5 days post-op

May 25, 2009

I am now 5 days out after getting the Realize band.  I'm actually doing pretty good.  I feel much better than I thought I might.  The surgery itself went really well, I think.  When the surgeon came out to talk to my cousin after my surgery, he said that it took twice as look as was supposed to (1 hour instead of 1/2 an hour).  He didn't say why, and my cousin didn't ask.  So I'll have to wait until my 2-week appointment to find out what that deal was.  I had ALOT of nausea when I woke up from the anesthesia, but not a terrible amount of pain.  I had a really hard time waking up.  There was some talk of making me stay overnight if the nausea didn't go away, but it finally did, and I was able to leave the hospital that evening.  The ride home wasn't too bad at all.  Didn't hurt or anything, I slept most of the time, about 3 hours.  I haven't had to take any pain medication at all.  There was some discomfort at the incision sites, but that is fading everyday.  I haven't had any problem walking or feeling tired.  In fact, the only concern I have is that I have absolutely no appetite.  There is no way I can get in my protein right now, I just don't feel like drinking or eating.  Couldn't eat if I wanted to though, I am on full liquids for three weeks.  Some days I am only getting 50 calories and a couple grams of protein.  I am sipping alot of water.  And even though I love not being hungry, I wish it would always be this way, I'm starting to get worried about not getting enough in.  But maybe my body is just healing right now, and as I get better my appetite will return.  We'll see.  I return to work on Thursday.  That will be an entire week off.  I think I'll do pretty good.  I really do feel pretty good considering.

9 days to go

May 11, 2009

I have 9 days to go until my Realize band surgery.  I'm excited and nervous.  Things went well at my Pre-admission testing last Wednesday.  According to their scale, which is the one I originaly got weighed on when I went for the initial consultation, I've lost 14 pounds.  That's much better than what I thought I had lost using the scale at my doctor's office here at home.  I've picked up some protein powders and ordered a small food processor that's kind of like the cheap version of the Magic Bullet.  I've also picked up my Flintston's chewable vitamins, B-12 sublingual, and chewable calcium.  I have some more things I'll have to pick up by this weekend, because then I'll be having surgery and probably won't be driving for at least a week.  I'm still trying to stay on my diet, but it's so hard, because I just have this urge to eat all my favorite stuff before my surgery.  But I know I can't do that, I need to be dieting and shrinking my liver.  I'm planning liquid meals for my three weeks of full liquid diet after the banding.  I'm almost looking forward to it.  I know I'll be really hungry living on liquids, but I'm so ready to start what feels like will be a new life.  At least new lifestyle.

Just finished lunch

May 04, 2009

I just finished lunch at my desk.  I'm back to being strict on my diet.  I had been doing pretty good.  I lost 12 of the 15 pounds I'm supposed to lose before my surgery.  Then I got bad for a couple weeks.  I weighed myself this morning and I've gained 4 of it back.  So now I'm only down 8 pounds, and I only have 16 days left to lose 7 pounds before surgery day.  I can't believe I let things go so wrong.  I started thinking things like I better eat this or that now because after surgery I won't be able to eat like that again.  I have to be stronger willed.  But I am back to being strict about my diet today.  Doing well so far.  Go down to the hotel in Ann Arbor tomorrow after work so I can be at my pre-operative testing at the hospital bright and early Wednesday morning.   Here's to healthy eating again!

Getting ready...

Apr 28, 2009

I'm having my pre-operative testing done a week from tomorrow.  I'm very excited to get it done.  I hope I pass all the tests with flying colors and am healthy enough for surgery.  I really hope I don't have any trouble with my gallbladder.  I've never had any problems at all with it that I'm aware of, but since I've been on OH I've seen so many people who have had to have their gallbladders removed.  I hope I have a nice, quick easy surgery and that it's not too painful afterward, since I won't be able to take any pain medications.  But I'm sure everybody says that.  It's what we all want.  I haven't had a chance to talk to a nutritionist yet, and I'm also looking forward to that.  I really want to get little details about what my exact diet should be.  I'm hoping I get to talk to one at pre-op testing.
