Day 2

Sep 09, 2009

Well, in my haste to finish up my first blog yesterday, I neglected to elaborate on my goals, my starting point and what my plan of attack is.

Here goes...I read an article of a woman about my age (44) who's life basically mirrored my own, in her weight struggles that is.  She decided once and for all to take a slow and steady approach and ended up losing 120 pounds in one year.  I started thinking, “Hey, if she can do this, so can I!”  Breaking it down, 120 pounds in a year, that’s 10 pounds a month, or 2.5 pounds per week.  We ALL know that the health community says 1-2 pounds per week is a great pace for weight loss.  I’m looking to lose 100 pounds, but truthfully would be happy with about 75-80.

I think in the beginning I’m going to need some motivation, so I’m loosely following the Fat Smash Diet by Dr. Ian Smith.  I need to follow something in order to break my habits.  If I just say "I'm going to eat less and healthier" it won't work.  With the Fat Smash Diet, I think I can do that because it’s closer, food-wise, to how I like to eat.  We’ll see.  This may be a trial and error on a massive scale…going through all the types of diets out there.  Although it’s not like I haven’t tried them all, at least a few times.  The problem is that usually I try them, expecting amazing results in a week.  When that doesn’t happen, I give up.  My other big problem is the after work cocktail(s).  Loads of empty calories.  How do I relax after work and stop the habit?  I’m not the knitting, puzzle working, book reading kind of person.  My book reading gets done in bed before I go to sleep.  Exercising maybe?  I suppose I can try.  That’ll boost my exercise to twice a day.  Again…we’ll see.

I’m still figuring out what my workout schedule will be.  I usually work out on my lunch hour at my job. Yesterday and today I’ve walked on the treadmill at 3.5 MPH for 50 minutes changing between 1% and 4% incline.  I will definitely continue that, but I think I’ll add some workout DVD’s and weights.  I know I need to build muscle to burn fat.  Hell, I think I know enough to be a nutritionist and personal trainer…I just need to put all this information into action for ME!!!  Why don’t I?  Why haven’t I?  I do think I need a shrink to help me figure this part out.

Well, away we go.  Here are my specs, putting it out there for the whole world to see.  I’m going to try to blog everyday, but I know that’s probably unrealistic.  But I will do my best.
