Starting Over

Jun 01, 2010

February 2005, I had my lap and had great success. Weight loss 124 lbs.  I found myself encouraging and being encouraged.

But the bottom fell out for me on July 4, 2009.  After a week of not being able to maintain any foods or liquids, I found myself in the emergency room, grossly dehydrated and very ill.  Couldn't hardly walk into the emergency room, could get a good blood pressure reading, sitting or laying.

For the first time, I found myself scared and being seen by emergency room doctors who had no ideas what my problem was.

Explaining to the emergency physician that I was a lap band patient, they made contact with my physician and I was instructed to be transported to the hospital.

After getting several scans, it was revealed that my band had slipped and erroded into my abdomen and liver.

The report was the band had to be removed -- OH NO!!  A great fear came over me although my physician tried his best to be encouraging because of my great weight loss success.  But I knew after 4 years, I had not developed the discipline to maintain the weight on my own.  I was discharged July 9, 2009.

For appoximately 2 1/2 months I did OK in maintaining my weight gain to about 10 lbs.  But in November 2009 something terrible happened, I looked at a french fry, I gained 5 lbs.  I ate a salad, I gained 10 lbs.  You know where I going.  By January 2010, I had almost reached my original weight of 246 lbs.  How depressing.  So I took action, I contact my insurance carrier to see if I was eligible for surgery and because I was not a revision in the sense that the band didn't work, I was approved for revised surgery.  I opted for gastric bypass this time and 4 weeks in, I'm 30 lbs down.

I hear many say that those of us who opt for weight loss surgery are taking the easy way out but I want those who have lost weight by natural means to be just as proud of us who have opted for surgery as we are of them.

I'm already seeing improvements in my health.  My joints don't hurt and now I feel like walking the 3 miles twice a day again.
