REMEMBERING 9.11 8 YEARS LATER

Sep 11, 2009

I can't believe it has already been 8 years. What a beautiful day it was in NY. I was laying in bed watching the Today show and the local new broke in, saying the a plane hit the one of the towers, they stayed on the shot of the building continuously. At first they thought the plane was a small personal plane. As the coverage continued the 2nd plane hit tower 2. I then knew we were under attack. I tried to call my brother and father who were both in the city that day, but soon the phone lines were jammed. My father had been in Queens so he was fine and walked many miles home along with all the walking wounded. My little brother who I thought was looking for a job in Manhattan, had gone out the night before and was hungover in bed, not realizing what was going on outside the window of my father's condo. Around 5 pm that night I was finally able to get in touch with both my father and brother. It was an eerie day, they had closed all the stores down, the highways going toward the city had been blocked off and only a few cars and many emergency vehicles traveled on them. Night fell that night and sitting on my deck on Long Island, they were fighter jets circling in the otherwise silent sky. My little brother and father soon arrived, because my brother and I would leave the next day on the ferry to connecticut, as it was the only way to leave the island. He and I then drove to Montana to my mom's who just wanted to see us. We were not alone there were many people on that first ferry boat out that morning too afraid to stay too close. I felt guilty many times after leaving so soon but I look back now and things at the time were so uncertain and we just didn't know what might happen in the days to follow.

My family was very lucky, but I knew many family and friends of my friends who were not so lucky on that sad day. The day was extremely scary and so very sad. We honor today all the people who died in the towers and the many firefighters and police who gave their life to save so many people. And the people in the plane who crashed into the field in Shanksville, PA, who were so brave to give their lives and try and put down the terroists. Finally the people and rescue workers at the Pentagon who gave their life that day and do so everyday for us, the American people.

I hope we never forget, but continue to go on with life and live it for all who perished that day...
