On April 4, 2004 my life change for the better.  I owe my life to the DS.  Before surgery I was a few pounds over 500lbs. Today I am consistently 280-285. Today I am 6'5" and 67 yers old. I was 49 on the date of surgery.  I didn't go through the DS for looks but I had surgery to get my life back.  I have had a great life since surgery.  I remember not being able to sit in a booth, having to get a seat belt extender on airplanes, not being able to walk more than a few steps without losing my breath, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and constant joint pain, and the "looks" I would get from people .  Today I don't have sleep apnea, can walk as far as I want, have minimal joint pain and I have a total cholesterol level of 86. Yes 86!  Currently I am seeing a Dr trying to get my calcium and vitamin D levels up.  No idea why they have dropped but I am under treatment to get those levels up.  I have slackedoff on the protein drinks and that also showed up on my recent labs. So I am back drinking those 2 times daily.   I am off all prescriptions now except for a potassium tablet and a Vitamin D prescription strength.  If I had not gone through with the surgery there is no doubt I would either be dead now or bed ridden.  I thank God for being able to play w my grandchildren and staying active with my wife and kids.  I have the greatest wife ever and she has been my rock supporting me. I Still see my DS surgeon as well as my PCP at Mayo Clinic. I encourage those who are contemplating this surgery to do your research and decide if it is for you.  For me it was the best decision of my life!
