When I got married at the age of 20, I weighed 110# .   I was an average weight for my height until I got pregnant at the age of 21 with our first child.  I gained 65# with that pregnancy and never lost it all.   I miscarried twice after that, each time adding a few more pounds.  My second and third full-term pregnancies just added to the weight load.   I also became an emotional eater, especially resorting to sugared foods when I was stressed.   We spent  some time in the military in which I was bascially a single parent and we moved 37 times within a 15 year span.  Nothing like a little stress!  LOL   I was definitely one who followed the rule "Hand over the chocolate and no one gets hurt!" LOL

Over the years I've tried every diet imaginable....but even I didn't realize how much yo-yo dieting I had done over the years until I had to write my diet history for the bariatric doctor and nutritionist.  I wanted to be sure I listed everything, so I searched my journals, calendars from years ago, medical records, my bookshelf and my memory.  What I ended up with was 5 pages of Diets that I've tried and enough diets to make me cringe!   People desperate to lose weight (like me) will try anything, and I did.  From the egg diet, to grapefruit, ayds candies and no-fat, no- sugar, no-taste to special shoe inserts, every crazy exercise equipment & video advertised and even an accupressure ear piece.   If you need a good laugh or maybe a good cry, just think of all the crazy things you've done to lose weight with the best of intentions.

My favorite program was the Dr. Phil Weight Loss Challenge that started in the fall of 2003.
This is a great program and one with tools that will help anyone having weight loss surgery too.  He attacks the weight loss problem from several dimensions not just from the food aspect.   I did manage to lose some weight on this program and still belong to the Dr.Phil WLC - Maine online support group.

Everyone has obstacles in their weight loss journey and one of mine is genetics. I come from a mostly obese family.  My father last weighed in at 756# and is now bedridden, and my 4 siblings are also overweight, along with grandparents, aunts & uncles.

My journey to Weight Loss Surgery actually started before I took the steps necessary to have it myself.  I have 2 friends who had the surgery with different results.  I actually attended classes with one friend and learned about the details of the surgery.  But at the time, I was still hopeful that I could somehow lose the weight on my own without surgery.  2 years later, I was back at the same weight and ready to see my doctor about finally having the surgery.   That's the beginning of my story......
