It looks like a few more people have found our board. Unfortunately, we just can't do reviews on products. There are new bariatric products coming out every day - no way we can keep up!
My computer has been giving me grief this week. I'm currently working off of my old laptop - what a dog! Remind me to be grateful for our really speedy desktop as soon as it comes back from the repair shop.
I have made promises to do some posts on dental health, vegetarian options, amongst other topics.
We are happy to do research - give us a topic or a controversial thread & we'll try to shed some light on it!

cutting the controversy

Part of being in any field is keeping up with the research. I have found in my years as a dieititian that some people do, and some people don't. I think we need to question the way we do things. Just because we learned to do it one way in school, doesn't mean evidence won't call our practice into question.
It is rockin' the boat when you tell RDs that the way they "adjust" body weight may not be correct. Who are we to change a person's weight just to suit our formulas - which is what we are doing. We learned to adjust weight to fit in with our estimations of calories, fluids, and medications. Research is proving that this practice is not right. In the last month, a warning was issued to pharmacists and physicians of the dangers of adjusting body weight when dosing antibiotics. It is just the tip of the iceberg in my opinion.
I'm looking forward to progress within my field. I say, stop adjusting weight!

clearing things up

Melania posted on the Nutrition Forum today. The point is to clarify what we can, and what we cannot do. We have ethics, after all - and a professional responsibility to offer valuable and correct information. The consensus amongst us RDs is that it is fun and interesting to moderate this forum. There are a lot of really great people here and I learn as much as I teach!
But cutting to the chase...
I'd bet that most of you don't go to work each day expecting a thank you and that's it. We are Registered Dietitians, that's what we do for a living. We work in a virtual practice and we expect to get paid for the work that we do. There's always work that needs to be done to market a practice - that's what we're doing here. We are sharing a little bit of our knowledge and expertise to a group that need RDs. Ultimately, we expect that some of the members at OH will seek individualized nutrition counseling via eNutritioncare.com. I won't do individualized nutrition care for free - it cheapens what I do for a living and frankly, I don't work for free.
A lot of the questions we answer here wouldn't necessarily come up in a nutrition assessment and counseling. It's more like general information, nutrition facts, and answers about physiology. In fact, a lot of the topics are covered in the intro nutrition class I teach at the junior college here. I'm happy to help, answer questions, offer resources, and clarify misconceptions. I hope people can understand where we're coming from.

October

It's so hard to believe it is already October!
It's getting closer and closer to the holidays and all the craziness that those days bring. It's a particularly hard time when you have had WLS, especially recent surgeries.
Hopefully we can offer some encouragement and ideas to help you manage the holidays and all the eating festivities.
Look out for a few new posts from us.

We are working with the staff at OH to get the nutrition forum ready to launch. We are hoping to create an interactive site to answer questions, share information, and de-bunk some of the myths that are out there. Look out for a message from us asking for your opinions and recommendations for information on the site.
