Almost five years and some things have changed.

Just decided today to update my OH page. As I read through all my previous posts, I decided some things needed to be addressed. I will be five years out this July and got a good chuckle at the mind set I had pre-WLS. There were some points that caught my eye when I was reading it.

(June 27th,July 30th, 2004)

Then: My farewell to food nonsense.....

Now: I can still eat all that stuff! Having the surgery did not change my ability to stuff it in my face. Just smaller portions and I have a sugar limit(RNY). I know just what my limit is. Yeah, I tested it and know right where it is. So you don't have to tell yourself never again. That is setting yourself up to fail in my eyes. You can only eat so much chicken breast in your life before the sight of it makes you want to puke! I could ramble on about the change in my food habits for ever but that is for another time.

Then: My New Year's resolution used to be the same crap! Losing weight! Now that I have had wls and will never have to do that crap again!

Now: Well guess what I did on January 1, 2009..........Yeah, I freaking did it again! I got it in my head that I could cruise through this WLS stuff. I exercised sporadically and ate good the same way. For a while it just worked. So I just went with it and wound up at 222lbs. Now when I was reading through my story I found it funny to be so happy to be in the 240lbs range. When you live a couple years around the 210 area you get used to it. Well  the shirts were getting tight around the midsection, store bought size 32's wouldn't fit anymore blah blah blah you get the point. So My New Year's resolution was once again weight loss! I decided to take a much more moderate approach to diet this time. Like I said before, you can only eat so much chicken. More on diet to follow later. Exercise. Now don't run away here! I feel it is the most important part. There are many kinds to choose from and my preference is a mix of weight training and cardio. I want to improve my over all aspect of health. Head to toe top to bottom with lots of help in the midsection. I have started to lift weights about four days a week. I could not believe how weak I was when I first walked into the gym. I was quite nervous I'm 6'3" not a small guy! Before WLS I used to warm up with two 45lbs plates and the 45lbs bar(135lbs). Now after WLS it was all I could do to work out on the cable bench set at 70lbs. GUT check time! Wow it was hard to keep walking in there looking at all those muscle heads putting huge amounts of iron. So for me weights first. After tons of reading, I have decided the best for me is going to be moderate to high intensity interval training. It's short and provides the best bang for the buck. Here is a link that is the best place to get information when your starting out with either of these.

Then: Constantly causing myself guilt over my weight and eating habits. Guilt for me  caused me to turn to one of two coping mechanisms. The first was food the second drink. I think this hold true for many over weight people.(well at least the food part) I am not sure how putting that junk in my mouth magically made me feel better! but it did. Only for a short time though. When it was over the same depressed guy was still looking right back at me in the mirror.

Now: Moderation and persistence is the key.

Moderation: The moderation part holds mostly to the food part. Like I said before you can only eat so much chicken! There was a time in my life when the smell of baked chicken would make me gag! I ate so much that it just turned my stomach. Now this is where the moderation comes in. Before it was just plain, baked chicken that's it. Now I make it in clear soups that we make ourselves. You can control the important stuff when you do it yourself. I even marinate it in ff dressings and BBQ it now. Today for lunch I ate 5oz marinated c/b and one cup l/f cottage cheese and it was great! 270 cals and 52 grams of protein. My wife and I have come up with many healthy alternatives to our old favorite recipes. My all time favorite before WLS was cheese enchiladas. They were yummy but not very good for me. Now it's chicken enchilada soup! Even the kids like it......If you want the recipe just ask and I will send it to you. Be creative and be prepared. It takes work daily to have all your meals planned out. I am sure there is inspirational quote about being prepared that could go here but you have prob heard them all by now.

persistence: persistence is for the exercise portion of my story. Don't stop just keep going. I do something everyday to better myself healthwise. Even things like just making sure I take my vitamins. I have decided to focus on the sport of body building (even though it's more of a lifestyle). Where more in the sport of body building does persistence pay off? They didn't get like that over night. Well if someone knows please fill me in. Body builders use the words persistence and dedication all the time. I like that because for me it's the only way for to stop the cycle of guilt. So with persistence and dedication I will end this vicious cycle once and for all.

Thanks for reading more to follow.
