I had RNY gastric bypass surgery in November 2006. Dr. Keith Gersin performed the surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina. I was living in NC for 8 years when my husband was transferred to Boston, MA office. I now live in Nashua, New Hampshire. I weighed 227 pounds before the surgery. I am 5 feet 0" tall. I lost 80 pounds at the 15 month post op mark. My goal was to lose 100 pounds. This surgery was a "last resort" for me. I kept trying all kinds of diets and would not lose the weight. I had many health issues, many of which have been resolved and no longer require medication or treatment. For example: I had sleep apnea and was using a CPAP machine. I don't need it any more. I was cleared by the local MD stating my sleep apnea is gone. The lost weight has enabled me to walk again. Yes, I know what it's like not to be able to walk up three steps without feeling like I have to pass out. I was able to get rid of 2/3 of my medication. I was not able to find a surgeon who would take me on as a patient in NH or MA because my surgery was performed by a different surgeon. I finally was approved to attend the support group meeting for WLS patients at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. I found the nicest people and I couldn't thank the nutritionist (Linda Tate) enough for this. I am still unable to see the surgeon at their facility. I did, however, get a call from Catholic Medical Center in NH and the dietician there must have been able to get me an appointment with the Physician's Assistant. I would feel so much better knowing there is someone I can call when I have medical questions or issues. I can't wait for this appointment. Support groups are so important. I did not have any support when I moved to NH. If the surgeon did not perform my surgery, I was not "allowed" to participate in their support group meetings. I am having Gastrointestinal issues now. It is so important to have a surgeon whose office I could call. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be accepted by the NH CMC surgical office soon.
