NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY #1

Aug 18, 2009

I can't believe the day is almost here. The past 3 weeks have gone by so quickly. I am tired of being pre-op liquids, I am sure I won't really care after surgery but today it is hard. It has been a busy day, cleaned up a few things in the yard and watered my baby trees. Then got cleaned up and packed the dogs, took them to Hound Dog Hotel for a mini vacation. Just too much for my mom to be going back and forth from the hospital and dealing with the pups. They will come home when I come home friday or saturday. Then I went to home depot and bought myself a full length mirror and to PetSmart for dog food. Came home, did a couple of loads of laundry and rested the old back. Now, i am just tying up lose ends. We'll see if I sleep much tonite. Usually the night before surgery, I don't sleep much. I figure I'll be sleeping all day tomorrow, so it is okay to not sleep much. I feel very good about my decision to have RNY and think RNY is the right surgery for my circumstances. I am so looking forward to having less pain and more energy. I am so tired of being tired. I HOPE this surgery will allow me to get my life back on track! I want more than just working and recovering from working!

The last 7 years have been so tough beginning with Chris's death. I still miss him terribly, but know he is in a much better place. Chris died the beginning of October 2002, in February 2003 I passed my first kidney stone, March 2003, I fell on the ice walking into work and shattered my ankle and totally messed up my back. I got to the ER and the ortho thought I had been in a car accident. My ankle was dislocated so badly my foot seemed barely attached to my leg. I had emergency surgery that day, with plate and screws placed. Then 6 full weeks in a fiberglass cast then ended up being another 6 weeks in a walking boot. What a mess. Crutches were hell and stairs very scary. While recovering from the ankle surgery, I had my second kidney stone attack. I went in the next week for a IVP and bloodwork. My calcium was borderline high. Ended up with a referral to a urologist and a couple of 24 hour urines so much fun. About the same time my mom, little brother and I had planned a cariibbean cruise to scatter Chris's ashes. We had a good trip, although I was still unable to walk well and spent most of the trip wearing my walking boot.  The cruise line was wonderful about scattering the ashes and we set Chris free off the Cayman Islands, a place Chris loved. The trip was somewhat sad but healing too. I thought it was significant that, at our dinner table on the cruise there was an empty seat. The couple we sat with were about my mom's age and from England, they were very sweet. The night we scattered Chris ashes, we didn't make it to dinner. The next night was our last night on the cruise and when we got to dinner the english couple was wondering why we had not been there the night before. We told them about Chris and they both became very teary eyed and the husband actually had to excuse himself from the table. Just thinking about it makes me teary eyed right now.

To be continued...
