My name is Nicole, I’m 22 years old, and from Stockton California. I am in the process of losing my 10% to get a surgery date.
I have been overweight majority of my life, but I believe the real problem began around 3rd grade. Starting then, I got heavier and heavier every year. I began my first diet at around at 13, I went to Weight Watchers and lost about 40lbs. After losing this weight, I felt really good about myself and though I was still overweight, was feeling much better. Shortly thereafter, things in my life changed dramatically, and not exactly for the best. I believe I turned to food even more than I had before, at this point. I dieted off and on up until and all through High School.
High School was a miserable time for me, and I believe I turned to food even more than I ever had, leading to a 40-50lbs gain in those 4 years, despite all of the ‘fad’ diets I tried during this time. Fast food became my best friend Junior year, when I was able to leave campus to get food. And I would sit in my car and devour whatever possible, to allow myself to go back and bare the rest of the day. In the 4 years since high school, I have still dieted off and on, but have gained about 90lbs.
At age 20 I began looking to WLS as an option. I began the process Kaiser, my insurance, required of me. This process changed twice during the time I was going through it, and I had to begin all over again two times. It was somewhat discouraging, but looking at it now I’m glad it went that way, as it gave me a lot of time to do the research I’ve done, to make sure this truly as the right choice for me. I am 110% sure this is the right choice, and am looking forward to life after surgery.
I finally met my surgeon, Christine Chu, in May 2007. I will be having surgery on November 20, 2007.
My ultimate goal after surgery is to run in the San Francisco marathon. I will accomplish this in the near future! :)
