Jumping through the hoops...

Apr 28, 2009

Well, I've been to my surgeon group consult (where I think I helped to convert a RNY to a DS!), had my psych eval and am having all medical records faxed to surgeon so that prior auth letter can be sent to insurance.  Talked to my insurance (Great West/Cigna) and they sounded like approval should not be an issue.  Hoping letter will be sent by next week and expect quick response from insurance.

Here is my issue:  I KNOW the DS is the best option for me, for MANY reasons.  I know people in my area are not familiar with it and just hear WLS and think RNY.  When I've told people my plans, most just tell me how so and so gained their weight back, or puked all the time, or they knew a friend of a friend of a friend who almost died.  That is when I tell them, again, I'm not having THAT surgery, I'm doing something different that should be very successful for me.  During my psych eval I was surprised to have him say "Do you think you're taking the easy way out?"....AAAAGGGHHHHH.  I expect this from others, but not from the psychologist!!!!  He then told me I should attend support group sessions not only for DS, but for other surgeries as well.  What? Maybe to confirm why I DON'T  want to do anything else.  Sometimes I feel when I'm trying to educate pretty much every person I tell my decision to have DS to, I think they all think that...yeah, sounds like she's taking the easy way out.  Pisses me off!!!!

I really just need to keep my big mouth shut.  If I share my decision with others, I guess that gives them the right to give me their stupid, uneducated opinion.  Sometimes I feel like no one understands.  Even my husband, who is very supportive now, played  "devil's advocate" because this is such a huge decision he wanted to make sure I was making the right choice.

The question I have the hardest time answering is this:  If the DS is so great, why don't more people get it?  I say, "because they haven't talked to me!" Can't wait to see what it does for me!!!!
