POSTER CHILD 4 WHY EYE DOCS ROCK!!!!!

Jul 30, 2011

Back in August of 2010 I go to my eye doctor complaining with so much pressure behind my eyes I felt like they were going to bust out of my head. I've been going there for years. I love every single one of them. I told Rhonda, the exam lady, "Rhonda please, I feel so so much pressure. Can u check the pressure behind my eyes and see whats up?" She says "sure DeeAnna, no problem". So she checks it, a long with the cover ur rite eye, read the letters, then left, read the letters and so on. Well my pressure was normal. I was so confused. In comes Dr. Swanson, one of my eye docs. I'm rattling off my symptoms. Pressure in my head and eyes, dizziness, temporary loss of vision in my left peripheral vision and the most annoying whooshing sound in my left ear that I've been hearing for the past 6 months.

Dr. Swanson does the bright light thing and takes some lovely photos of my eyes. He comes back and tells me that there is so much pressure on my optic nerves causing them to swell. He gave me my chart. Had me check out. Told me not to got to work that night, to leave from the office and go straight to the hospital for a MRI. And so I start freaking out. He never said out right but I think they were looking for a tumor. Thank the good Lord above the MRI was fine. The doc from the ER sent me to a neurologist were he diagnosis me with pseudotumor cerebri, broken down it's a massive fluid build up around my brain. And in my case it was causing my to have papledema (swelling of the optic nerves). The neurologist did a spinal tap. Now, a normal opening pressure on a spinal tap is between 16-20. Mine was 58. My neurologist about fell out his chair...lol. Once he did the spinal tap I was ok, for the most part. The pressure was about a 30. That's all I could stand. He tells me I have 2 options. I can either have a shunt placed. That will only help with the draining of the fluid OR i can have gastric bypass. He said losing a lot of weight will somehow help balance out the fluid in my body. And in the long run help with diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure, all which run in my family and I was almost sure to get as I get older.

I had my gastric bypass on Feb 28. As of today I am down 73 lbs. I went to the eye doc yesterday. I saw Dr. Glass (ironic, I know, but that's his name) He was so "stoked" (his word not mine..lol). He looked at my optic nerves and said they are back to NORMAL. I have to tell you, going from them say "DeeAnna if you don't do something you will go completely blind...and soon" to "DeeAnna ur optic nerves are back to normal"....i wanted to cry. And to think it all started with a trip to the eye doctor. Dr. Glass told me I was the poster child for why optometrist rock!!!! I have to say IM LOVIN' LIFE RIGHT NOW!!!!
