Presbyterian Hospital

"They kept me in the recovery room for an extra 7 hours because a room was not available for me. My husband spent over 12 hours in the waiting room. My mouth completely dried out in recovery, I wasn't offered any liquids until I complained in pain. The meals offered to me post-surgery were not appropriate to just having had surgery (ensure? really? too soon, too thick). I was not encouraged to walk enough, I felt trapped in the bed from the compression contraptions on my legs. There should have been a chair in the room that would have allowed easy sitting and moving around. I felt pressured and paniced when I couldn't void after having the catheter removed, when in fact, I wasn't receiving enough fluids. In all, a horrible experience and I was supremely happy to drag myself home as soon as possible. "

Donald A. Balder

"Wow, I am so impressed by my experience with Dr. Balder and the staff at Southeast Bariatrics (SEB) in Charlotte. I chose SEB because it is a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Center of Excellence. I chose Dr. Balder because he was new to SEB's practice and I figured I could get scheduled for surgery faster using the new guy. Both were great decisions SEB has a well run, established process to move you through the insurance pre-approval procedures, efficiently (with as few office visits as possible) and quickly. Dr. Balder is very experienced in laproscopic RNY, having 13 years in the bariatric field. He does things a bit differently than Dr. Vollinger (so he says), like doing 5 incisions vs. 7, and not using a morphine pump post-op in the hospital (not sure why), and double staples so that he very rarely has patients with leaks. My pre and post-op experience has been super. I had some issues with the hospital administration (will review that separately), but Dr. Balder and Dr. Vollinger at SEB have been great. I'm now almost 4 weeks post-op and feeling great. I've not had any complications and have been losing weight steadily. I wish I had done this 10 years ago, but am grateful that I have done so now. I'm looking forward to seeing my progress, and am very happy with the results so far. Dr. Balder was very forthright about answering all my questions, both pre-surgery and post-surgery. I had appointments to see him post-op on the day I was scheduled for surgery. Everything has been happening like clockwork. The training/information provided by SEB is very thourough, and the Emmi on-line description of the procedure is very helpful. I would rate both SEB and Dr. Balder and A+. "
