIN, PROTEIN!!!!!
