3 weeks post op

Mar 27, 2009

Yesterday was 3 weeks post op.  Physically i feel pretty darned good.  Have been having more energy.  I find myself singing and dancing in the shower and to tunes on the radio.  Am doing minor chores around the house...it is amazing how far i let things get out of control in the past few years.  I had a cleaning lady come in and do the heavy duty things that i have really neglected, like the bathrooms and the kitchen.  All is sparkling clean, and suprise suprise I am so far keeping it that way.  I am doing little things now without struggling, like cleaning up the kitchen after meals, not letting things pile up on the counters, vaccuming and sweeping, keeping up with laundry and putting it away rather than letting it sit in the baskets.

I re-joined my gym.  THis is my third try LOL.  Since 2000 I have joined twice, even used a trainer, but always stopped going and ended up paying the contract fees for nothing.  They let me rejoin without any new fees!!!!! yay.   I started this week, but am limited to just walking on the treadmill or riding the bikes (gently).  I was all psyched and went two days in a row, now for the past 2 days I missed and am starting to feel tired and decreased energy again.  I think it is because of a few things...i am having problems getting all of my fluids in, maybe only 1/2 this week so far.  I also have been having constant problems with acid in my stomach.  Same as with the GERD prior to surgery, only now it is constant and medicine isnt helping.  I just got off of the phone with my Doc's office and they are calling in a Rx for a new prescription for me to try.   I dont have pain, just constant acid and reflux....ewwww burping and constant bad taste in my mouth.

I am still off of work,  Dr. Eid has me off until my one month follow up visit on 4/6.    I felt like I could have gone back to work this week, but i am going to take the full time that he wants me to take.  I work a very erratic schedule and some long 10-12 hour days, often with few breaks.  I am up and down, dealing with patients all day too.  My employer will not let me go back with any restrictions or light duty, so i would be thrown right back into long work days.  Because of that, since i still get a little tired mid-day, I am going to take my full 4 weeks off.  I am already prepared to take all of my food and supplements to work with me.  I just have to prepare myself for some fatigue.

Other than that, all is good!!  I am so happy to be on the losers bench

One week post op

Mar 12, 2009

wow its been a whirlwind with my approval, scheduling, surgery and all.  Had lap RNY done on 3/5/09.  Everything went well.  Dr Eid, his associates and the hospital staff all told me how well i did.  I got to go home on 3/7/09.  I am feeling better every day.  Yesterday I was advanced to pureed foods and so far am tolerating them well.  Still having problems getting all of my liquids in.

My only issue (and it minor) is the gas pain, which started from post op.  The gas in the belly moving around up to my shoulders and down my back...oh will it ever go away.  It is getting better though but owie owie owie.  Have had a few minor waves of nausea, especially in the morning, but i am working with it.

Overall...I am doing much better than I ever thought!!!!!  Went grocery shopping for the first time today.  It was a strange feeling, not really finding anything appetizing, not craving anything.  WOW, my first wow moment i guess LOL

update....i got approval!!

Feb 19, 2009

i've been meaning to post an update, guess im sorta late lol

On Feb 7 I finished my 6 months pre-op lifestyle classes.  On Feb 13 my surgeon's office submitted everything to my insurance.  Today, Feb 19,  I found out that I was approved.  WOW that went quickly.  Tomorrow I will be speaking with the coordinator at my surgeon's office and we will schedule everything.  They tell me that potentially I could be on the surgery schedule as soon as March 5th.....GULP that is only 2 weeks away.  The next date would be Friday March 13th.  That gives me more time to prepare but OYE its friday the 13th.

First Appointment with surgeon

Nov 28, 2008

Im a week late in posting, but I am still excited and pumped up about having my first official appointment with Dr. Eid.   My first impression of him (back in august at an information seminar) was that he is a skilled surgeon, highly respected in his field, straightforward, pulls no punches and tells it like it is, no sugar coating.  On top of that I got the impression that he truly cares about his patients and their well being.   After meeting him 1 on 1 last week, my impression still stands.  He discussed things openly with me and didn't just rush me thru the office visit.  I work in the medical field and red flags go off with me often when i come up against medical professionals with strong egos and "holier than though" attitudes.  I saw none of that with Dr. Eid.  Although professional in his demeanor, he has a caring human quality about him and dealt with me as a true educated person, not just a number or nameless face in line.  I appreciate that.  My gut tells me that I have made the right decision for me with having Dr. Eid as my surgeon.

Got the orders for all of my pre-op testing.  Its not as bad as I had thought it would be.  Just lots of blood work,  chest xray, ekg,  some gyne stuff (which i just had done anyway so all he needs are the reports) and    an upper endoscopy.   THAT is the one im not looking forward too..not because of the actual procedure but because of trying to get a day off of work and someone to drive me.  Oh happy happy joy joy.  Oh and i will soon be making appointments for the Nut and Psych.

I will be finishing my 6 months pre-op in february and hopefully surgery will soon follow in march.  Looks like things are going along nicely!!!!

and we're off.....officially started 6 month diet/lifestyle pro

Sep 20, 2008

I attended my first "class" this past monday.  and then i got sick the very next day, in bed with the crud for 3 days.  so my diet and excercise program didnt start as planned but ive pulled myself up and am ready to roll.  i did break down and chow on apple pie and my favorite cookies, chocolate gobs.  i dont know why, maybe i needed to get them out of my system once and for all.  oh well,  i feel guilty but am moving on.  I made my own spreadsheet to log my diet and exercise, much easier to write on than the booklet that was given to me at my first class.  I feel scared that i cant do this, but optimistic also.  i am going to try to change my mindset and "git 'er done", once and for all!!

Officially Beginning the Journey

Aug 23, 2008

I am at the point now that I am ready to begin...OFFICIALLY.  I've checked with my employer and insurance company, i've attended multiple informational seminars with multiple Bariatric Surgery Groups, and i've made my first appointment to begin a 6 month pre-surgical lifestyle class.  I have chosen to proceed with the program at UPMC Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.  I am impressed with their entire program from start to finish, and have had several friends go thru the same program.  My first lifestyle class is scheduled for Sept. 15th....I am so anxious I just can't wait!!
