On August 22, I met with the PA at my surgeon's office.  I weighed 164 lbs.  That's 115 lbs gone!  She said losing over 100 lbs. and reaching the overweight BMI category means I am a success as far as the Weight Management Center is concerned.  I would like to lose 10 more pounds and reach the normal BMI.

My vitamin deficiencies continue... my Vitamin D is insufficient (this is supposed to be better than the deficient status that I have had for months) and my Vitamin B12 is low (for the first time).  I started monthly B12 shots August 28.  I'll have the whole battery of blood tests run prior to my one year "surgiversary" visit September 26.

I need to buy some long pants for work cause I don't have any that fit.  We had a cool day and I tried on all the long pants in my closet...none of them would stay up.  I've been wearing capris all summer so I guess it's been awhile since I've worn the long pants.  I did buy a pair of jeans last week - a size 12.  Less than a year ago, I couldn't even get into my size 22/24 jeans.  Yes, it was a very good feeling!

I'll update again after my one year surgiversary visit.

Since I was in Columbia yesterday, I stopped by my surgeon's office and weighed officially - 170.9 lbs.  That's 108 lbs. GONE!  As usual, his scale added nine lbs. to my home scale weight of 162/163.

Am I being unrealistic?  I reset my goal from 175 lbs. to 154 lbs.  At 175, I would still be considered overweight.  At 154, I will be within the normal BMI.  I just don't want to be constantly fighting the scale when my focus has been my health through this process.  I just don't know...  I'll ask my surgeon in August during my 11 month check-up.

and the beat goes on...

I'm in the midst of another stall.  I've been weighing in at 190 lbs. for over a month.  My patience is really being tested.  I will prevail.

It's been five months since surgery and 89 lbs are GONE.  Good riddance.  My weight loss has been GREAT.  My blood work hasn't been so good.  I am still deficient in Vitamin D (since November 07) and now am deficient in Potassium and Protein too.  The Weight Management Center prescribed D and Potassium and I am trying to increase my daily protein intake too.  It would be easier to consume more protein if I had a better appetite but I must eat whether I want to or not.

My carpal tunnel surgery seems to have been a success.  The wound is healing and once it scabs, I will have the other hand done.  I gotta have at least one good hand - a girl has to wipe

A Nice Surprise

Feb 07, 2008

February 07, 2008:  I wasn't looking forward to my visit with the doctor about my carpal tunnel surgery and I was a little surprised when they asked me to step up on the scale.
Well, guess what!?  I weighed 189 lbs.

What a nice surprise!!!!!

Loving Myself to "Health"

Jan 31, 2008

February 1, 2008:  Onederland is wunderful!   Yes, I admit it.  I grew up watching The Lawrence Welk Show and I still like watching repeats on PBS.

In this month of love, I want to love myself to health - by making healthy choices.  As usual, I will continue to be sensitive to what my body is telling me.  It's a new experience for me.  I never really listened before.

I went looking (not shopping) at a department store last night, just to see where I am size-wise.  Full of hope, I marched straight into the misses section and grabbed a pair of size 16 pants.  That's right - regular size 16 not plus size 16W.  The pants fit.    I'm still in size XL or 18/20 tops.

Deb's Weight Loss 2008

January 26, 2008:  Since Christmas, I've been stuck on a plateau.  The scale has stayed within the same five pound range for over three weeks.  I worked really hard not letting it bother me cause I know how I used to handle frustration.

Although I'm not measuring.  I can tell that I have been losing inches even if I haven't been losing pounds. My clothes fit differently or don't fit at all (in a good way).  It's like my body is shrinking in some areas.

Finally on Saturday, I broke the 200 lb mark!!!!
My weight was 196 lbs.  I'm thrilled.  Hopefully, I've started another losing trend.  Just wish I could lose weight as fast as I am losing hair right now.

Deb's WLS Story

September 27, 2007:  Dorothy was right!  There is no place like home.

September 26, 2007:  Going Home - Argh!  A migraine headache.  Lord, will they ever let me go home so I can suffer in peace?  It takes an act of Congress to get my prescription migraine medication approved.  I don't get to leave until after 5:30 pm.

September 25, 2007:  The Day After - Every staff person who has entered my room has told me I have the BEST room in the hospital.  I believe them.  There are wrap around windows on two walls of the private corner room,  A great view of downtown Columbia.  A huge room with two sofas, a recliner, two closets, a sink, a private bathroom.  My brother says it looks like a nice hotel room.  I used the pain pump once every two to four hours as needed.  My brother helped me walk the halls.  I nap and sip on fluids and ignore the soup and jello cause it makes me nauseous.  I didn't know what to expect because I've never had major surgery before but this isn't too bad.  My brother says the hospital recliner is the most comfortable chair he has ever slept in. lol

September 24, 2007:  Day of Surgery - Came through surgery without a hitch.  Remember waking up in recovery having a little trouble breathing but recovered quickly.  Pretty hazy on other details.  My sweet big brother stayed in my room with me.  He slept in the recliner.

August 2007:  My husband had knee surgery and during recovery had to be readmitted to the hospital because he had one blood clot in his leg and two blood clots in his lungs.  My surgery was scheduled September 24, 2007.

June 2007:  I attended another WLS Seminar at Palmetto Baptist Weight Management Center in Columbia, SC.  I selected Benejamin Tribble as my surgeon.  The process is more complicated here.  More hoops to jump through.  It didn't help that front office staff lost or misplaced my bloodwork and other tests results from (and one time inside) my file after confirming they received the results on more than one occasion.  I complained to the acting office manager.

May 2007:  My surgeon's office scheduled my surgery for June 2007.  However, as my pre-surgery appointment for the surgeon approaches, his office calls to say he does not accept my insurance (Tricare) so I have to start all over.

November 2006:  I attended a WLS Seminar at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.  The surgeon I have selected is Michael Melkonian.  I go through the process of meeting with the nutritionist, nurse practioner, and having my records submitted by my primary physician.

Summer 2006: I began mulling over the idea of WLS.  I will have the surgery for me, for my future.
