Six Months Post-Op

Jun 01, 2008

The past six months have just flown by.  I'm proud to be over 50 lbs down, almost 50% of my excess weight is gone!  When I started this trip, I secretly told myself that if I only lost 50 lbs, I'd consider the surgery a success.  Now that I'm there, I'm not ready to settle, I know I can lose more!

Tonight, my husband, friends and I went on a long bike ride.  We attempted the same ride about one year ago, but I pooped out half-way and headed for home before the others.  This time, I was surprised how quickly we made it to our destination, and I had plenty of energy for the trip back.

I look better, I feel better, I'm so much stronger and healthier.  I love my band!

Post-op Update

Dec 06, 2007

I am not a blogger, so don't expect frequent posts!  I just wanted to leave an update since my surgery on 11/30/07.

Everything went better than I could have hoped.  The pre-op check-in and preparation went quickly, and my surgery was actually 30 minutes sooner than originally planned because they were running ahead of schedule.  This was fine by me, less time for any nerves to sneak in!

The anesthesiologist did a superb job ... one moment I was in the OR feeling a nice warm flush in my cheeks, the next I was waking up in recovery.  Although there was a little abdominal discomfort (ok, it felt like Dr. Evanson used my stomach as a punching bag), the nurse did a great job of getting me enough medicine to feel comfortable but not so much that I was a zombie.

Once I was fully awake and comfortable, I was transferred to my room, and the nurse and her assistant were very nice and helpful.  Just one hour later, I was feeling good enough to walk, and I managed just a short trip to the nurse's station and back.  After that, I was walking several laps every two hours with no difficulty.  They also made sure I used my IS device, and were on the ball with offering ice chips and pain meds.  I enjoyed meeting several other post-op WLS patients during our strolls.

The next morning, 23 hours after surgery, I was discharged home.  The only things I had difficulty with was getting out of bed on my own and picking things up off the floor.  By three days post-op, I could do pretty much anything I wanted, but was easily tired.  There was never any of the dreaded gas or shoulder pain I'd heard about.

Now that I am one week post-op, I'm doing the holiday shopping, running errands, walking the treadmill and feeling great.  I think I'm pushing myself a little, because I still feel tired and a little sore by the end of the day.  Tomorrow I get to eat solid food, if only a few ounces, and can't wait!
