I started looking into WLS back in 2001 when a co-worker had it done. I did alittle research and asked alot of questions. Another co-worker joined Weight Watchers and talked me into joining with her so in March of 2001 I joined WW. I had lost 32 pounds the beginning of June and I felt good, then on June 8, 2001 I was in a car accident that changed my life forever. I was in 3 different hospitals for a total of 17 days. My Dr didn't want me to go home but my insurance wouldn't pay anymore for me to stay. From this accident I had a head injury, balance problems, I couldn't stand or walk on my own, I have had a headache since 2001, 3 ruptured discs in my lower back. I went home on a walker and did PT. I am no longer allowed to drive due to tremors that led to seizures. During this time depression set in and so did a long slow weight gain. I started checking into WLS surgery again then lost my insurance. I tried to diet on my own joined WW again and again. A friend got sick in December 2005 and I helped with her business while she was in the hospital. This is when I realized how much weight I had gained I was above 350 pounds and I am not even 5 1. When my friend started feeling better we joined WW again. It took over 2 years but I was able to lose 50 pounds on my own. Then in July of 2008 another friend said let's look into WLS again. My husband had insurance that covered it and I was so happy. July we went to a seminar and had our appointments in August. My friends decided to pursue the lap band, but I wanted the RNY. I know myself and I know with the lap band I would eat what I shouldn't. Dr Laker is an awesome surgeon and I left his office with a checklist in hand. My friend had her lap band in Nov. of 2008 and I had my RNY December 23, 2008. I feel great, I move better. My only regret is I wasn't able to get this done sooner and start my new life. If you think WLS is for you please do research, ask questions, and explore all your options.
