Back from Henry Ford Hospital

Nov 05, 2009

  November 4 at 10:05pm

My trip went very good except the time mix-up. I had mistakenly told Bill that the first consultation with the Nurse coordinator was at 9:45am but was really at 3:45pm... So we tried to nap in the Escape while parked in the Athletic Center's parking lot. Major oops considering we had to get up at 4am to be there on "time" ..lol Anyway, after the surgery consultation with the Nurse coordinator, Wanda Symanski we had a Nutritional consultation for an 1.5 hrs. So we got out of there at 9:45 pm and then went over to the Henry Ford Apartments and ordered some supper and went to bed.
Then early today we had to get up at 7:30 after a very fitful sleep on the queen bed...definitely not my King bed, and had to walk over to the main hospital to meet my surgeon, Dr Carlin who has done more than 1000 laproscopic surgeries. He was very very nice and informative and looks exactly like his picture...now that's amazing. He also said that I actually have a perfect stomach for the surgery....he says that most people he encounters have skinny legs and a much bigger firmer stomach...and then he said he was quite pleased.
After that I had to meet with Wanda again and get my future appointment days for December and January. Later at 2:45 pm I had to go back to building #1 which is a big gym and had a consultation with a Physical Fitness Expert.......after a couple hours there we finally got to drive home.
Finally step one is complete....and my weight was 9 lbs over my OHIP weight...344 lbs and Dr Carlin also wants mw to lose 15 lbs for my surgery and Wanda said that if you lose more that they will NOT cancel the surgery because they know that we've dieted and been able to lose weight numerous times and keep it off for a very short time. The whole staff at HFH were so kind and curteous that they made all the experiences so enjoyable, not to to mention the hospital was extemely nice looking too.
My next appointments are 2 on Dec 11/09 and then 2 more on Jan 15/10.....and then after that it's my final weigh-in and admissions to surgery.

Hi Guys. Just thought I'd send out a quick update to you before I head out the door to go to work. My husband sent me a text yesterday at work telling me that Wanda from Henry Ford Hospital called the house and wanted me to call her asap. So I did..she seemed quite nice. I'm now booked in for Nov 3 &4 th for the group  consultations and other appointments. So until then.... I guess maybe I'll lose 30-40 lbs ??? I hope this doesn't go against me...

August 23/09 Unofficial Consult date

Aug 23, 2009

Here's the latest update on Kathy's Surgery Chrinicles..... as of last Friday the 14th of August my pre-consult tests are complete.....so after waiting a few days, last Thursday I called HFH and was told by the assistant ot the assistant to the surgeon that my unofficial consultation date is Nov 4th....which of course seems light years away. Probably because my knees are killing me and the thoughts of waiting 2 1/2 months just seems like forever. Wanda is supposed to be calling me soon to confirm everything. My weightloss for dummies book arrived this past week which I started reading the complications after surgery chapter....freaked me out a tad....not so much the complications, but the ER may not be used to dealing with WLS...that's the PART that freaks me out. My ticket for the Dr Monica Ganz event arrived Friday as well....so looks like my brains going to be growing again.. lol

Aug 13 Two outa 3 ain't bad

Aug 13, 2009

Hey,
So..... my husband went to the Doctor's and picked up the test requests and then he called me at work and asked if I wanted him to drop them off. When he came to give them to me I gave them a quick read and found that I could go after work for 2 of them. They were the chest x-ray and the EKG. Tomorrow after work @ 10:30 am I'm going to have my bloodwork done...wow it's been amazingly simple so far !

Called the Doc and HFH

Aug 11, 2009

So yesterday I called my Doctor's office from work today and spoke to the secretary about the next step. She said the next step was to book a consultation with Henry Ford Hosp. So I then called HFH and talked to a person who took down my info and said that someone would call me during the next 2 weeks.
Then today my cell phone rang at work and it was a lady form HFH asking for more info and telling me that this a screening call and then told me she would send an e-mail package to me and  that  all the forms that needed to be filled out and tests such as bloodwork, EKG and chest x-ray needed to be arranged. There was 6 files to down load  and I think it totalled 20 pages. There was info on a book to buy, the group consult, the psych evaluation, the exercise info session and the nutritionalist visit.  It was alot of info.
So I am officially at the stage where I need my Doc to set up my bloodwork, my EKG and the chest x-ray and Wanda from HFH will call me to set up my time for the consults.... WHEW... I guess this is the busy part... !!! Wish me good luck on co-ordinationg all this so I don't have to miss much time at work.

Something suspicious today

Aug 07, 2009

Hello All,

Well today I only worked until 10:30 am as I do every Friday, went to the grocery store and came home and found this suspicious thing hanging from my front door knob....... YEP ....it was one of those pescky hanging card notifications for PUROLATOR !!! I'm of course thinking... what the hell would this mean ? My doctor faxed my OCC form on the 28th of July, that's only 10 days ago. So I'm thinking.this could mean many things 1. Approval (less likely since it is so quick) 2. Request for more info (most likely with this quick reply) 3. OKing surgery in Canada on a long wait list 4. Denied (boo hoo) .
I have to say I did what any smart witted would have done.... I dumped the grocieries on the counter, quickly putting cold and frozen stuff in frodge and freezer and jumped in my escape with both my dogs and drove to PUROLATOR !!. Well, wouldn't you know that my truck with said pacjkage wasn't going to arrive back at the depot until 6:30 pm.....  Soooo I had to drive all the way back home and spent the afternoon sitting in my recliner in inner termoil and stunned.
It came to be 6:15pm and me and my husband drove back into PUROLATOR and I calmly walked into the office received my envelope and went back to vehicle, shut my door and put my seat belt on....and said to my husband " who would think that this little envelope would have such an impact on our lives" anf then opened it.
It was total disbelief, infact I kept reading and scanning through everything to find the 'buts' and 'disclaimers'....as I read that I was "APPROVED".... in 10 days from faxing to my door knob.... UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE !!!!

Just waiting around....

Aug 05, 2009

Hey Everyone,

I'm just waiting around waiting to hear something from OHIP as my OOC form was faxed a week ago yesterday. I'm going to wait until the 31st of August until I make an inquiry if I don't hear anything from them. I'm encouraged by all the recent OHIP approvals and new surgery patients as well.  I seem  to go from very hopeful to doubtful since that's what i always do...doubt. I doubt that anything good can happen to me....especially me. Don't worry I won't be having a pitty party. Not yet anyway... lol
Best wishes to all those having surgery this month.

JULY 23 2009

Jul 23, 2009

Hey,

I just came home from the Doctor's office and asked him to cance the referral to GGH's assessment center and asked him if he coud send me to the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. His response was kind of shocking.... he said that he has sent 5-6 people so far this year and finds their care amazing. He jumped on board totally and then he said that I didn't have to do a thing....and that his office takes care of EVERYTHING !!! OHIP, testing appointments and co-ordinating with HFH. All I have to do he said was call his office  next Thursday to ensure my OOC form was faxed and wait to get a call or the mail for an appointment for some pretesting of some sort. It was at this point I said he sounded like a concierge of sorts....and he said , "that's right, cause we take care of everything "... lol
  I love my Doctor !!!
